Let’s see how long Adam stays on the front porch playing bike and tractor mechanic. Tommy and Peyton are at the beauty shop and judging by the 2-day stubble on his face, I bet it’s daddy who’s getting the beauty.

I spoke too soon. There’s a workbook on my desk

and as he points to the letters Adam says “D-O-G, dog!”

Above that book is a banker’s lamp. Mom is no banker but she does like that lamp. So does her son. It has a chain and with a mischievous smile, he yanks it. I pretend to ignore him.

Yank on. Yank off. Yank on. Yank off. Then the chain gets tangled inside the assembly and as Adam’s dirty fingers reach in to unwind it, he burns himself. “Hot and dangerous!” he tells me. Truth.

There’s nothing about a Pilates ball/desk chair that implies that two people can sit on it at the same time. But as I type this paragraph, the young man has his knees up against the small of my back and his arms clutching my sensitive, unprotected voice box.

The phone is ringing and someone named Greg in the 434 area code wants to chat. He’ll have to talk to the gentle-man in the recording. Hope he can send us an email. I’ve gotten pretty good at

typing replies with one hand.I could have just handed the phone

over to Adam, who would have told this fine man that mommy’s green lamp gets very hot, or that taking off the pedals of your bike is easy but screwing them back on is hard.

If Peyton were around, she could have chatted about her baby doll and how her socks never stay on. He’d be able to hear her sniffles, which her brother gave her. Or was it the other way around?

Here comes Adam again, this time with his dingy pillow, the same one he took outside with him for this month’s classy family portrait. As parents, our pillows will be very much appreciated tonight!

Enjoy!Yvette & Tommy Stafford

Friend BASIC NECESSITIES

Stand by your wine“Love is not love which alters

when it alteration finds, or bends with the remover to remove.” Since quite a few people wrote exclaiming over quotations in past columns (alas not my words but famous others’) I thought, why not continue? The above, written by that playwright and poet fellow, most people will rec-ognize. Those who read Shakespeare will know it as sonnet CXVI which begins, “Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.” Those who love movies will remem-ber in the Hollywood adaptation of Sense and Sensibility the talented Kate Winslet murmuring the lines as she gazes across the moors to Wil-lougby’s estate.

I have long admired that particular sonnet and while to compare it to wine might prove an imperfect analogy and a wee stretch, I think there’s a case. Just as I have always admired those couples who work out differences, gaining a deeper love and apprecia-tion for one another, so too do I admire those winemakers whose wines reflect the varying weather patterns and off

vintages. There are certain wines I love even when they fail to live up to some previous and unforgettable incarnation which first spoke to my heart. This is why I’m bothered when a person dis-misses a wine simply because it tastes different from a prior vintage.

To borrow from a great wine maker, Serge Hochar of Château Musar: “You will learn not to condemn any wine until you have stayed with it through all its stages. When you understand that, then you can learn not to condemn any person until you have watched him through many stages, too. You can learn to tolerate life through all its stages, never to make a complete judgment.”

Therefore, unless we want to see the wine world populated with monocul-ture wines the likes of Yellow Tail and its ilk, wines that taste exactly the same year in year out, I encourage you to ‘stand by your wine’ even (or especial-ly) if it tastes different from one year to the next…that means it’s alive.

Domaine Richeaume, “Cuvée Tradi-tion” 2010 – I’ve long since forgotten the first time I tasted Richeaume, but the impression it left has remained. In a

world where once mediocrity predomi-nated (Provence in the 70s) Richeaume has been making organic wines of exceptional character for decades. The Tradition is made from the unorthodox combination of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Sexy Gr-enache gives feminine opulence, while sturdy Cabernet lends its masculine weight. The resulting wine is dark, rich with notes of vanilla and blackberries, and full and smooth on the palate. $33

