KATIE PASQUINI MASOPUST
TUESDAY, MAY 15, 2018
For nearly 30 years Katie Pasquini Masopust has produced high quality contempo-
rary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers.
From her early beginnings as a painter dabbling in traditional quilt making, her
work has evolved from structured Mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces
to very painterly landscapes and abstracts executed with the finest fabrics and

Hi All,
I just returned from my quilting retreat up at Zephyr Point
Presbyterian Conference Center (ZPPCC) at South Lake Ta-
hoe. Twenty-two lovely ladies joined me (many from the
guild). We all had a great time and what beautiful quilts were
made. I love to go to retreats because you get so inspired. I
truly believe that creative juices help us mentally. It’s such a
great outlet for so many issues. The 1994 earthquake in L.A.
was a great example. I had to move out of my place because
it was knocked off its foundation. A friend of mine had an
empty house in Diamond Bar that she let me use. It was a
long way from home and I didn’t know anyone so I started
working on a Double Wedding Ring queen size quilt. All the
pieces were from all the dresses that my mom made us three
girls. She had saved all the scraps with the hope that she
would turn them into a Double Wedding Ring quilt. She was
never able to do it and gave me all the scraps. I used this
time to make the quilt as well as three Double Wedding Ring
wall hangings. One for my two sisters and me. I don’t think it
would have gotten done without the catastrophe of this earth-
quake. I know many ladies who have made beautiful quilts
during their grieving period of losing a loved one. I think quilt-
ing is a great healing tool. But as this week proved, one can
make beautiful quilts at any time. Hope you all have a great
month!
Many hugs,
Paulette Trafecanty

Greetings from Community Service
At our last Community Service meeting Janet Van Wert
shared a letter with us from a mother whose child received
one of our quilts in the hospital. It was a very lovely letter
saying how much she and her child appreciated the quilt.
Thought you would like to know that your work is appreciat-
ed. We do get thank you notes from time to time.
I spoke to a mother in the church coffee shop the other day.
When I told her I was with RCQG she also related a nice sto-
ry about the quilt her child got at Mercy San Juan ICU.
Last year we delivered 342 quilts to children in hospitals and
would like to up our goal this year to 400. So, with this in

most creative stitching techniques. Katie’s easy, energetic
manner has made her a very popular teacher and lecturer.
When not in residence at her studio in North California she
travels the world presenting her contemporary quilting theo-
ries and techniques to classes; not only in North America,
but in Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand.
Awards and accolades have been numerous for Katie, cul-
minating with her 2005 induc-

earned the Silver Star Award

WORKSHOP - From Watercolor to Quilt May 16 and 17, 2018, (Wed. and Thurs.)
Abstract watercolor paintings will be created the first day using 10 different painting techniques. One painting will be chosen and cropped to find the most dynamic part. This will be drawn to make templates, then enlarged, and translated with fabrics ,which in turn, will create a quilt.
Supply List: http://www.katiepm.com/teaching/workshops/#watercolortoquilt Cost: $80. (Two day) Location: Carmichael Presbyterian Church, 5645 Marconi Carmichael, CA 95608

mind, please help us to reach this goal.
If you have unfinished Community Service quilts that have
just been sitting in your house and you are not going to finish
them for whatever reason, please bring them to the guild
meeting or a Community Service Meeting. You can turn them
in, no questions asked, no guilt. Somebody else will be willing
to finish them. This will help us toward our goal of 400 quilts
delivered this year.

Door Prize Donations I want to thank those members who have donated items for door prizes. Your generosity is very much appreciated! The door prize budget is very small this year - $150. In order to have 4-5 fun and interesting items for door prizes every month I am asking members to donate a new (e.g., bought and never used, on sale or clearance) or slightly used quilt-ing notion, fabric (e.g., charm packs, fat quarters, mini charm packs that you don't like and will never use), or a handmade item. I don't expect all the Guild members to do-nate something every month. If just 1 or 2 members donated something every month it would make our door prize selec-tion a lot more fun and really help with the budget. As I have previously stated, please know that I don't want this request to negatively impact Guild member donations to the Quilt Show Boutique because the Boutique is an im-portant revenue generator for the Guild. Please contact me, Diana Muenzler, via email ([email protected]) or C: 916-873-5526 if you have any questions.

