Dear Coronado Community,
Herb Brooks, 1980 head coach of the gold
medal-winning U.S. Olympic hockey team
at Lake Placid, said, “Great moments are
born from great opportunities.”
Students will rise to meet and even exceed
our expectations if given the opportunity.
We must place our students in situations
that challenge and encourage them to
achieve. High expectations convey
confidence in their abilities and is
necessary to rise above. Positive
competition in all school related activities
such as our athletic teams, performing
arts, visual arts, clubs and classrooms
promote a winning attitude where, more
often than not, students and team
members work together toward a
common goal inspiring motivation,
innovation, respect, empathy,
collaboration and self-efficacy.
Over spring break, a group of our top
concert band, jazz band percussionists and
our chamber orchestra students travelled
to New York City to perform at the world-
renowned Carnegie Hall in Stern
Auditorium where they gave a rousing
performance. Concerts at this phenomenal
venue in front of an audience of their
peers and professional musicians elevate
their level of performance. I wish you
could have experienced it with me.
Unforgettable!
Likewise, a combination of Show and
Chamber choir students travelled to New
York City over spring break to perform at
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the
world’s largest Gothic cathedral. The
acoustics are incredible and after singing
Gregori Allegri’s Miserere Mei, Deus, the
cathedral’s music performance
coordinator remarked that she had not
heard anything that “perfect” since she
worked in Rome. What a compliment!
And, as a matter of fact, she sat for their
ENTIRE performance. The students were
grinning from ear to ear.
At Coronado, we believe how important it
is to perform at the highest level and raise
the bar for all our students and in all our
programs in order to achieve greatness.
The praise they receive and feeling of
accomplishment will prepare them for the
next step in life, working and living toward
their fulfillment. Push yourself and your
children to achieve the next great
moment!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
FOR ALL STUDENTS
Colorado Opportunity Fund The state of Colorado is offering all Colorado
students access to the College Opportunity
Fund (COF). It is basically a reconfiguration as
to how the state funds higher education. The
money that normally went to the institutions
is now being given to the schools in the name
of the students. To take advantage of the
College Opportunity Fund, parents and/or
students must register at the following
website: www.collegeincolorado.org. It is a
very simple process. Once registered, the
college or university will take care of reducing
the tuition for the student once the student
has been accepted to that particular school.
Students may register for the College
Opportunity Fund once they have a Colorado
driver's license or if they have a Colorado I.D.
We strongly recommend students complete
the registration process even if attending a
post-secondary institution is in doubt at this
time. Warning: if a Colorado student is
admitted to a college/university and does not
register for the fund, parents/students may be
held responsible for the payment of that
student’s portion of the COF. Students need
only to register once in their lifetime.
FOR All Males 17 to 18:
Selective Service
Federal law requires all males register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Students can submit their registration information on the Internet at www.sss.gov or by filling out a form that is available at any post office. Selective Service registration is required to be eligible for a federal student loan, job training, most federal jobs, and U.S. Citizenship.

colleges for SAT Subject Test requirements and Fine Arts
credits. Each junior needs to be shopping for those after-
high-school opportunities such as colleges, military,
internships, etc.
COUNSELING SUMMER HOURS
The Coronado counselors will leave for summer break at
the end of the day on May 28, 2019. If students or parents
need to meet with their counselor before the start of
school, you may call Parrish Larkin, counseling secretary,
beginning in August 2019. Ms. Larkin can be reached at
719-328-3609. Andrea Abitia, registrar, can be reached
throughout the summer at 719-328-3615. Post-secondary
counseling assistance for 2019 grads will be provided
through June!
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
Parents, your teens have something of worth that our
community needs and values. Community service is an
important aspect during high school. This can be a
deciding factor when it comes to winning scholarships. It is
a component of being accepted into National Honor
Society. Encourage your student to spend a part of their
summer helping others and investing in themselves. A
variety of summer teen volunteer
opportunities are available through The
Parks and Recreation Department, The
Children’s Literacy Program, the
Humane Society, Marion House, and
local hospitals, just to name a few.
Check out our bulletin board right
outside of the counseling center for
listings of opportunities.
JOBS, INTERNSHIPS,
APPRENTICESHIPS The counseling center has infor-
mation on several different types of
employment, both for summer, and
year-round. Many opportunities are
posted outside the counseling center
or students may see their counselor
for additional information.