Château Pibaron Bandol, 2007 – South of Richeaume lies the Mediter-ranean sea and the small appellation of Bandol. Bandol offers a unique microclimate which often presents a cloudless sky when beyond the protec-tive Sainte-Baume mountains it may be pouring with rain across the rest of Provence. Ideal, as strong sun is neces-sary in order to fully ripen Bandol’s Mourvèdre grape. Hailed as the apogee of Mourvèdre, Bandol makes a distinc-tive addition to any collection of fine reds. Notes of plum, dark cherry and tobacco box. $42

You can’t do this on five wooded acres.STORY by YVETTE STAFFORD

PHOTOGRAPHY by HAYLEY OSBORNE

If you want to grow flowers and you want to grow them well, you need sun. And this place has plenty of it.

“I lived for 25 years in a house on 5 acres in the woods and couldn’t grow many flowers,” says Nellysford flower farmer, Bev Lacey. “So when I moved here and Keith was farming vegetables … I thought ‘Oh, sunshine! I can grow flowers.’”

A match made in agricultural heaven, Blue Heron Farm is a place where Bev and Keith can get their hands dirty.

Page 10: Nelson County Life, Issue #91

10 NELSON COUNTY LIFE SEPTEMBER 2012

“I’d always gardened, but I’d never farmed. It was moving here that did it.”

In their early days, Bev and Keith ran a CSA that focused mostly on vegetables. Keith was growing some zinnias and sunflowers before Bev took over that niche. It was then that her flower fascination blos-somed and, at Keith’s encouragement, Bev began going to National Organization of Specialty Cut Flowers Group meetings.

“I learned there’s a big difference between gardening and farming,” Bev says. “In farming you’re growing what sells. I had just puttered in what I loved prior to this. Now I’m growing what you can get in an 18 inch length and something that will hold in a vase.”

So she starts her day at about 6:30 and is out on the farm an hour later, early enough to take advantage of the cool morning air. At prime flower picking time, the quiet fields scream with color.

“It can become overwhelming. I’m old enough to have arthritis, my knees and my hands, which is why I have the young women come and help me!”

Young women like Heidi Reed, who just came on board. Maria Borgman and Kelsey Vergin helped launch the season. And the woman who took these pictures, Hayley

Osborne, has been helping at Blue Heron for seven years.

Take a look around and the farm is knee deep in orders and waist high in dahlias waiting to be cut.

“The dahlias are probably my favorite now and that’s because it’s dahlia season. There’s so many dif-ferent ones.”

Grown from tubers, Bev admits

Page 11: Nelson County Life, Issue #91

she may have gotten some of the love for dahlias from her mother who used to grow them in Penn-sylvania. After her passing in 1993, Bev’s father kept digging up the dahlias and putting them back into the ground where they would multiply.

“I find that fascinating that you can start with one dahlia tuber, grow it for a year, enjoy the flowers, dig it up and have four or five tubers that you can share with people.”

Virginia’s not exactly known as dahlia coun-try but so far, they seem to be doing well at Blue Heron. They reveal their color in the fall when not much else does. But once the first frost arrives – typically in October – they’re done until next year.

“I dig every one up and then I clean them, store them above freezing for the winter,” says Bev. “Divide them, put them back in the next spring, probably May. And they multiply! That’s just real exciting!”

She won’t do the floral design – that’s for area florists like Amy Webb and Ken Ward – but the flowers are available at “pretty much wholesale,” Bev explains. They’re also available seasonally at Basic Necessities (Bev and Keith own the Nellys-ford wine and cheese shop). And brides have been known to buy them by the bucket.

“I’ve always said it does feed my soul ... They (flowers) bring joy to people. Who doesn’t smile?” NCL

Clear View Window Films

Authorized Window Film DealerPrestige Dealer Network

The reason for having all of those windows in your home is to enjoy your gorgeous fall views and the natural light in your home. It’s a shame to have them covered up with blinds or curtains. You have to run around lifting them up and down different times of the day to block the sun. That daily chore has probably become too much of a hassle and you just leave your blinds down all day. Think about that for one minute and ask yourself this. “Why do I have windows in my home and why did I move to Nelson County?” The views, right? So why are you elimi-nating your views with blinds? Is it fading, too much heat from the sun, or is it just too bright?