JAN SOULES: TREES WITH YELLOW SKY
Jan Soules’ quilt, “Trees with Yellow Sky”, is part of the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates ) exhibit called “Art Quilts” currently on display at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock. The exhibit runs through May 27

CELEBRATING…
Mighty Mighty…Janet Van Wert turned 90! A very young looking 90, I might add.
Moving…packing…moved!! Marion Emerson moved into a new home in Fair Oaks and loves her new neighborhood!
Kathy McGovern was offered early retirement and beginning in Septem-ber she will have more time for quilting!
Chrissie Reiswig has a new love in her life…a 10 week old Golden Retriever named Phoebe. Phoebe is a little bit girly with a lot of spunk! Puppies are the best…just saying… (Kittens are the best...just saying - the editor)
Jan reports that Gayle Turner’s husband, John, help negotiate a “new-to-me” plum colored RAV 4 after her car died during a Granny Smith retreat at Dillon Beach. A retreat at the beach and a new car…sounds like win-win to me.
Tacy Zschokke will become a grandma for the first time in October 2018. Congrats on the upcoming event. ON THE ROAD AGAIN…
Heidi Steger missed the February and March meetings because she was in Idaho and New York State re-spectively. She will also be gone in May and reports that she misses everyone and hopes to see us in June.
Tracey List and her husband Jonathan spent Tracey ’s March birthday in England. They had great adventures in London, Devon, and Cornwall, which included a blizzard in Dartmoor, many cream teas and a fabric and notions buying spree at Liberty of London.
Kellie Willey and Mary Fish were roomies at Asilomar. They enjoyed a great week taking Sue Rasmussen ’s free motion quilting class. Mary created beautiful feathers and Kellie reduced everything down to tiny tiny stitches. Well worth the time and money spent!
MISCELLANEOUS
“A shout out to Fran Watson for the super job quilting my Jack Skellington quilt in record time as well as beautiful spider webs. Also Teresa Lanbing, Fran Watson, and Peggy Graptin took a terrific collage class. Can’t wait to see the results.” (I’m not sure who submitted this but she has a Jack Skellington quilt, which is cool).
Cindy Parsell has a timeshare reserved for Sisters Quilt Show in July. She has three spots that are available. If you are interested, please contact Cindy for details. Her cell number is 916-710-5722 or email her at [email protected].
Join Sandra Mollon and Cynthia Langhof of Custom Designed Travel on a tour to the European Patchwork Show, Lyon and Paris, September 11-22, 2019. Email Sandra at [email protected] for more information.
Our Opportunity Quilt was displayed at the three local quilt stores during the April Quilt Rush. All three shops (Fabric Garden, Quilter's Corner, and Thistle Dew) allowed us to sell raffle tickets. When visiting these shops PLEASE men-tion that you are a guild member and appreciate them allowing us to do this. We actually made more at the Quilt Rush than we did at the Sewing Expo in March!

Debra Cribbins’ oldest grandson, Hunter Witham, competed in the 1st Robotics competition for the El Camino
High School team. They were thrilled to place first for the newly formed “seed” teams. Hunter spent many hours with the Davis High School Robotics team, who mentored and assisted the El Camino students. Davis HS demon-strated true comradery and leadership as they have one of the top Robotics teams in the nation.
AND NOW FOR THE ZEPHYR POINT VERSION OF OVER THE BACK FENCE… Many of us (including our illustrious president, Paulette Trafecanty, who organized the retreat) spent the week of April 15
th at Zephyr Point quilting, watching the snow fall, stuffing our faces and in general having a terrific time. Here are
some notes from Zephyr…
Diana Muenzler started three new projects (because she doesn ’t have any UFO’s and is glad you can’t see her nose growing). Diana socialized a lot with quilting friends and ate way too much (trust me, we all did). She also enjoyed visiting with Mary Fish and Mary’s husband, Don.
Speaking of Mary Fish, her husband, Don, came along with her for some rest and relaxation after his surgery in March. Mary worked on a large England Design paper piecing project, an UFO, which might be finally finished by November. While Mary went blind paper piecing many tiny pieces, Don watched movies and NY Mets games.
Gail Palmer was also in attendance. She enjoyed the fellowship of all the other retreat -goers, she finished several UFO’s, and thoroughly appreciated her lake-side room (many thanks, Paulette). It was a delightful treat to open the blinds on Monday morning and take in the splendid view of fresh snow!
If you see Mary Jane Motter, give her a hug!!
Karen Coker, who attended the quilt retreat with her mom, Carolyn Campbell, reports that Zephyr Point was a much needed vacation. Karen’s life has been very exciting. On January 25
th, she was blessed with her first
granddaughter, Sierra. On March 12th her Labrador Re-
triever delivered eight puppies (what’s better than one puppy? Eight puppies!!). And on April 5
th, her second
granddaughter, Paisley, was born! Life is busy but this retreat was great.
Speaking of Karen and Carolyn…the mother and daughter who quilt together stay together…the quilt on the left is Carolyn’s and Karen’s is on the right.
That’s all for this month! Submitted by Kathy Mitchell [email protected]

