This PowerPoint presenting the changes in the Roman Missal Third Edition.

You may use this PowerPoint in any way that will benefit you or your community to prepare for the changes. It is suggested that you watch the three videos available on the web page on the New Missal on the website: www.dioceseofmonterey.org that accompany the PowerPoint. The timing of the use of the videos is identified by slides throughout the presentation with the name of the video on it.

You will also find a few discussion questions throughout this presentation, it is suggested that you take a few minutes to reflect on these questions yourself, or within the group watching the presentation, before moving on. This entire presentation, along with the videos (about 5 minutes each) and discussions (about 3 minutes each) should take under an hour.

When you finish this presentation it is highly recommended that you watch the “movie” on the mass found on the same web page. The “movie” gives a basic but thorough overview of our Sunday Liturgy (total time 13 minutes).

• A brief background and clarification

(what’s changing & what’s not)

on the Roman Missal Third Edition…

Page 6: New missal workshop power point

It is not a “New Mass” &we are not returning to the “Old Mass”,

this is simply a new translation of a new edition of the Roman Missal.

• A new edition of the Missale Romanum, the Latin Roman Missal:– Was promulgated (in Latin) by Pope John Paul II in 2000, – this required all the countries of the world to create translations of this

new missal.

• The new missal has added features: – prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, – additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, – additional Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Intentions, – and updated and revised rubrics (rules) for the celebration of the Mass.

• In the English-speaking world, a common translation of the text was sought through the International Commission for English in the Liturgy (ICEL) to ensure uniformity. Now all of the English speaking countries will use the same prayers for mass (this has not been the case previously).

Page 7: New missal workshop power point

Vatican guidelines for translation(and why did it take so long?)

• The translation was carried out under the newest Vatican guidelines for translating prayers into modern local languages.

• This method of translation changed in the process, urging a stronger adherence to the original Latin wording and structure (literal vs. dynamic). This change happened after the translation process had begun which required going back to page one to redo the translation work that had already been accomplished.

• The unique style of the Roman Rite is closely maintained. Texts are marked by a heightened style of English speech and a grammatical structure that closely follows the Latin text.

• In addition, many biblical and poetic images were added, for example:

• “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof…” (previously, “Lord I am not worthy to receive you…”)

• Communion Rite, taken from Matthew 8:8)

• and “…from the rising of the sun to its setting” (previously, “from east to west…”)• (Eucharistic Prayer III, taken from Psalm 113

Page 8: New missal workshop power point

Particular adaptations to the U.S. are included.

• The new English-language Missal also includes Vatican-approved adaptations requested by the Bishops of the United States as well as texts for observances that are proper to the United States:

– Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton,

– and prayers for Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day.

Page 9: New missal workshop power point

• The translation of several phrases in the Order of Mass had been previously decided by the Vatican in the instruction Liturgiam authenticam, including:

“And with your spirit.”

• In the case of the response “Et cum spiritu tuo”, what had originally been translated in 1973 as “And also with you” becomes now “And with your spirit.”

• This translation places the English translation in line with the way that this has always been translated in most other languages, including Spanish, French, German, and Italian to the response to the greeting, “The Lord be with you”.

Page 10: New missal workshop power point

Other changes in common prayers:

• The priest/presider has the most changes:

• In the Collects – the opening prayers and Prayers After Communion.

• In the Eucharistic Prayers – Numbers I, II, III, IV.

• In some greetings or invitations to prayer:– “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all…”

• In total, the document that outlines the changes for the priest/presider totals nineteen pages…

• the peoples changes encompass only four pages.

Page 11: New missal workshop power point

The people’s changes in common prayers:

• People are going to find a number of changes beyond “and with your spirit”,in the translation of common prayers throughout.

• This includes the various parts of the Penitential act (“I confess to Almighty God…”),

• the Gloria, the Creed (both in the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed), the Sanctus (Holy, Holy, Holy), the Mystery of Faith, and the invitation to communion.

“For many.”

• One of the points that has generated the most discussion is the translation of pro multis, presently translated for all… currently we say:

• “which will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven.”

• In the new edition of the Roman Missal, “for all” will be changed to “for many.”

Why? - I thought Jesus died for everyone…

• First, “for many” is a more accurate translation of the Latin phrase pro multis than the present translation.

• Also, this is the wording used in the Biblical narrative account of the Last Supper found in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark.

• Finally, even though it is a dogmatic teaching of the Church that Christ died on the Cross for all men and women, the expression “for many” is reflective also of the fact that this salvation is not brought automatically, without one’s own willing participation, but rather is a gift to be accepted.

Page 21: New missal workshop power point

What’s not changing.

• The structure and rite of the Mass itself is not changing. The Sunday Mass is still the – “Source and Summit” of our Catholic faith.

• Some texts of the Mass are not changing, including the Lord’s Prayer and the Lamb of God.

• The translation of Scripture readings used at Mass (the Lectionary) are NOT changing.

• Much of the hymnody and other chants sung at Mass will not be affected by the changes.

Page 22: New missal workshop power point

These changes present an opportunity for renewal in the Liturgy…

• Use this as an opportunity…

• …to pause to think about the words you are saying every time you participate in the Mass.

• …to deepen your understanding of the Sacred Liturgy, of its meaning and importance in your life.

• …to put yourself in contact with the Church’s tradition of prayer and create an historical awareness.

• …to pause and reflect on what, after so many years, you may have taken for granted and that such meditation will redound in an enrichment of your spiritual and liturgical life.

• If this change creates new reflection and new awareness then…

…this Change is good.

• How can you help others?