I have also been in homes where they don’t use blinds and this is what I typically see. Either furniture is being covered with sheets or nothing has been done at all. At least these homeowners still have their views and natural light, not to mention their living space is much more open and vibrant than being closed in with window treatments. It is still a huge compromise doing it those ways. These home owners still have tremendous heat gain and glare, plus the sun fades everything it touches, not just furni-ture. A great example of this would be hardwood floors. Depending on the type of wood, what it has been finished with, and the orientation of the room, I have seen signifi-cant fading on hardwood floors in less than a year.

3M™ Window Film installed by Clear View Window Tinting will eliminate any compromises you have been making. You can keep your breathtaking fall views.

For those of you without blinds, I can take care of ev-erything that fades, not just your furniture. You can soak in the views of turning leaves, without having to squint at the glare it creates or bake in the heat.

For those of you with blinds, your life and home will be much different. Your space will be brighter, more open, and YOU WILL HAVE VIEWS! No more running around opening and closing your blinds. Just leave them up during the day or get rid of them. Window tinting will reduce 4 to 5 times more heat than closed blinds, and of course it will take care of your fading issues.

“Hey Dad, What’s down there?” “Nothing, son, it’s just a big wilderness.” I was sitting on a rock ledge below the retaining wall, hidden from the eyes of the father and son who were discussing the view from 20 Minute Cliff at milepost 19 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just three miles from my home at Love, this is the place I come when I want a bit of peace. Many’s the time I’ve packed an early breakfast and ate it out on the rocks watching the sun come up and then drive back later that evening to enjoy hot coffee from a thermos, waiting for the huge red sun to sink slowly behind the mountains. I never tire of looking down on the deep crevice that runs from Montebello through the Tye River Valley below. It was the home of so many people I’ve known and heard about since moving here. That’s why I found the conversation between the boy and

his father so amusing. Unknowingly, all the father saw was an uninhabited endless wilderness of trees. Looking down the steep cleft, my eyes saw an entirely different picture. One that is heaped with memories. The first time I realized the view from the cliff was vastly different from what it used to be was the time I took my neighbor, Johnny Coffey, then in his 90s, for a ride to the overlook. Johnny, with a sweeping motion of his hand, said the sentence that has never ceased to amaze me. “Son, it’s hard to believe that 75 years ago you could look out and see no trees on those mountains.” What was he talking about; as far as the eye could see, every ridge was covered in a dense forest. Not thinking I heard him correctly I asked for more details. “Why, son, when I was a young boy, the mountains here were covered with Kentucky bluegrass ... grazing land for people’s cattle and sheep. There were a few trees here and there but for the most part it was all open land and you could see folk’s homeplaces along Fork Mountain and down below at White Rock.” I instinctively glanced downward at the white house far below, belonging to Hercy and Burgess Coffey. It was now the only visible house you could see from the cliff. It was said the overlook got its name from the people of White Rock who used it as a timepiece, knowing when the evening sun hit the rock face, they had exactly 20 minutes before dark would fall. Twenty minutes in which to shut the door to the chicken house and put the cows in the barn for the night. In addition to the Coffey’s, families by the name of Fitzgerald, Allen, Taylor, Campbell and Carr lived on these steep ridges, carving out a self-sufficient living from the rocky land. What a treasure-house of memories I have driving up through White Rock visiting Preacher Billy Morris who lived in Mitchell Fitzgerald’s old home and Annie Carr who had a perfect view of Squaremouth Rocks from the porch of her home. Attending family reunions at Raymond and Maggie Allen’s camp, high above Durham’s Run; or watching Annie Ramsey making biscuits on her wood cook stove. And the times I made the trip over to White Rock the night before trout season began to listen to the traditional music being played at all the camps along the river. Johnny would make the old time revivals come alive in my mind as he’d tell of people walking to the “night meetings” with lanterns in hand. “Why the mountains were lit up like lightening bugs there were so many folks walking to church back then.” Time has a way of changing everything. One generation’s memories are never the same as the one before. And seventy five years can make an amazing difference between one man seeing a “wilderness” and another one seeing “home.” NCL

