What does division mean?
Example: 12 ÷ 3 (If I divide 12 among 3 groups, how many will be in each group?)
Let's use 12 apples and divide evenly them into 3 groups.

Estimation of Quotients:
‐ Use the "Think Multiplication" strategy.(Round 36.317 to the nearest whole number that is a multiple of the divisor)
‐ Example 1: 36.317 ÷ 2
Think ‐ what number is a multiple of 2 that is close to 36.317?Round 36.317 to 36 because 2 x 18 = 36Therefore we know that 36 ÷ 2 = 18
‐ Example 2: 13.23 ÷ 4Think - what number is a multiple of 4 that is close to 13.23?Round 13.23 to

‐ Example 3: 15.2 ÷ 6
Think ‐ what number is a multiple of 6 that is close to 15.2?Round 15.2 toTherefore we know that
‐ Example 4: 20.23 ÷ 7Think - what number is a multiple of 7 that is close to 20.23?Round 20.23 to
