Name ________________Unit 6/P6 – Concrete Construction

• Expensive• Heavy and dense =

strong, sound proof and thermally efficient.

• Cast in situ or pre-cast

• High skill level• Taller structures

possible.

• Piled foundations or pad in poor subsoil conditions

• Formwork is key element of shape

• Any shape can be formed

• Rebar• Must not touch air

• Concrete poured between formwork and after rebar

• Pump trucks and tower cranes used to supply concrete

• Slump test• Strength of concrete

can vary, measure in PSI

• Formwork is moved up a floor at a time.

• Used to be timber now metal.

• Concrete can be poured to a pre marked level, normally the top of the formwork or a set thickness.

Name ________________Unit 6/P6 – Concrete Construction

• Concrete needs to be vibrated into place

• More water allows concrete to flow into more complex shapes but will take longer to dry.

• 5 days or more to cure.

• Weather can affect drying time

• Not below 4 degrees unless using accelerant

• Building normally clad in brick, timber or metal

• Normally flat roofed

• Wall openings need to be part of formwork, nit cut after.

• Internal walls are partition

• Need deflection header due to flex of floor

• Service duct / tunnel between floors

• Dry riser required above 18m – fire service limitations
