Newsletter – Issue 7 – January 2015
The DEMCAMER project is now at month 42th. After almost 4 years we are now in the
phase of building and testing the prototype reactors for the four different research
lines. Two prototype reactors (WGS and FTS) will be based on palladium supported
membranes and the other two reactors (OCM and ATR) will be based on MIEC
membranes. Final results will be presented at the next 12th International Conference
on Catalysis in Membrane Reactors (ICCMR12) which will be held from June 22 – 25,
2015 in Szczecin (Poland) where DEMCAMER consortium will have an exhibition stand.
Dissemination and collaboration with other major European Projects are a major point
for the DEMCAMER project. More than 95 publications and/or conference
participations have been presented by the DEMCAMER consortium until now. Besides,
a joint seminar with other three EU Project was held in November 2014 in order to
share experiences in the field of membranes and membrane reactors. The package of
presentations together with the interactive discussion gave a very clear picture of the
status of palladium membrane technology and the critical issues to be addressed in
the near future.

 Novel reactor design
The aim of DEMCAMER is to develop innovative multifunctional Catalytic Membrane Reactors
(CMR) based on new nano-architectured catalysts and selective membranes materials to
improve their performance, durability, cost effectiveness and sustainability (lower
environmental impact and use of new raw materials) over four selected chemical processes for
pure hydrogen, liquid hydrocarbons and ethylene production:
 Autothermal Reforming, (ATR)
 Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, (FTS)
 Water Gas Shift, (WGS)
 Oxidative Coupling of Methane, (OCM)
Moreover DEMCAMER will bring the proof of concept of these novel CMRs by the set-up and
validation of pilot prototypes relevant for each process.

2. DEMCAMER in progress
2.1. Project’s Current State
We reached the last months of DEMCAMER. After
almost 4 years we are now in the phase of
building and testing the prototype reactors for
the four different research lines.
Two prototype reactors will be based on
palladium supported membranes. The WGS
prototype is a packed bed membrane reactor
with around 0.2 m2 of Pd membranes. The
reactor has been built and included in a
standalone test unit. After the factory acceptance
tests it will be tested under realistic conditions, in
particular for high temperature WGS. The other
reactor based on Pd membranes is a FTS reactor
where we intend to distribute hydrogen along the
reactor to control the product distribution. This
reactor is smaller than the WGS reactor and it is
under construction at TECNALIA.
At the same time, we are building the two
reactors based on MIEC membranes. A
membrane reactor for OCM contains 20 MIEC
membranes that are currently being sealed with
RAB technique. The same membranes will be also
used in a bigger ATR reactor under construction
that contains 80 membranes. Both reactors will
be tested with novel catalysts produced in
DEMCAMER.
All the results generated in these last months of
DEMCAMER and especially the reactor tests will
be presented at the ICCMR conference in June
2015.

2.2 Workshop on “Scale-up of Pd membrane Technology: From
Fundamental Understanding to Pilot Demonstration
On November 20 & 21, 2014, in Petten (The Netherlands) it has been held the Joint Workshop on
“Scale-up of Pd Membrane Technology From Fundamental Understanding to Pilot Demonstration”.
The workshop has been organized by the join collaboration of DEMCAMER, CARENA, CoMETHy,
ReforCELL, four research projects funded by the European Commission through FP7.
The two-day workshop organized at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands ECN and
including presentations, interactive discussions and a visit to the ECN membrane test facilities and
biomass gasification and gas clean-up facilities, brought together more than 70 participants from 17
countries with a broad participation of industrial stakeholders besides representatives of research
institutions and universities. In addition to presentations from members of the four organizing
projects, there was also a significant amount of presentations from the representatives from
industry. The presentations covered a good breadth of topics that are critical for palladium
membrane technology scale-up: from the fundamentals of palladium membranes, hydrogen
transport mechanisms and long term behavior, to various concepts of membrane module design
and system integration; from lab-scale testing to industrial pilot plant operational insights.
Both days of presentations were finalized with an interactive discussion session on the relevant
topics of the presentation sessions of the day. The package of presentations together with the
interactive discussion gave a very clear picture of the status of palladium membrane technology and
the critical issues to be addressed in the near future.