COUNSELING
SUMMER SCHOOL INFO There are two options this year for District
Eleven Summer School. The “traditional”
program will be held at Tesla Educational
Opportunity School on the Wasson campus.
This program is for credit recovery only.
Session 1 is May 30-June 10 and Session 2 is
June 11-20, 2019. Only one class per session.
Class hours are from 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
A “digital” program for summer school credit
will also be offered at the Wasson campus
(2115 Afton Way), May 30-June 20, 2019.
Classes are Monday through Friday from 7:30
AM to 12:30 PM. The cost for each class,
traditional or digital, is $165.00, or only
$125.00 per class if you register before May
17. Early registration is encouraged. Students
may pick up information from the counseling
center or on-line at www.d11.org.
A counselor or registrar recommendation is
required for registration, so please complete
this process before the end of the school
year.
COLLEGE CHOICES & FINANCES If you are having trouble deciding between several
colleges, make a list of “PROS & CONS” list for each
college. Compare financial aid awards, making sure you
are comparing “apples to apples.” Make sure the Cost of
Attendance for each
college includes the same
items. Although tuition,
transportation, and room/
board amounts will vary,
other items should be
equivalent (books and
personal expenses).
If loans are offered as part
of your financial aid
packages and all else is
equal, an offer including *subsidized loans (a loan for which
the federal government pays the interest while the student
is in school, and during grace and deferment periods) is
superior to one with *unsubsidized loans (a loan for which
the student is responsible for paying all interest at all times.
Interest accrues on the loan from the date of first
disbursement until the loan is paid in full.) We also suggest
speaking directly to the financial aid officer at the university
of choice.
As soon as you decide and commit to a school, make a
reservation to attend the earliest orientation/registration
session possible for best class selection.
For assistance in filling out the FAFSA and other financial
related questions, visit their website at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

AP EXAMS • ALP • CU GOLD/SUCCEED
AP EXAM INFORMATION Registered students will begin their AP
exams on May 6 with the AP testing
window concluding on May 17. Students
were able to register online this year and
confirmation letters will be distributed to
students the first week of May outlining
date, time and location of exams. Some
exams will be administered at the First
Evangelical Free Church, 820 N. 30th St.,
heading west from Coronado on Fillmore.
Although many of the exams will be
administered at Coronado’s Auxiliary
Gym, Lab 252 and Room 414 (depending
on type of exam). If you have any
questions, you can check the schedule
found on the Coronado webpage under
Quick Links, the May newsletter, contact
Mrs. Schulzki [email protected] or
call at 328-3631. Since this is a national
exam students must attend on the
assigned time and day.
ALP INFORMATION Mrs. Schulzki is currently working on reviewing Advanced Learning Plans
this year based on student input through Naviance as they complete their
ICAP—Individual Career and Academic Plan. All students who completed
their ALP goals online this year can continue the process next year by
refining their goals based on their area of talent, passions and interests.
We suggest academic and affective goals related to student course
selections and future postsecondary pursuits, challenging themselves
along the way.
Next year, we will continue to refine goals through the Naviance system
beginning earlier in the year with class meetings and a chance to meet
with Mrs. Schulzki, Gifted Resource Teacher, as needed. The focus of the
meetings depends on the student and their level in high school.
Freshmen meetings typically center on the transition to high school;
sophomores look at interests in high school and scheduling for junior year
(AP, CU Gold); juniors typically focus on high stakes testing, passions,
interests and academic load as well as the senior year applications for
college and scholarships, and/or next steps. Seniors typically are focused
on graduation, post-secondary pursuits, letters of recommendation, and
getting the most out of their high school experience. Each student is
different, however, and these particular issues and interests are
addressed. Please contact Mrs. Schulzki if you have any questions or
concerns at 328-3631 or [email protected].

