How We Get Milk
By Dominic, Jessica, Holly, Lucy, Thomas, Zoe and Marcus
Fact
Milk is very good for your bones and teeth.
Most milk comes from cows, but you can also get it from goats or sheep.
Dairy cows are mainly farmed for milk.
A cow has to have a calf before it can produce milk. Dairy cows
have a calf every year.
Diary or Beef?
• Female calves are called heifers. They will join the
milking herd once they have had a calf.
Male calves will become bulls or go to beef production.
Milking
Cows are usually milked morning and night by dairymen.
Some farms use robot milking machines, when the cows go to milk themselves when they want to.
Milking
Milk TankersThe milk is taken from the farm by a refrigerated tanker to a factory to be
pasteurised and bottled.
Pasteurisation
The milk is pasteurised to kill any bacteria, by heating it to 71 C for 15 seconds.
It is then put into bottlesor cartons and sold in the shops.
I like milk in my tea.
