MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY REPRESENTATIVE, MOSAIC ARCHITECTURE AND THE CITY OF BOZEMAN BUILDING OFFICIALS MET ON DECEMBER 8, 2018 TO DISCUSS THIS PROJECT. MSU STATED THEY ARE WORKING ON FUNDING FOR A FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM, BUT THAT SYSTEM WILL NOT BE INSTALLED BEFORE THIS REMODEL PROJECT. ALL PARTIES RECOGNIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF INSTALLING A SPRINKLER SYSTEM. MSU REQUESTED THIS PROJECT BE ALLOWED TO MOVE AHEAD PRIOR TO SPRINKLER SYTEM INSTALLATION. THE CITY OFFICIALS AGREE THAT SINCE THIS PROJECT DOES NOT CHANGE OCCUPANCY AND DOES NOT IMPACT OVER 50% OF THE FLOOR, IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO UPGRADE MAJOR CODE ELEMENTS SUCH AS SPRINKLERS AND EXIT STAIRS. HOWEVER, THE CITY FELT THEY WOULD REQUIRE VERIFICATION OF OR UPGRADES TO SOME OF BASIC LIFE-SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS. THE CITY INDICATED THEY WOULD REQUIRE:• ALL WORK ON THIS PROJECT TO IMPROVE THE EXISTING CONDITION, THIS WOULD INCLUDE MAINTAINING A SIMILARLY PROTECTED ROOF-CEILING ASSEMBLY• EXISTING DUCTWORK SHAFT SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO DECK AND DUCT PENETRATIONS PROVIDED WITH DAMPERS IN ALL ACCESSIBLE LOCATIONS WITHIN THESE ROOMS.• VERIFY EMERGENCY LIGHTING IS PROVIDE IN THE BUILDING COMMON AREAS ALONG THE ENTIRE EXIT PATH FROM THE SPACES BEING REMODELED. MSU CONFIRMED EMERGENCY

ANOTHER SERIOUS CODE ISSUE IN THE EXISTING BUILDING IS THAT EACH ROOM 401/402 HAS OVER 50 OCCUPANTS AND REQUIRES TWO EXITS. EACH ROOM HAS ONLY ONE EXIT, AND NEITHER ROOM HAS ADEQUATE WIDTH TO PROVIDE 2 EXITS AT THE REQUIRED SEPERATION DISTANCE. THIS PROJECT WILL COMBINE THE ROOMS AND MOVE ONE OF THE EXIT DOORWAYS SO THE COMBINED ROOM HAS THE NUMBER AND SEPERATION REQUIRED FOR THE ROOM OCCUPANT LOAD.
TO MEET THE CITY REQUESTS TO IMPROVE THE LIFE SAFETY OF THIS ROOM, MSU HAS CONFIRMED THAT EMERGENCY LIGHTING AND EXITS LIGHTS ARE IN PLACE (IF IT IS DISCOVERED THERE ARE DEFICIENCIES IN EITHER SYSTEM, MSU WILL UPGRADE THOSE) , AND THIS PROJECT WILL CORRECT ROOM EXIT ARRANGEMENT, DOOR RATING, AND IMPROVE DUCT SHAFT RATING/CONTINUITY.
