Living His promise in service to others
Verde River in winter
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government
shall be upon his shoulders: and his name shall be called Wonderful,
Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no
end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to
establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for
ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

News from our Vicar
The Rev. Grayce O’Neill Rowe “How lucky I am to have known someone who was so hard to say goodbye to.”
(Anonymous quote found on the internet)
As I write this, my last newsletter article, for the many someone’s to
whom I am finding it hard to say goodbye, I realize how very lucky I have been
to have served as your Vicar. Living among you has given me the opportunity to
observe and join with a group of people who love their church and who are
willing to give their all to see that it grows and prospers. You have been so
generous in accepting me as your very part time Vicar and for that I will be
forever thankful. Thank you for giving me the reason for saying, “how lucky I am
to have known someone who was so hard to say goodbye to.”
Some have asked how long I have to stay away after I leave on
December 9. Others have asked if I can continue to worship at St. Thomas. The
Diocesan policy on leave-taking is that the priest stays away for one year. The

policy is in place because we all need time to say goodbye so that you can say
an honest and committed hello to your new Vicar. I have so loved being here
that I, too, need to stay away so that I can begin my new journey in whatever
way God, (and the bishop!) calls.
And so, because it has been my privilege to support the mission and
ministry of St. Thomas, after prayerful reflection, I set before you my
understanding of our leave-taking. I agree to pray for the ongoing mission of St.
Thomas and its new Vicar. As you and I end our pastoral relationship I will
refrain from any language or behavior that could undermine the development
of the relationship between you and your new Vicar. I will abstain from offering
support or advice to anyone involved in a congregational disagreement. I will
decline requests for pastoral services made by members of the congregation,
including baptisms, weddings, funerals, anniversaries, or visiting the sick and
homebound, except as invited by the new Vicar. I will consult with the new Vicar
regarding attendance at worship and special events after being away from St.
Thomas for twelve months. Deirdre and I are professional colleagues and as
such will have a continuing relationship with the understanding that we will not
enter into conversation or actions that would undermine the relationship
between Deirdre and the new Vicar.
I will be eager to hear through the Diocesan grapevine about all of the
wonderful work that you will continue to do together. Please know that you
have captured a part of my heart and I will forever be thankful for our time
together.
At our Christmas Eve service last year you delighted me by together
shouting “Shazam!” We shouted Shazam because the news of Jesus’ birth is
so very incredible that all we can say is Shazam. Once again I find myself
wanting to shout Shazam. As I reflect on our time together, a time that has
been filled with such joy for me, a time that leaves me without the words to
adequately say thank you, I find myself realizing that all that I can say is
Shazam!
With blessings and much love,
Grayce
News from our Deacon,
The Rev. Deirdre Moulinier Hellos, Goodbyes and Grief During the Holidays
It’s all a celebration of life. This Advent Season we will be celebrating the
ministry of, and saying goodbye to Vicar Grayce Rowe. We’ll be having a going
away party after her last sermon at St. Thomas on December 9th and
remembering the gifts that she brought to all of us here. We will be wishing her
well on the next leg of the journey that God has set for her.
Next, we will be interviewing, and I hope welcoming a new Vicar who will
bring different talents to a new call to ministry. From what I understand the
person being considered for the position of part-time Vicar at St. Thomas brings
a wealth of wisdom and experience to her ministry. I am so looking forward to
meeting her!
During this time, we will also be remembering loved ones, sometimes for
the first time since the loved one’s death. This again is a celebration of life. It’s
not easy to get through these holidays when you are missing someone special
but there are ways to find comfort in the Gospels and the Church.
1. Tell your friends and family at St. Thomas that you are having a hard
time. Holidays and anniversaries are particularly tough. Don’t be afraid or
embarrassed to cry in front of your friends at St. Thomas. We all understand.
The loss of a loved one is something that many of us have experienced and we
want to be there for you
2. Get involved in decorating the church or writing Christmas Cards to
inmates at Perryville Prison. Find a Toys for Tots program or other such
program in the community to participate with.
3. Spend time with other people. Don’t stay home alone. If you live far
away from family, let parishioners know that you will be alone. It’s always fun
to watch the chaos of Christmas morning…at someone else’s house!
4. This is also a good time to attend the Grief Discussion Group at St.
Thomas on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at noon. Bring a sandwich to eat and/or
share.
5. Come over and talk to me on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon at the
church. I’d love to sit and just talk.
