February 2017 Mt. Carmel Baptist Church - THE COURIER
A Word from the Pastor
Dear Church Family, The “Journey” continues! Not just the discipleship class on Sunday afternoons, or the parallel sermon series on Sunday mornings, but life itself. We really are on a journey, or better yet, a pilgrimage in this life, (see Hebrews 11:13-16 and I Peter 2:9-12) not just from birth to death, but from birth into eternity. So, how are you and I doing? Are we walking with the Lord, or on our own? Are we headed for home, or are we prodigals? Are we learning and growing as disciples, or are we prideful, or even arrogant-ly self-satisfied? These and other bib-lical questions need to be addressed and honestly answered. The Lord will forgive us where we fail and fall short, if we repent, ask, and receive.
He will also revive and redirect our lives, if we humble ourselves and put Him truly at the center of eve-rything. The Lord calls us to “Come, fol-low me” as disciples, servants, and children. He will lead us if we fol-low, and in the process bless us in every possible way, here on earth, and then perfectly in heaven. Have we heard? Are we responding in faith and obedience? Are we walk-ing in the fullness of His Holy Spir-it? Hopefully, the answers are all “yes”. If not, make it “yes”, for God does not like us to say no to Him. May God Bless Us On Our Way,
Lance
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

THE JOURNEY A ONE-YEAR INTENTIONAL PLAN FOR
DISCIPLESHIP “A church-wide discipleship process”
Making disciples is the most important thing you can do with your life. This year long series was
created to instill biblical understandings, princi-ples, and practices of discipleship with the end goal of making disciples who make disciples.
Each session offers a mix of group discussion, personal study, and practical application. It in-
cludes questions for reflection, prayer guidance, Scripture passages, commentary,
a Bible reading plan, and devotionals.
There are four key attributes of walking the disci-ples path: The disciple’s path is progressive,
relational, disciplined, and replicable.
Join us as we journey together on Sundays 4:30-6:00pm

Speaking of Ministry
actually celebrated all these? I can tell you one thing; we would probably all be a lot heavi-er. By now, you are probably thinking…he left one out. If that is your case, you are exactly right. I intentionally omitted Valen-tine’s Day because it’s the one we most often focus on and I want to give the others their fair share. Valentine’s Day is all about love; and, while human love between a man and a woman is certainly worth embracing, in the space remaining, I choose to celebrate an even better version; God’s love toward mankind. I recently asked a group of teenagers what they thought was mankind’s greatest need; they all said ‘to be loved.’ I used to think it was rec-onciliation to God – probably second on the list – but I agree, it’s to be loved. It’s what moves
the world, energizes the masses and gives fuel and identity to people. The love of God is simp-ly amazing. So, while you are sampling all February has to of-fer, take joy in God’s love. Be-cause God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have ever-lasting life. Let us celebrate God’s love this February, and every month/day throughout the year.
Jeff
Every February, I give you several potentially strange, weird and even amazing days to ‘do some-thing;’ 2017 is not different…in no particular order, let’s take a quick look: (1) Baked Alaska Day, (3) Homemade Soup Day, (5) World Nutella Day, (7) Fettu-cine Alfredo Day, (9) Pizza Day, (10) Cream Cheese Brownie Day, (11) Shut-in Visitation Day, (13) Clean Out Your Computer Day, (14) Cream Filled Choco-late Day, (16) Almond Day, (17) Cabbage Awareness Day, (18) Crab-Stuffed Flounder Day, (20) Cherry Pie Day, (21) Sticky Bun Day, (23) National Chili Day, (25) Clam Chowder Day, (27) Strawberry Day and (28) National Rare Disease Day. I guess there was a particular order after all. Can you imagine what a month it would be if we/I

It’s hard to believe that the first month of the year is al-ready gone! It would be inter-esting to know how many of our goals and resolutions for 2017 have already gone by the wayside. One thing I do know is that time is passing quickly, and we should be making changes that will last through-out eternity. Our culture is changing, and with the change, comes fear. As Christians in today’s world, we see people outward-ly making fun of, or condemn-ing, Christianity. But, since the beginning of Christianity, people have been persecuted because of their faith in Christ. Lance and I have the privi-lege of talking to many peo-ple, and the one thing people want in their life is change. If
they are not believers in Christ, then they want to hear about the change that only Christ can bring. If they are Christian, they want to know how they can better follow Him, so that change in their life is evident and real. I know one thing that needs to change is our reluctance to share our faith with the lost world. I really believe people are more curious and willing to hear about Christianity than ever before. I pray for all of us to be more bold in telling what Christ has done for us. God can help us overcome our fear, and only He can bring about real change. On February 17th and 18th, our LifeGroup leaders will have the opportunity to come together to learn from Chuck Lawless, a gifted author,
conference leader, and for-mer pastor. Our goal is to become more passionate about Christ and His mission. LifeGroups are important to our church, and we need to learn and do all we can to make our classes more effec-tive and fruitful. Chuck Lawless will also be preaching for us on the 19th, and we pray you will be in worship at Mt. Carmel on that day. Also, invite your family and friends to join us. We are praying for a real awakening in our hearts and minds, and also in our church and community.