Every Day is a Snow Day. WintergreenResort.com | 434-325-8165

A Golden CircleChristmas Day, 1807. That was the

day that the Virginia General Assem-bly created Nelson County from 472 square miles of our neighbor, Am-herst County. And, what a Christmas Gift! A region that is diverse as any other in Virginia – home to rugged mountains, mountain streams and river bottoms with rich farming land.

Early European settlers matched the diversity of the geography. The first to arrive were those who managed to acquire land patents from the Colonial Governor. Indentured servants and slaves who provided the hard labor necessary to manage the operations in such a remote area accompanied these wealthier families. Waves of hard working immigrants followed – Scotch-Irish, Germans, Dutch, French Huguenots, and English. Each group arrived with their own religions, cus-toms and languages.

As the region grew from a frontier to a more mature development, busi-ness operations started to appear – small local stores and mills that pro-vided goods and services. A few large businesses temporarily operated at a

feverish pitch in Nelson County dur-ing the late 1800s and early 1900s – mostly timber and mining operations that closed down when their harvest was complete or their products were no longer in demand.

Sprinkled throughout the county were family stores and businesses that met the needs of the citizens – groceries and hard goods, utilities, funeral homes, medical services, and auto repairs. Family farms, orchards and packing operations survived and adapted as well - benefiting from the railroad services built and left behind by the timber operators. These busi-nesses became the real backbone of Nelson County.

This month, the Nelson County Chamber of Commerce will recognize some of these businesses as members of the Golden Circle – those locally owned businesses that have been in operation for at least 50 years. Those of us who have operated a small business are well aware that this is no small feat.

One of the businesses can trace its beginning to the 1750s and many oth-ers date to the late 1800s. As you can imagine, they have many stories to

tell. Collectively, they have over 1500 years of providing goods and services to the citizens of Nelson County and employment to their friends, neigh-bors and family members.

My advice for many new small business owners is to reach out to other members in the business community. Have you considered starting your own business? Are you struggling with the management of your current business? Imagine the resource that we have in our community – leaders of these small businesses that have decades of experi-ence in surviving economic recessions and tragic storms.

Would you like to meet these leaders of our business community? On October 16th, the Nelson County Chamber of Commerce will honor the Golden Circle of Businesses at their annual dinner.

The Chamber is an association of business leaders that fosters the strength of small businesses in Nelson County and cultivates social relations among its members and the community. Join the Chamber as it grows and adapts to the changing needs of the 21st century business community in Nelson County.

To build or not to buildIf you can find it, buy it! If you can’t find it, build it!

Marlo Allen, frequently referred to as “That Girl,” calls Nelson County home. In fact, she grew up in Nelson and besides being a Realtor, is a family business partner at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery in Nellysford. Marlo provides real estate services in Nelson and surrounding counties.

Ever been shoe shopping and even though the store has hundreds of options, you leave empty handed? With so many different styles, colors and designs, certainly you should have been able to find at least one pair to meet your needs. Sometimes it isn’t just about what you need, but what you want. This same scenario could be applied to our real estate market. There is a lot of inventory, yet prospective home buyers may not be finding that “special” place. If the shoe fits so to speak, buy it. If not, it may be time to think outside that box! Here are a few reasons to consider new construction.

Site selection; The road block is the… road. Seriously, the problem with not being able to find the perfect home may not be an issue with the home itself, but with the site. You may not like the proximity to the road, the blue giraffe next door, or the lack of

views or privacy. The solution is to start with your perfect building site. When you build, you can choose the land. Keep in mind that the land that has everything, except the blue giraffe next door, may be in demand. Be pre-pared to pay a premium for a premium parcel. FYI: There are currently more than 240 parcels of land for sale in Nelson County.