Most importantly though, listen carefully to the words of the Gospel this
season. The Gospel always brings hope to us because it speaks of our Blessed
Savior’s birth and new beginnings during Advent, as well as, the hope of
eternal life for us and our loved ones. Join us in celebrating all life this Advent.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Deirdre
Senior Warden’s Corner with
Barbara Evans Where does the time go? Here I am writing an article for the December
2018/January 2019 Newsletter and it seems, not too long ago, that I was
writing my first Newsletter article of 2018. I can honestly say that even though
this year went by so fast, it has been an amazing year!
We began 2018 in high speed as we spent much of January planning
and organizing our Food Pantry which opened to the public on February 13.
What a blessing it was then and a blessing it continues to be. We can all pat
ourselves on the back for such a successful Food Pantry that serves our
community.
Lent came next in 2018 and, once again a few curious Episcopalians
attended the Wednesday Soup Suppers at the homes of various parishioners.
We enjoyed spiritual lessons and marvelous homemade soups. Holy Week
followed Lent and ended with a very special Easter Vigil Saturday evening
service, a first for St. Thomas. Easter Sunday was, of course and as usual, a
spectacular worship experience.
As we moved right along through 2018, we began planning our April in
Paris event. This event, thanks to Alexa Hokanson and all her hard work, as
well as other volunteers, was a huge success.
As summer approached, many of our parishioners left the area to escape
the heat so, as usual, our attendance during the summer months was low.
Even with so many of our parishioners out of town, St. Thomas hosted a
Cottonwood Chamber Mixer in July. We decorated the Parish Hall with a beach
theme. There was good attendance and everyone had a good time. This was a
wonderful way to get St. Thomas on the city radar and let the public know all
about us.
On a less joyous note, I can sadly say that we had too many funerals in
2018. We had to say our good-byes to many of our longtime friends and
parishioners. I recall one day Priest Grayce announced a moratorium on
funerals. Unfortunately, her pronouncement worked for only a short time.
The next big event in 2018 was the announcement by Bishop Smith that
he would be retiring and so, the search began for his replacement. A few of our
parishioners, as representatives for St. Thomas, along with representatives
from other churches, attended workshops where they we were able to express
what we wanted in a Bishop and our hopes for the future. As a result, three
final Bishop candidates were selected. All parishioners in Northern Arizona
were offered the opportunity to attend a Walk-a-Bout at St. Luke’s in Prescott.
This was an opportunity to interact with and listen to the three candidates as
they answered questions. This helped convention delegates decide on which of
the three they would vote for at the convention. As it turned out, our choice got
the most votes! Welcome Jennifer Reddall, Bishop Elect of Arizona!
The one thing we really didn’t like as we approached the last few months
of 2018 was the car accident and subsequent departure of our beloved Priest
Grayce. We know she needs her time to heal and we understand and respect
her decision. Of course, we all wish Priest Grayce, along with her husband Carl,
the very best of everything but, we will miss her.
Now, there’s a new beginning heading our way. So let’s move forward
with joy and optimism for a New Year! God Bless us ALL!
A BIG THANKS for all the food our congregation has
supplied. Each week, we get packages delivered to the church. As you may know, we are supported by Manzanita Outreach and St.
Mary’s Food Bank. The list that was in our recent Sunday bulletin are needed
items we often give out as extras that these organizations often cannot
supply.
Another thank you goes to the dependable workers we have on each
Food Pantry day. Our St. Thomas workers and friends unload the truck at about
11AM and set up the tables for our clients. We are usually finished with this by
noon. Then at 2PM, we start serving the food items from all our donations. We
News from our Junior Warden and Food Pantry Coordinator, Jim Gemmill
are usually out of food by our 4PM closing time. Volunteers help clean up and
we are gone by about 4:30PM.
When we started in January of this year, we served about 25 families. In
early October, we set a new record of serving 66 families representing about
140 residents. We provide as much as 20 to 40 pounds of food to each family
with the help of the government boxes from St. Mary's. The expressions of
thanks and appreciation from those in need are our reward.
With the exception of December we are open on the 2nd and 4th
Tuesday of each month. However, because Christmas Day falls on the 4th
Tuesday of the month, in December the Food Pantry will be open on the 2nd
and 3rd Tuesdays.
Please feel free to come and witness this program. You may even decide
you'd like to volunteer for this great ministry and of course, you are certainly
welcome to do so.
St. Thomas Episcopal Church, an outward and visible presence of
the inward and spiritual grace of God. St. Thomas exists because of the
contributions of time, of talent, and financial support of those who have given
in the past to make St. Thomas what we are today. In the future, in gratitude to
God, and in good stewardship of all the blessings we have received, we will
continue to give from our own abundance to support the purpose and mission
of St. Thomas; Living in His promise in service to others.