SEPTEMBER: JUDY COATES PEREZ
Artist, explorer, image wrangler, knowledge seeker, creative
alchemist, and purveyor of inspiration, helping others chan-
nel creativity on a daily basis. I’m an International award-
winning mixed-media textile artist and author, who travels
globally to teach painting and mixed-media techniques and
lecture about my creative process and sources of inspiration.
I received my BFA in graphic design from The Otis Art Insti-
tute of Parsons School of Design, but found my true passion
when I began working with textiles. One part gypsy and two
parts visual alchemist, I travel to new places, opening up
new realms of possibilities for my students by revealing end-
less ways to combine paint, paper and metal with fabric and
the sources of inspiration we all too often overlook in our im-
mediate worlds.
Workshop: Sept. 19th and 20th, Paint and Print a Pa-
looza, class fee $70.Workshop to be held at Meiss-
ner's, Sacramento Times are 10:00a.m. till 4:00p.m.

OCTOBER: DENISE OYAMA MILLER
Denise Oyama Miller was born in Baltimore, Maryland, then
lived in Bethesda and Rockville. She moved to Altadena,
California in 1960 and Saratoga, California in 1963. She now
lives in Fremont, California with her husband. They have two
married sons and three grandchildren. Denise spent 30
years working for Kaiser Permanente in the Information
Technology area before retiring to work on her art full-time in
2000. She completed her formal education at the University
of California at Berkeley with a degree in mathematics. Her
work has won many awards and has been included in many
public and private collections. Her work can be seen at Val-
ley Art Gallery in Walnut Creek, California. She is a member
of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), an international
group that supports the art quilt through exhibitions, publica-
tions, and education. She is also a member of the Olive
Hyde Art Guild and Pleasanton Art League.
Artist’s Statement
Denise Oyama Miller, working on a project “I have always
found joy in making things with my hands and I am constant-
ly inspired by just the existence of materials to work with and
what I see around me. I am interested in the patterns of
shapes, colors, textures, and the interplay of lights and
darks. I love the challenge of taking an idea from one of my
inspirations and interpreting it in fabric and/or water media.
As I travel, I always keep journals for recording what I see
and ideas for future artwork in fabric and paint. The chal-
lenge of taking an idea from inspiration to artwork is thrilling.”
Workshop: Oct. 17th, Broken Glass, class fee $35

JUNE: MERI HENRIQUIES VAHL
I was born in New York in 1945, into a family of many gen-
erations of prolific artists, and from my earliest childhood art
has been as important to me as breathing. In 1967, I earned
a BA in Fine Art from UC Berkeley – it was certainly an in-
teresting time to be there – and then went on to work as a
graphic artist in San Francisco before moving to Santa Cruz
in 1970. I began sewing clothing in college, but didn’t come
to quilting until much later as I was convinced that cutting up
all that fabric into little pieces, then sewing them back to-
gether again was too much work! However, in 1998, I dis-
covered that the quilting world had branched out in exciting
new directions, especially art quilts – at which point my
“painting genes” kicked into overdrive and I’ve never looked
back.
Workshop: June 20th, Making People, class fee $35.
Workshop is at Meissner's, Sacramento. Times are
10:00a.m. till 4:00p.m.

NOVEMBER: HEIDI EMMETT AND
CHRISTINE BARNS
My name is Heidi and I live in Grass Valley, in northern Cali-
fornia, near Lake Tahoe. People have asked about my past
experiences in fabric arts and design. It all started when, at
my mother’s sewing table, I’d design and make outfits for my
Barbie doll. Heidi and Christine will be presenting a lecture
and trunk show of Kaffe Fassett’s work.
Workshop: There is no workshop at this time due to
our annual quilt show.