Creative input: Sally home seller may have like cramped, dark spaces or polka dot wall paper. When Sally seller built the home, the trend may not have been for bright, open floor plans with neutral paint colors. When you build, you get to choose your home style, floor plan, and favorite cabinets, countertops, flooring, appli-ances, lighting, and fixtures…

Budget friendly planning: If you don’t have a butler, you may not need the butler’s pantry. Why pay for granite if you are a Formica kind of guy. There are features and systems

in a home that may not add value to your life and there is no sense paying more for something that you won’t appreciate.

Less maintenance and repairs: Existing built homes may be dated with systems and structural com-ponents nearing the end of their functional life span. Whether it is the HVAC unit or the roof, the home may need routine maintenance or replace-ment. With a new home, repairs, and repair expenses, should be minimal. New homes have warranties. In Virginia a one year builder war-ranty is a minimal standard. Many homes will convey with a 10 year warranty against structural defects. Before building, make sure that you understand the warranty terms and coverage.

More energy efficient: Building materials and practices change over time. Today’s windows, doors, and insulation materials are more ad-

vanced. Energy efficient appliances and mechanical systems offer consid-erable savings. How a home is built and equipped can make a big differ-ence in your energy consumption and your bottom line. Some practices may be standard and others optional; make sure that you understand the cost saving features available to you.

That new feeling: You know that new car smell… that high comes with homes too! Sometimes you just have to have it.

An existing built home can be the right option for many buyers. How-ever, if you have been looking and looking and not finding that perfect home, it may be time to build.

The Club HouseIn October of 2011, I decided that

my driveway had to change from go-ing between my house and my garage to route traffic around the backside of the garage (old shed) and above the house. The reason was mostly to protect my young son from com-mercial and workers’ vehicles while they enter and leave the property. Obviously the impact was greater than just moving the drive or I would not be writing about it. Immediately after moving the driveway, I began to notice things that I really had not noticed before, mainly that the trees on that side of my driveway were spectacular and that my garage (old shed) was in desperate need of a facelift. The project began in 2011 and terminates this October.

The grandeur of large deciduous trees and expanses of lawn cannot be over emphasized. Behind my garage is a grove of poplars that stand over 50 feet in height in a sea of rolling fescue. After marveling at this new and much nicer vantage point for my entrance, I decided that the first thing that was needed was more. Not more shrubs, bulbs or perennials – but more poplars spaced out, intertwined with grass. My thought that the very heart of an entrance to a landscape is simplicity – flowing lines, a high canopy (or vertical element) and a common thread that connects the entire landscape as one (grass). This does not mean that a variety of high canopy trees are not an option along a drive, but sometimes consistency in your choices can tend to allow the canopy and trunk to become like that calming voice in the background along the route.

The garage (old shed) was a dif-ferent story. The day that the sid-ing was removed, a unique view of a neighbor’s vineyard, the rolling hills around my property and the proximity to my house enticed my

wife and me to give the garage a ‘utilitarian change’ – from garage to entertainment/project area. Consider-ing how we would use the structure dictated how the structure would be built – mainly the need for an open structure with electricity and water with a semi-controlled environment (wood stove and very large doors and windows). After months of Googling for photos of potential structures, we finally rested on a high, fixed window design (7 foot windows) on the side with the best view, two large sliding ‘doors’ with windows affixed in their center for allowing air to cool the area on the adjacent walls and two large sliding doors at the entrance so that the building could be opened 8 feet wide for entertaining and construction projects. The siding would be ‘rough cut’ timbers from a local sawmill to keep with the other outbuildings on our property which are mostly older barns, while vintage lighting, an old antique sink and other farm paraphernalia would keep with the old barn look. The front of the garage would be modified with a ‘lean to’ tin roof area to allow for wood storage and for grilling in foul weather. The point is this – flexibil-ity and always looking for unique ‘vantage points’ of your structures and property. To the extent that a structure has a very determined us-age, you should always keep an open mind as to what potential lies beyond a structure’s current usage. Even slight modifications to outbuildings and garages alike can offer interest-ing perspectives on landscapes and offer new ‘rooms’ that not only add value, but serve a unique, unfulfilled purpose. The end result could be a major opportunity for your home.