On December 2nd, The First Sunday of Advent, the first day of the
church's liturgical year, 2019 pledge forms received by that time were lifted up
during the offertory as we joined together in singing, Praise God from whom all
blessings flow. Indeed! As we prepare for The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus
Christ, and a new calendar year, may we continue to find our faith nourished
and strengthened in the shared experiences of this church community as we
worship and pray together, as we greet the newcomer and visitor, as we
welcome all at the table, as we open the Food Pantry door to all in need, and
as we show love and respect for the dignity of every human being.

ECW News
from Barbara Evans, ECW Chairperson ECW is so very happy to be helping out the Women’s Sanctuary in our
area. We have specified $300 to be used for them. $100 will be given for
flower bouquets to be displayed on their dining room tables through the
holidays. Also, $100 will be used for sundries such as toothpaste, soaps and
lotions, etc. Then we are throwing in another $100 for new children’s books for
their playroom. We are so blessed to be able to help in this way.
We are looking forward to our next opportunity to help in our community
in January and February.
Twice Blessed Thrift Store News
from Barbara Evans, Store Manager The season of Christmas is happening soon, so we will get out all our
Christmas stock and any other donated items that might come in ready for our
customers.
Come in and browse and you might find something that just hits the spot
for your decorating plans.
Don’t forget to bring in your extra Christmas cards to be used for the
Prison Ministry at Perryville. Bring any cards that have no glitter on them. We
will send them out to all the inmates at Perryville. Merry Christmas!
C.A.R.T. Update from Shirley R. Pogany, C.A.R.T. Co-Chairperson
The St. Thomas C.A.R.T. (Coordinated Assistance Response Team) has
worked hard on providing St. Thomas with some emergency preparedness
guidelines that we hope will ensure the safety of all parishioners and visitors to
our church in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. We presented our
plan to the Bishop’s Committee at their November 2018 meeting and are
currently waiting to see if our plan has been approved.
Coordinated Assistance Response Team
C. A. R. T.
Besides presenting our overall plan, we also presented the Bishop’s
Committee with our proposal for a Safety Sunday. This particular Sunday would
be our chance to present to all of you the guidelines we have prepared. We
have planned this as an informative event, as well as, a fun event so be sure to
stay tuned for more details because you don’t want to miss it!
Well, it’s almost Christmas and I haven’t purchased a single
gift yet. Where shopping is concerned, I usually wait until the last minute. I
really loathe shopping. Mostly it is the standing in line part, waiting to check
out. Yes, that’s the part that bugs me the most. I’m impatient when it comes to
waiting. I am sure my lack of patience is also what fuels my road rage issues on
most days. I like to drive fast, not dangerously fast, just fast, and so I have a
very hard time dealing with someone in front of me going under the speed limit.
I confess, it’s true, I’m the tailgate queen. I’m sorry if you have been a victim of
my tailgating and I apologize in advance to those whom I will tailgate in the
future. I’ve really made a conscience effort on many occasions not to tailgate
but I just keep doing it. It’s like an addiction. Maybe someone should create a
tailgating rehab center.
So, if road rage weren’t enough, it seems I also suffer from check-out
rage while shopping. Shopping is just a full day of waiting and more waiting.
Waiting in traffic and waiting in line, so I put it off until absolutely necessary.
I’m just not the kind of person who can stand in line patiently waiting for my
turn. Please know that I’ve never, ever made a scene or said anything rude to
anyone while waiting in line. This is not to say that I haven’t considered it
because oh yes, I most certainly have. However, and luckily, I do have an
amount of self-control, as well as the proper upbringing that has resulted in my
appropriate behavior in such situations.
Disclaimer: The above statement may not be true when I’m driving alone
in my car. I frequently yell at other drivers but not so they can hear me and I
try very hard to control my behavior if I have passengers in my car. Few have
A note from Shirley R. Pogany,
Parish Administrator
borne witness to my anger in traffic and to them who have, my sincere
apologies.
Shopping is really the only area in my life where I procrastinate. In all
other daily tasks I am not like that at all. I do everything early, before due dates
and deadlines. In general, doing anything at the last minute, (except for
shopping), drives me crazy.
I guess all of us are a bit strange in our own ways. But, nonetheless,
every year we brave the traffic and the crowded stores to buy each other gifts
regardless of our peculiarities. Why do we do this? Because giving is an
expression of our love for one another and that’s what Christmas is really all
about, an expression of love. Merry Christmas!
p.s. My New Year’s resolution, which is the same as last year, is to stop
tailgating and to be more patient in traffic and at the store. Wish me luck! Lord
knows I’m going to need it.

Mushrooms love rain and damp soil and, after an excellent monsoon season this past summer, here they are, growing from a tree stump near the outside wall of the Vicar’s office. These mushrooms might be some type of Bracket Fungi/Shelf Fungus but I’m not certain.
