IM allows people to network into COMMUNITIES
HOW DO COMMUNITIES FORM?
THE VALUE OF COMMUNITIES
Physical proximity leads to basic communities (family, friends, coworkers)
As geography creates physical distance, communities rely on communications like the telephone and email
The internet has facilitated the creation of massive virtual communities where geography is no longer a limitation
Massive virtual communities are by nature diverse and interesting
People are social beings, and long for company and relationships
People desire a sense of belonging to something, having a purpose and a role
Communities are a forum for social beings to interact and to build a social currency

Going cheap, going global
Of course, hardware and software costs are coming down rapidly. "It's less and less the case that people
say I want this but can't afford it," says Symbian's Nigel Clifford.
Telephone vendors in Dhaka
Mobile phones drive digital access in South Asia
It's a global phenomenon, and Asian markets are the main drivers.
Japan is still 18 months or two years ahead of everybody else, says Mr Clifford, but China is catching up
fast. In the second quarter of this year, consumers in China bought 40% more smartphones than those in
the US.
In India, "more people access the internet from their phone than from a PC, a scenario that will certainly
play out right across the globe," says Dr Srikanth.
In Bangladesh, meanwhile, more people are using the popular Opera mini browser for mobile phones
than there are computers in the country, says Jon von Tetzchner, chief executive of Opera.

The pervasiveness of phones are the gateway to the community
Adoption of mobile phones are outpacing computers (laptops and desktops); Most people in the world have a mobile phone but not a computer
The always available mobile phone becomes the only technology that provides you access to your massive virtual community
WHY SHOULD WE EXPLORE BEYOND TYPICAL IM?

PHYSICAL TOGGLE BUTTONHitting a button on the device to change profiles or mute the device
also automatically changes status.
Currently, the iPhone has a physical switch on the side of their device, which goes from sound to vibrate.
Since there are mutliple profiles, a status message can be assigned to each one. The user can then use the shortcut key to cycle between the profiles and statuses.
When in a meeting or busy with work,
toggling to silent/vibrate also sets the
presence to an unavailable mode.
Likewise, when the profile is set to
normal/with sound, the indication will
change to free.
The presence will show unavailable when
there is no range/network coverage.1 2 3

SHARED EXPERIENCEPublic-interest group chats based on event and proximity. (ie: Hockey
game discussion with others at the game.) Public chat rooms based
on proximity is an area which hasnt been tapped into yet, and has the
opportunity to take marketing to the next level.
http://www.justin.tv - JustinTV is a website that streams video (ie: TV shows, Sporting events). The layout of the page has the streamed video placed on the left side and a chat window on the right.
This allows all the people viewing the streamed video to talk to each other as they watch the video together.
Steve goes to GM place to watch the
Vancouver Canucks play the Toronto Maple
Leafs.
As Steve enters the building he is able to join
the Vancouver Canucks Stadium Chat. In the
chat window he can see and communicate
with the other BlackBerry users in the
Stadium.
The event chat has the opportunity to
incorporate interactive elements like real
time stats and updates on scores.1 2 3

CREATE EVENT CHAT
The tagging concept for the contacts is used widely across the internet as an organizational tool (ie: Gmail, Flickr). The event planning feature for this concept is also similar to the event planning app
on Facebook.

Steve is IMing with Ronald and Paul. Ronald
suggests planning a party for the night just
for their close group of friends. Steve
decides to use the event planner to create an
event.
All of Steves contacts are organized into
groups from the friend tags that they have.
He has a special tag for his close circle of
good friends to distiguish from other friends.
Steve creates an event and invites his close
friends.
Once the event is created, a group chat
opens up with all the contacts invited to the
event. This allows attendees to chat with
each other to organize and plan the event or
facilitate any other necessary communica-
tions before or during the event.

FRIEND FINDERMaps integration with messenger allows you to see where you are
relative to other friends. Friend finder can also prompt you whenever
you are in the proximity of other friends. Service is based on a list of
friends that are allowed to view your location.
This concept is a combination of the LBS with the maps application and messenger. This allows the user to have physical presence that can be shared with others. The practicality and potential of
this is enormous and opens up a lot of possiblities. Other scenarios include setting up meetup points, seeing how far your friends are, and finding friends at a crowded/busy location.
Steve is downtown and wonders if any of his
friends are available in the area to meet up
with him.
Steve takes out his mobile device and pulls
up the friend finder. Within seconds, Steve
is given locations of his friends in the local
area.
Meanwhile on James device, he is
prompted with the friend finder, integrated
with the messenger to show that his friend
Steve is in the same area. The two chat...

DESKTOP IM CHATThree people are in an IM group chat together on their desktops.
With an integrated Call function, the desktop communicates with the
device of all parties and initiates a group chat, connecting those in the
group chat.
Currently you can send voice clips over the Blackberry Messenger. On most desktop instant messaging clients, they offer voice notes or voice chat, but you are confined to the desktop. This funciton
would adds mobility, and provides conference call with the touch of a button.
The inital conversation begins on a desktop
computer, where the other parties could be
on their phone or computers.
As the conversation progresses, one of them
decides to chat via voice instead of
messaging.
One person initiates the conference call,
which then signals to the mobile phones of
all the participating people in the IM group
chat.
The conference call is set up, allowing the
whole group to communicate via voice.1 2 3 4

CALENDAR SYNC PRESENCEThe messenger integrates with the calendar events, and changes the
presence accordingly.
We are essentially leveraging multiple sources of existing data to make the . This feature addresses accurately reflecting the status of the user and their tasks. We should integrate multiple sources of

PRESENCE AT A GLANCEPresence at a glance allows you to see who is available or unavail-
able. From there you can decide how to communicate with your
contacts.
With a fluid interface where the messenger is spread out to other programs, the device can be used to view the status of other contact statuses. In this particular scenario, the user is navigating
through his contacts/address book and seeing their status as well. This is different than just browsing through an address book, or browsing through your contact list of a messaging application, since
you are then given options to communicate with them (voice, email, IM).
Glancing at the contact list of the device,
Steve scrolls through to see who is free to
grab a bite to eat. Just by browsing through
the contact list he knows right away who is
available.
Once Steve has found someone thats
available, he then has the option of which
way to communicate.
Steve and Andrew go grab a bite to eat.

ADD A FRIENDInstead of entering contact information when adding a friend, this
feature would simplify the process by transferring data when both
devices tap with one another.
With recent development in Bluetooth 2.1 and NFC (Near-Field Communications), this feature incorporates the physical aspect when adding a contact. Similar to Bluetoothing contacts, the standard
fields of information will be transferred, making a simple process to add new contacts, especially for social and networking functions.
Steve wants to add Jennifer, who he just met
at a social function.
By physically tapping each others device,
their contact information is transferred to
each other.
All of Jennifers contact information is now
on Freds device.1 2 3
