We are very excited to invite you to our annual bull sale. First of all, thank you for taking the time to read thru our sale book. As this time of year is extremely busy, we are thankful for your interest in our program.
What a year. Grass hip high, hay bales galore and moisture. Lots of moisture. The final piece to make a wonderful year was the strength in the cattle markets. It is a great time to be in agriculture… finally!
More than ever, selecting the right herd sire will move your program in the correct direction. Heavy bodied, easy fleshing cattle dominated the sales ring, more importantly, they are the base for profitable, hard working cowherds. Cowherds that forage for a living, raising big, strapping calves that push the scale down.
Without a doubt, this is the most complete set of herd sires we have ever assembled. They are a product of our honest, effi-cient cowherd. We are proud of the fact that the mothers of these bulls grazed out in knee deep snow, bale grazed and went to stock piled grass early in the spring. Our experience is if you pressure the cowherd, only the best will prevail. The implementa-tion of this has been the biggest factor in the improvement of the bull pen.
We are very excited to welcome the Graham family to the sale again. Scott’s cattle are bred, calved and fed here at Moose Creek along side of ours. Rest assured, only the best of both programs are cataloged.
Glenn, Donna, Candace & Darren
A large thank you goes out to the hundreds of cattlemen and women that we have supplied bulls to in our 39 year history. It has been an honour to call so many of you friends and to have your loyal support. Many
have been with us for over 25 years while spanning three different generations of bull buyers.
We are certainly blessed to have supporters like you.

Our bulls are fed a ration of rolled barley, wet distillers, alfalfa hay, straw and millet silage. They are fed at a rate of 0.5 lbs barley/100 lbs. body weight and 2.5% body weight dry matter basis of total ration. We moved from a grain screening pellet (GSP) to rolled barley to help lower the amount of concentrate (grain) that the bulls are receiving. The GSP’s were being fed at over twice the rate of barley and contained over 65% barley or peas. This change has us now feeding at maximum less than 6lbs. barley as compared to over 14lbs GSP. This change will hopefully add to the longevity and soundness of the bulls.
They are housed in a large feedlot pen and have access to a 5 acre paddock. These two things combined with a proper mineral program and complete vaccination protocol ensure that you are getting a healthy, athletic, sound bull.
The mothers of the sale bulls are fed a traditional stock cow ration for approxi-mately 100 days during the winter. The balance of the time they graze stockpiled native grass, bale graze or are on alternative day feeding.
The cows are culled at branding time; about 30% of our cowherd annually. We cull very hard on feet, udders, fleshing ability, production and temperament. Even if a so-so cow has an impressive bull calf at side, she is mated terminal and her calf is castrated, finished and data collected on it.
Yearling bulls have been getting a pretty tough ride lately. Most advertisements that feature older bulls keep say the same things – tougher and more durable than yearlings, fed lightly and wintered on forage, cover more cows, less trouble and more dependable. I find it quite interesting that an older bull can eliminate all of these problems. I am not saying that yearlings bulls don’t have their issues, because they certainly do. What I am saying is that all bulls have the above is-sues. They are not exclusive to young bulls or older bulls but more to bulls from certain programs. Bulls that are wintered in small pens with very limited exercise will do nothing but shrink when they go to the breeding field. Think of it like a couch potato waking up tomorrow and running a marathon. Not going to fair too well, right?
I also get frustrated when I continue to read how yearling bulls are over fed and pushed for huge gains. To me there is no room for this in the industry. How can we as seedstock producers continue to irresponsibly feed our breeding stock? Now not every program is pushing their cattle for huge gains, but the vast ma-jorities are. Muscle is not enhanced with feed; the lack of muscle is masked with feed. With this type of management also come liver abscesses, poor feet and thrifty cattle. The most ironic thing of all is that most older bulls that sell have been on a potent grain ration for over 2 years.

Our main heifer bull. His first daughters are just calving now and what a delight they are. Deep ribbed, aggressive mothers and faultless udders. He passes his calving ease on, as his daughters have all calved unassisted.

I discovered “UB” from across the pasture at Ter-Ron. He was full of muscle, proud and oozing with character. We were very fortunate to purchase a piece of him that
day. UB adds length and style but most importantly, he adds stoutness, rib and an amazing hip. He has all
the tools to be an elite sire. He will continue to be used extensive in our program.

One look at Jumbo’s photo and you know why he is a vital part of our program. After one hotly contested battle, Kevin Brigden purchased Jumbo in our ‘07 sale. He quarterbacks Kevin’s program and after branding and feeding his progeny for 2 years he was leased back. And what an opportunity! If you are serious about the beef industry, don’t look any fur-ther. He is easily the stoutest, deepest bull in the Red Angus breed. I know, I’ve been looking for him for years!

After seeing U63’s dam we knew we needed to add him to our bull battery. Hard muscled, clean cut and very sound, U63 was a welcome addition.
His first sons sell and if they are any indication of his breeding strength, he has a very bright future.
Birth weights seem to be a huge topic for the commercial man. They are concerned about it as so many have moved their calving back to spring and now do it unsupervised. Birth weights are very important but it isn’t the be all. Calving ease and gestation length are equally as important. With winter calving, you can easily add 10% to birth weights over spring calving. The lack of exercise and difference in ration would be the main reasons for the increase. In our program we use Red Angus, Charolais and Simmental bulls. It is our experience that the Red Angus bulls will have more calving ease than the other two. We have used bulls of each breed with birth weights of over 120lbs. in our spring calving herd with no grief. As the cows start to freshen on the lush spring grass, calving becomes easier no matter calf size. The neat part of all is when you actually weigh one of the spring calves they weigh the same as the winter calves but seem to be born easier. Most mature cows should be able to calve at least 8% of their body weight.{