What started as a simple project to move our driveway turned into a complex vision and late evening work with a 15 month old pulling at my jeans…life is good.

STARTING IN OCTOBER!

The Lunch Box

Time: 12-12:45pm Mondays and Wednesdays

Think of nine people you know sitting down to join you for a meal. Statistics predict that at least one of the people at your table is probably depressed. One in ten-- that is com-mon. When you are depressed, noth-ing looks good. A compliment seems like an insult. Getting out of bed is an enormous chore. Any ache or pain feels twice as bad as it should. A once loved hobby now has no ap-peal. Sleep is too little or too much. Crying feels as easy as breathing. Energy is gone; concentration is nil; feelings of guilt abound; appetite is off. Is reading this weighing you down? Depression is a huge and heavy weight.

But, there is a full spectrum of moods out there, and diagnosing someone with depression is not always easy. Everyone has good and bad days, weeks and months. It is normal to feel some of the above symptoms after a loved one dies. Having a major change in your life? (A new job or home?) Sure, you might not sleep well for a while or find yourself distracted. It is when these symptoms start to become the

norm for you, or when they keep getting worse and not better, or when your life/work/friendships are suffer-ing because of them that it is time to start worrying.

The first thing to do is recognize if your mood is going downhill. If it is, it’s time to do everything you can to turn that around. Make sure you are eating healthy foods. Breathe fresh air and feel sunshine on your face everyday. Pray. Exercise—sweat out some frustrations. And more important than anything else: TALK. Find a friend, family member, pastor, or counselor and talk. There is real healing power in unloading your troubles on a concerned listener.

If all of that doesn’t help you get back on track, it may be time to visit your doctor. He or she can help you focus on what you need to do to feel better, point you to a good counselor and/or try medicines if appropriate.

The Mid Day WorkoutIs there benefit to quick work

outs? The mid- day or lunch workout has many benefits for you and also for your employer. Get-ting out of the work environment and exercising is an incredible way to relieve stress. In addition, your body releases endorphins (natural chemicals in your body that make you feel good) after exercise and you will have more energy for the second half of your work day making you more productive at work and with increased mental focus. You won’t have that post lunch sleep drag to muddle through. Your boss may thank you for that. You may not need the extra tall café latte to “make it through” the rest of the day.

The physical benefits include increasing strength, power, stamina and mental focus.

Circuit type exercise routines increase the heart rate for a short period focusing on one exercise. Then each individual in the group switches “stations” and works on the next area and continues on. The

sessions can be 30- 40 minutes. It can be fast paced and can target different body regions effectively. The exer-cises incorporate strength or endur-ance muscle fibers depending on the exercise. For example, you might be jump roping at one station and doing pushups at another one.

Because you are exercising with a group, the members in the group can be very supportive and encourag-ing. It becomes something you look forward to doing and something very positive and fun which also aids in how we cope with the stressors in our lives. You’ll be amazed at the benefit you will receive from this type of workout.

What a difference a few months makes.“I spent the whole month of May getting ready for bank-

ruptcy,” Wintergreen Resort General Manager Hank Thiess said. “I just had no idea what was going to happen. Whether someone was going to buy it, carve it up into 3 or 4 pieces and sell it off. Nobody was planning to put any money into it.”

That is, until West Virginia coal magnate Jim Justice came along. Just months after purchasing the Resort and saving it from bankruptcy, the new owner announced a $6 million investment aimed at doubling snowmaking production. Site work has already begun on a new 5 million gallon water tank. Thiess says the investment also includes key technological upgrades.

