THE BEGINNING…
• NEW JERSEY WAS WON BY THE ENGLISH FROM THE DUTCH IN 1664.
• THE FIRST PERSON THE STEP FOOT ON JERSEY LAND WAS HENRY HUDSON, WHO NOW HAS A RIVER THAT BARES HIS NAME. IN 1664, THE DUKE OF YORK ASSIGNED LORD BERKELEY AND SIR GEORGE CARTERET THE LAND.
• SOME OF THE FIRST PEOPLE TO HAVE INHABITED NEW JERSEY WERE FROM DELAWARE. THESE PEOPLE WERE CALLED THE LENNI LENAPE PEOPLE. THERE WERE THREE MAIN TRIBES: THE UNAMI(LENAPE) TRIBE, THE MINISINK(MUNSEE) TRIBE, AND THE UNALACHTIGO TRIBE. THE TAINO TRIBE ALSO MIGRATED TO NEW JERSEY AFTER THE EUROPEANS ARRIVED, BUT MOST OF THE NATIVE AMERICANS WERE FORCED TO LEAVE NEW JERSEY, WHEN EASTERN TRIBES WERE BEING DISPLACED BY COLONIAL EXPANSION.
POLITICS!
• NEW JERSEY WAS RUN AS A DEMOCRATIC LAND.
• IN 1665, PHILIP CARTERET, WAS APPOINTED GOVERNOR.
• IN 1738 NEW JERSEY WAS SEPARATED FROM NEW YORK UNDER ITS OWN ROYAL GOVERNMENT.
• TRENTON BECAME ITS CAPITAL IN 1790.
economy
The population of New Jersey grew from 15,000 in 1700 to about 184,000 in 1790.
Agriculture had been supplemented by considerable mining and the processing of copper and iron and by the production of lumber, leather, and glass.
New Jersey produced grain or corn, and breeded all sorts of cattle, in great quantities, with which they supplied the merchants of New York and Philadelphia, to carry on their trade, to all the American Islands.
CULTURE
• The people of New Jersey allowed cultural diversity.
• They built their own homes.
• They were Puritans.
RELIGION• The people of New Jersey were Quakers. It is a
Christian movement founded by George Fox and posses peaceful values. New Jersey was actually owned by Quakers.

boundary of New Jersey.
