FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK:
Dear Lodge Sisters & Brothers,
Autumn is on its way, don’t we all look forward to the beautiful
colors of the leaves. September was a great month for our Lodge.
We welcomed a new member, Jackie Fischer, book author. Jackie
gave a very interesting Culture Presentation about her family and
the writing of her book.
The St. Liberata Festival was a huge success, we sold aprons,
auctioned off a raffle basket, from Rao’s New York Restaurant,
handed out numerous membership applications, hopefully we will
get some new members from all our efforts.
Join us for our Meeting, October 2nd, 7 pm. DISTRICT DEPUTY,
Keith Wilson, good friend from the Columbus Lodge will be our
Honored Guest.
This year more than ever we need Membership support for the
Columbus Day Parade because of the movement to discredit
Columbus and the importance of his legacy to Italian Americans.
Please attend the parade and the festival which follows.
Please help with the ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH SHOWCASES

Giovanni Battista Beccaria - an Italian Physcist- October 3, 1716 – May 27, 1781, born in Mondovi.
Mondovì is a town and commune in Piedmont, northern Italy. The area around it is known as the Monregalese. He
entered the religious Order of the Pious Schools or Piarists, in 1732, where he studied and afterward taught
grammar and rhetoric. At the same time he applied himself with success to mathematics. He became a
professor of experimental physics, first at Palermo and then at Rome, and was appointed to a similar
position at Turin in 1748.
His most important work being: Dell'elettricismo artificiale, e naturale : libri due,
Of artificial and natural electrology: two books.
The Golden Rod a guide to wealth,
Thy thoughts are fancy free
The iridescent OPAL bids Hope
May the world be kind to thee,
And that thy star may guide you
Through life’s path, where ‘ere you should be.
Vincent M. Spano (born October 18, 1962) is an American film, stage and
television actor; he is also a film director and producer. Spano was born in
Brooklyn to Italian American Parents Vincent & Theresa. His career stared
when he was 14 years old in the Broadway drama, THE SHADOW BOX. He
was originally credited as Vincent Stewart because his first agent felt the
name Spano was “too ethnic”, and he was even instructed to sign
autographs using the stage name. At age 16, in respect for his Italian
heritage Spano began using his real name and has done so since then.
Proud of his heritage and handsome too!!!!!

3.ANGELO SECCHI Fr. Pietro Angelo Secchi SJ was an Italian astronomer. He was Director of the
Observatory at the Pontifical Gregorian University for 28 years. He was a pioneer in astronomical
spectroscopy, and was one of the first scientists to state authoritatively that the Sun is a star.
4.MACEDONIO MELLONI Macedonio Melloni was an Italian physicist, notable for demonstrating that
radiant heat has similar physical properties to those of light. Born at Parma, in 1824 he was
appointed professor at the local University but was compelled to escape to France after taking part
in the revolution of 1831. In 1839 he went to Naples and was soon appointed director of the
Vesuvius Observatory, a post that he held until 1848. In 1845, he was elected a foreign member of
the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Cristoforo Columbo was born in Genoa, Italy, where at age 24 he took his first step towards accomplishing his destiny when he joined the
Genoese Fleet. He learned his navigational skills from his brother, Bartholomew, a map maker in Portugal. During his enlistment in the
Portuguese Navy, he realized he could achieve his goals of developing a western route to the Indies, by sailing west with the Trade Winds
and returning with the Westerlies. No other man of his time had thought of that.
When King John of Portugal would not sponsor a voyage to the Indies, Clumbus appealed to Quen Isabella of Spain. Althougth she was
impressed by his navigational knowledge and deep faith, for six years she could only offer him hope. When she agreed to sponsor him the
terms for the expeditions were wet in an agreement between the crown and Columbus. In the spring of 1492, the Nina, Pinta and Santa
Maria were outfitted for the voyage in the southern port of Palos.
On August 3, 1492 Columbus’ ships set sail from Palos on one of the greatest voyages in the history of the world. Their first port of call
was the Canary Islands, where the Trade Winds begin. The voyage was filled with hope and expectation but after weeks, only h is
navigational skills and faith in God-given destiny helped Columbus overcome discouragement, fear, despair and mutiny.
Landfall was made on October 12, 1492, on an island in the Bahamas, which he later called San Salvador (Holy Savior).
A deeply reliqious and moral man, Columbus commemorated his first landing with a white cross. His religious conviction was shown in the
names hegave to places in the New World. The expedition sailed on to discover Cuba and then sailed east to Hispaniola where the Santa
Maria was destroyed. Fort Navidad was constructed from its timbers. When Columbus returned to Spain on the Nina, he was confrerred
the title of Admiral by the King and Queen.
Funded by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus set sail on his second voyage on September 25, 1493, from Cadiz. He
established he first European colony in Americas on Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic) He explored southern Cuba and
discovered Jamaica.
After each of his voyages, he returned to Spain with evidence to substantiate his discoveries.
On May 30, 1498, he departed from Spain with six ships , on his third voyage, landing on Trinidad (Holy Trinity) on July 31, 1498. The
next day he reached the mainland, thus becoming the discoverer of South America.
Columbus’ fourth expedition left Spain in May 1502 and landed in Martinique. He then sailed to Santo Domingo and discovered Honduras
and Panama.
Christopher Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain on May 20, 1506.
Columbus greatness lies in the fact that through his “discovery,” the New World became part of the European World. Although Columbus
was searching for a westward route to Asia by sea, the discoveries he made were far more important and valuable to the world.
