Dear Parents/Carers
Walk to School Congratulations to those folk who sup-ported the Walk to School day last Fri-day. Mrs Jacinta Burns organised the event and was supported by Di Gibbons and Terri Beagley. From the photo-graph below you can see that they’ve arrived minus lipstick and fancy hair do’s and dressed in trackys and runners in-stead! Thank you to Renee Gibb for coping so admirably with the unex-pected increase in numbers at the breakfast table.
Extra Curricular Activities Many of our children are engaged in a variety of activities outside the hours of school. All of these activities contribute to the overall process of education. We should celebrate, as a community, the achievements of our students. On page 3 we have a write up about Cooper Har-rison and his success in baseball. Con-gratulations, Cooper. If you have any interesting snippets you’d like to share please drop them into the office to Leonie Harrison.
Visitors on School Property All parents and carers visiting the school for any reason must sign in at the office and give a reason as to why you are here and who you will be meeting with. This does not apply to school events such as assemblies, Parents Night, Mothers’ Day and so on.
Sharing Custody After parents separate, they need to find a new way of parenting that works for them and their children. Some divorced and/or separated couples continue to share parent-ing, or share care, where each par-ent spends a considerable amount of time caring for their children.
The most positive shared care ex-periences involve parents who have a cooperative relationship and are child-focused and flexible. These parents make an effort to maintain good communication with each other and avoid exposing their children to parental conflict. Below are tips for parents on how to create a positive shared custody experience with their child.
• Tell your child/young person what’s going on.
• Show them that you still love and care for them.
• Listen to your child
• Support your child
• Be consistent and predictable in your care giving.
• Be responsive.
• Separate parenting issues from relationship issues.
• Work together with the other parent.
• Avoid conflict and resolve is-sues with your ex-partner.
• Create a space for chil-dren/young people.
• Encourage your child to talk to someone they trust.
• Seek counselling if required.
Cheers, Marg

We celebrated National Simultaneous Story time on May 22. At exactly 9am (WST) 130 students joined in the reading of the story THE WRONG BOOK by Nick Bland. Over a hundred thousand children from all around Australia joined in the reading of THE WRONG BOOK at exactly the same time. After a countdown to 9am, we started, and to think we were all doing this SIMULTANEOUSLY gave us a real sense of community. In keeping with our school motto of THINKING OF OTHERS, the students in B6 made great book marks, with tassels, to give to the children in B4 to celebrate this event. Well done, B6.
B4, B5 and B6 excursion to the Swan View Tunnel
On May the 22nd B4, B5 and B6 went for a visit to the Swan View Tunnel. Here are some comments from the children. “The best thing about the Swan View Tunnel was when the man scared us and Logan, Jessica and Latoya were scared. It was so cool”. Cruze Skidmore I went to the Swan View Tunnel and we found lots of things. Everybody made ghost noises. I liked it so much” Logan Campbell “We went to Swan View Tunnel. It was fun. I love the part when Mrs Lovi found the treasure and put 20cents and one bandaid”. Riddhi Kanojia

Helping your child with maths
As your child progresses: • Get them to help with counting by asking whether you have enough of what you need, your child
should decide to use counting to find the answer.
• Play games where your child has to tell you how many there are without counting, for example quickly hold up some fingers on both hands and ask How many on each hand? Or How many fingers alto-gether?
Later: • look through catalogues together and ask your child to help you work out if you
have enough money to buy a small number of items
• Play board games where children handle large amounts of play money
• Point out times when multiplication might be helpful, for example if each family member will eat three sausages for dinner, how many do you need to buy?
• Try computer aided programs Mrs Armstrong

Moto-Safe Incursion
On Tuesday the Yr three and four students attended a Moto-Safe presentation in the undercover area. The talk related to
safety when riding motor bikes and four wheel quad bikes. The children listened to the talk and watched a DVD. Brahim
Woods got to dress up in all the safety gear. Have a look at the photos. We were all given a show bag about Moto-Safe.
On Wednesday the 22nd of May, the All Girls Dockers Cup took place. The girls played 6 games but only won 1. Although we didn’t win we found some great football players and had lots of fun.
Dockers Cup
During the April school holidays one of our students, Cooper Harrison, was chosen to compete in two overseas baseball competitions. First up was the Dubai Interna- tional baseball competition, played in Dubai. His team played against Singapore, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia. They finished 5th in this competition. Next the team headed to Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Tournament. They played against the Hong Kong All Stars teams and another WA team-The Stingrays. They finished 2nd. This weekend Cooper is off again, this time to Queensland for the Australian National Little League Baseball Championships. There are 5 WA teams being represented and there are 20 teams in the competitions. The winner of the the National Championships will represent Australia in the World Little League Championships in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA in August.
Well done, and Good Luck Cooper!

Many thanks to our helpers, Dave, Gaye, Roseanne, Nicole, Karen and Teresa for their assis-tance in our first sausage sizzle fundraiser this term. Again it was a big success and to date a total of $1 316.30 has been raised from only four sausage sizzles. We are proposing to have another seven before the children go on their camp to Rottnest and if we keep getting the sup-port from the school community we should be able to raise close to $3 000 which would be a remarkable achievement and would result in each child who attends camp receiving a discount of close to $60. Our next sausage sizzle will be held on Monday June 10th and order forms will go out on Friday. Thanks once again for your support.

Transitioning to High School
Moving on to High School is an exciting and challenging time for parents and students. It is timely to remind the community of the opportunities that exist in secondary education in our area.
Our local intake school is Swan View SHS, which offers an Education Department endorsed Specialist Drama Program called the Fame Academy. Several other unique programs are offered to provide oppor-tunities for students with varying interests. They include; the Motor V8 Program which leads onto engi-neering in the upper years, Media Arts Design, Basketball, Follow the Dream (Indigenous Engagement), Jewellery Making, Sound Way Literacy Improvement and the ACE Program (Achieving Curriculum Ex-cellence). Swan View SHS has achieved outstanding results in improved school attendance and in the general behaviour of the students. Congratulations to all staff members.
Other secondary venues offer specialist programs. Governor Stirling SHS has Football, Netball, Engi-neering and ArtsMedia. Darling Range Sports Academy offers a range of sporting specialist areas. Our students are outside these two local intake areas and need to apply, with references, to attend spe-cialist programs at either of these schools.