“The double down off of it is not just the tank, but the water cooling and the additional snowmaking guns. So, it’s more than just a double down of water, but then a real nice bump with the technology. The combination of those two is truly a game changer for us.”

The plan is to make more snow over night, and not blow it on skiers and boarders during the daytime hours. And besides upgrading the Resort’s snowmaking equipment, Thiess says guests can look forward to other property improvements due for a face lift. NCL

OCTOBER 2012 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 31

“People really laughed, cocked an eyebrow and said ‘good luck,’” recalls Blue Mountain Brewery co-owner Taylor Smack.

Sure, it sounded insane. After all, who hasn’t ever tried to hatch a business with friends around a fireplace drinking an adult beverage?

Taylor and wife, Mandi, met several years ago in Chicago and had chatted about the idea of opening a brewery or pub together. But like most buzzes, it wore off.

Fast forward to 2004 when they moved next door to Matt Nucci in Greenwood, who was brewing beer at home. By late 2005, the trio had a business plan. It came in a navy blue folder. At least that’s what I remember filing away in the “Maybe one day” pile.

“People would ask ‘Why are you building it out here?,’” said Matt. “I look at those old pictures, I just look at where we are today and what we have accomplished in just five years is pretty amazing.”

As any parent will tell you, the first five years go by in a flash. Since opening the brewery, Mandi and Taylor have become parents twice over. Matt’s little girl just celebrated her first birthday. Making beer and making babies can put you “in a fog,” as Taylor describes it.

“I mean it’s fun thinking back when we had literally six employees. But I can’t even remember what it was like.”

Mandi does.“I remember having my first baby in a Baby Bjorn behind the bar, bar tending.”“I remember washing dishes that first year,” Matt said. And the kitchen was tiny. The original brew pub began with eight tables. Since then, the

brewery has expanded to accommodate demand and can now offer seating to hundreds in the pub and out on the patio.

“An average Tuesday is better than a good Saturday was our first and second year,” Taylor said.

Mandi – who was running the books – remembers it well.“Our first year we were just trying to make our payroll. That was with all three of us

working our butts off. We had $60.00 days, thinking ‘What are we doing this for?’.”And then, there were the party fouls. Like closing for the full week of Christmas in year 1.“Stupid!,” Mandi is quick to add. They can laugh about it now.And then there was the pizza incident. People loved them but the tiny kitchen couldn’t

keep up. So they stopped making pizzas. After all, they made beer, not pies, right?“We went through this real crazy period in the beginning where ‘This was our business

plan’ and ‘This is what we’re doing.’” said Taylor. “But we learned to evolve into what people wanted. When we totally gave in to that, we became the best business we could ever be.”

So the pizzas came back as did people’s appetites for both local food and beer.

Bill and Joan Nichols – who split their time between Richmond and Nelson County, have been regulars from the start.

“They just wanted to make beer,” Bill recalls over a pint of Full Nelson. “But because it’s Nelson County, the fact they were selling pizza and food, they found themselves in this big restaurant deal. Watching them make the transition from just wanting to make beer to watch it building and building upon itself ... It’s excit-ing.”

“We really enjoy the people. We also enjoy the beer,” said Joan, whose favorite brew is the Kolsch. “The staff they keep hiring, generally young, they have other things going in their lives, but they work here because they like the work and apparently they make pretty good money. If they are a student or something, it’s a way to supplement that. For others it’s a living.”

Blue Mountain currently employs 82 people at the Afton location, and an additional 13 at their recently opened bottling facility in Colleen. The brewery has also become an event venue for such gatherings as company parties and weddings. Adding to its list of milestones is the brewery’s recent debut into the Big Apple craft brew scene.

“If you’d told me that I would have laughed and said ‘That dude is crazy: 82 employees, two breweries, selling in New York.’ I would have laughed you off the field had you told me that 5 years ago,” Taylor says.

Cheers to that. NCL