CU Gold/CU Succeed Graduating
seniors - Remember to order college
transcripts from the university's website in
order to keep track of credits earned, and
to make sure you have transcripts sent to
the college of your choice (see links
indicated). We continue to keep and
expand our course offerings, based on
interest and registration, through CU Gold/
CU Succeed and will also offer our popular
CU Platinum course, Public Speaking, next
year. This is an after school college course
taught by an instructor from UCCS. Please
look for the full list of courses in the
Summer edition of the school newsletter.
Registration for these courses will occur in
the fall and/or spring of the 2019—2020 school year, depending on the
course. Mrs. Schulzki, CU Gold coordinator, will connect with students at
that time. Students who have taken advantage of this opportunity
appreciate the rigor of the courses and the opportunities provided. In
some cases, students can walk into college with a portion of their
freshman, or even sophomore year completed. If you have any questions

CU PLATINUM & AP TESTING
CU Platinum Course for Fall 2019
Coronado has been asked to be the host site for another college
opportunity. This fall we will again offer, through UCCS, Public
Speaking, COMM 2100. This has been a highly successful and very
popular course not only for Coronado students, but throughout the
district. Students can earn 3 college and 1 high school elective credit,
however, please note, this is not a credit recovery course. With
college level expectations, and taught by Professor Laura Austin-
Eurich, this course will begin in the fall in late August and will meet
Wednesdays until mid December, from 4:30 – 7:00 pm. Students and
parents must sign a tuition contract since the district will be paying
the cost of tuition for this course. Students must earn a C or better
for college transferability.
If your student is interested, please have them stop by my office,
Library Room 228, or send me an email. Students registered for this
course in February, but can still add this course in prior to the start of
the fall semester. Information and registration instructions will be
distributed in August as soon as students return and can be picked up
from Mrs. Schulzki, Rm. 228, north end of the library, or see your
counselor. This is a high demand college course, so take advantage of
the opportunity now! If you have any questions, please contact Ann
Schulzki at [email protected].

FREE On-line Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL) Course for Parents
In a recent statewide survey of
parents of teens, only 6.4 percent
of parents could accurately describe
Graduated Drivers Licensing (GDL)
laws. In response, the Colorado
Teen Driving Alliance developed an
exciting on-line training opportunity
for parents to learn about GDL laws and how to help
teach their teen safe driving habits. The three modules
walk parents through navigating the licensing process,
teaching their teens how to drive, and enforcing safe
driving practices at home by using a parent/teen driving

Help us spread the word for parents to go to
www.COTeenDriver.com and click on the Parent
Graduated Driver's Licensing (GDL) Laws Online Course.
You can use the post-card sized handouts, available in
this manual, to pass out at parent events or to send
home with students. We can look at the number of
parents that have completed the course by their zip code,
so be sure to encourage parents to complete the surveys
found within each module of the course!

ATHLETICS
SPORTS INFORMATION Spring and Summer Athletic information are available on our
web site. We are compiling a list of all off-season activities for
athletics. Most of our team sports and many of our individual
sports offer opportunities for development through the spring and
summer. The month of June is very busy with camps and summer
leagues.
As you plan your summer, consider July as the best time to be on
vacation. Information for spring open gyms and spring league
play, summer tournaments and camps, conditioning days and
times, will all be online this month. Please contact the athletic
office 719-328-3612 with additional questions.
INELIGIBILITY RECOVERY & SUMMER SCHOOL Summer school courses taken after the close of
the second semester may be used to replace any
core units failed. Equivalent courses taken must
be accepted by the school toward graduation.
The equivalent credits must be completed by
August 12, 2019. Credits made up through
summer school must be in the same curricular
area, be accepted to meet graduation
requirements of classes previously failed, and be
recorded on the student’s transcript.
CHECK THE CHSAA CALENDAR FOR UPDATES WHICH MAY OCCUR.
