RONA N & ERWA N BOUROULLEC
“UNCINO is almost PRIMITIVE. It’s a wooden chair collection composed by two or three pieces of PERFECTnumerically SCULPTED WOOD, held in place by simple metal rods”.
With the UNCINO collection we continue our collaboration with Mattiazzi and the idea of sculpting wood both handcrafted and with numerically controlled milling machines. We conceived a family of wooden task chairs with two different backrests, a (four star) swivel base and a (three legged) sledge base. The gently carved wooden pieces are held in place by bent metal rods – while wood remains the main actor, the metal parts play a fundamental role in the construction. The metal structure joins the pieces of wood in an almost organic overlap. The wood embraces the metal rods whose form subtlety appears on the wooden surface like a prominence.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec have been working together for over ten years, bonded by diligence and challenged by their distinct personalities. In 1997, they were spotted by Cappellini, giving them their first industrial design projects. Since then, they have gone on to work with Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Established & Sons, Axor Hansgrohe, Flos, Kvadrat, Kartell, Cappellini, Ligne Roset, Nani Marquina, Mattiazzi, Mutina and Hay. From designing spaces to furniture, taking on architectural projects to designing textile wall systems or comprehensive collections, the designer brothers maintain experimental activity with Gallery kreo, which is also essential to the development of their work. Several exhibitions have been devoted to Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec including the Design Museum, London and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. In 2012, two exhibitions have been showing their work: Album at the Vitra Design Museum and Bivouac, a mono-graphic exhibition that has been shown initially at the Centre Pompidou Metz and then at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. In the spring 2013, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs unveiled Momentané, a major exhibition. In 2012, Phaidon Press published a second monographic book, Works; in 2013, JRP Ringier published Drawing, a book with more than 850 reproduced drawings.
