We Are Value Created Explained
Dr. Morris Massey defined the generations as, What you are is where you were when
We are defined by our values, and a values is based on Culture, Age, Gender Roles, and Ethnicity.
From the age of 1 6 our values are being imprinting on us From the age of 7 12 we select are values from modeling.
At the age of 10, 90% of our value system is set From age of 13 20+ we select are values from socialization.
At age 20 are 100% values are locked in for life The only thing that can alter our values is a S.E.E. or a Significant
Emotional Event, whether it be personal or global There are 9 major impactors that affect our value system: 1) family,
2) friends, 3) religion, 4) technology, 5) school, 6) media-advertising, 7) music, 8) income, & 9) geography

The Differences: View of the World
3/22/2013 Michelle Post, Ph.D.
What is the solution?
3/22/2013 Michelle Post, Ph.D.
Strategies for Motivating
Chunk the data Whole-part-whole concept Make the material relevant Explain the reason for
specific assignments & align to learning
Let the students work in groups
Give some degree of options & flexibility in assignments
Create a climate of exploration
Make sure leaner is equipped with right knowledge & tools to complete assignments
DO NOT Assume learners are technically proficient
Show, Do, Show Again Bend the rules some Set intentions not
expectations
3/22/2013 Michelle Post, Ph.D.
Learners Succeed When Instructors . . .
Create a relaxed and safe atmosphere.
Accommodate different learning styles.
Present information using both visual and auditory methods.
Talk with students, not at them.
Recognize student uniqueness. Validate cultural differences. Let students influence course
coverage
Match teaching method to content.
Build on students' experience. Encourage self-motivated
learning. Include team learning projects. Avoid setting up competition. Support theory with real-life
examples. Make class sessions
interactive. Provide frequent positive
feedback

http://www.adultstudent.com/eds/articles/teaching.html
Treat Learners Like Adults
Adults are people . . . With years of experience A wealth of information Established values, beliefs
& opinions Personal style has
changed Learning style has
changed Have pride
Relate new knowledge against personal experiences
Need breaks Deep need to be self-
directing Whose individual
differences among people increase with age
Have a problem-centered orientation to learning

Believe, Become, & Belong
Belong
Become
Believe We want to BELIEVE in someone or something We want to BECOME or grow with a group We want to BELONG to a group with others
A Multi-Generational Classroom or workplace can be one of similarities filled with experiences, strengths, and energy. It does not have to be one of differences and conflict.
