Issue #001: October - December 2013
Welcome to the first of many newsletters from HBa! It’s
coming to the end of a very busy year for us – here are some
of the things we’ve been up to…
Stoke & Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services
Working with leading construction, services and property group Kier, HBa have been appointed as consulting engineers for
the mechanical and electrical engineering services for the eleven new community fire stations to be built across Staffordshire
over the next couple of years.
These new fire stations constitute the second phase to an innovative project to provide Staffordshire with state-of-the-art fire
stations. Along with the implementation of modern operational facilities, the project also has a community focused
aspiration with the hope to benefit local people, with proposals for the facilities and space to be used for community safety
activities, such as student firefighter courses.
The government’s Private Funding Initiative contributed £45m in funding for phase one
of the scheme, which saw seven stations within Staffordshire replaced, as well as
developing three new stations between October 2009 and September 2011.
Phase two is to see a further ten fire stations rebuilt, as well as a brand new station
at Loggerheads to replace the 45-year-old station at Ashley. Work for the first
station at Chase Terrace is due for completing in summer 2014, with the rest of
the stations following suite over the following two years.
This has been a massive project for HBa; one for which we are particularly eager to see the end results – if you’re ever in
Staffordshire make sure you keep an eye out for one of these stations!

Brooksby Melton College
We’re back at Brooksby Melton College! After previous
work with them carrying out M&E services for their
Animal Care facility, we’ve now been involved in their
brand new teaching and sports facilities developments.
The project involves a multi-million pound new build
development on the Brooksby Campus site, providing
state-of-the-art
education and sports
facilities, as can be seen
by Maber Architects
pictures to the left.
As part of the college’s
£22m programme of
improvements, the new development is set to include a
two-storey general teaching area, a construction and
engineering teaching area, and a sports hall and all-
weather sports pitch.
The College’s planning application was granted on the 1st
December, with the college looking to complete the
building work by September 2015, ready for the start of
term. Lucky
Students!
The project is
part of the
college’s £22m
programme of
improvements,
which includes
plans to modernise facilities at Ashfordby Road, which
HBa has also been involved in.
The project at Ashfordby Road has involved the second
phase of refurbishment to the existing accommodation
located on the Ashfordby Road Campus, for which HBa
has undertaken full design duties.
Glasshouse Development Project: Phase 3
After previously having done work at Glasshouse College, HBa are now involved in the renovation of Yates Yard (GH5) and The Acid House (GH6). This project is funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund and Ruskin Mill Land Trust. Working alongside Bryan Priest Newman as architects and Maze Consultants Ltd as project managers, we are involved in the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Consultancy Services of the project, providing performance specifications and outline concept design drawings, which will be used to seek competitive tenders from D&B Contractors. The project involves the comprehensive refurbishment of both buildings GH5 and GH6. Building GH5 will form the new site reception/visitor information area and speculative commercial/incubator workspace as part of the Ruskin Glass Centre, as seen above. And building GH6 will be dedicated to speculative commercial units and incubator units, as part of the Ruskin Glass Centre, as demonstrated below. Previous work for the Glasshouse College included extensive refurbishment and remodelling that was undertaken on an existing glassmaking factory with the end result being a modern, multi-functional exhibition and theatre space with adjoining teaching studios and craft based workshops. During this project there was a strong emphasis on retaining the existing structure of the glassmaking factory and ensuring the M&E services were discreetly installed to accentuate the character of the building. The end result was a fantastic asset to the college so we’re really excited to be working on the next phase!

Joseph Wright Centre Extension We are very pleased to be working with Derby College
again, this time for the extension of their Joseph Wright
Centre.
Situated in the
heart of Derby
City Centre, the
JWC opened in
2005, named
after the 18th
century painter
Joseph Wright.
The building was
then extended in 2007. And now, due to curriculum
demands, the ever increasing derby college wish to extend the centre even further.
The new extension is set to include a drama department, arts and ceramics studios and a digital studio. In line with the existing
building, plans for the new extension will be of high architectural impact and functionality with a particular emphasis on lots of
space. HBa, working alongside Armsons as project managers, and Maber as architects, are carrying out the mechanical and electrical
engineering services for the project.
The project is due for completion next Christmas – so look out for our newsletter this time next year!
Standard Works Redevelopment
RMLT have purchased, and now wish to refurbish, the Standard Works property, built back in the mid to late 19th century, situated on Vittoria Street in the Conservation Area of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham (just round the corner from our office!) HBa will be undertaking the design of all new mechanical and electrical services installations enabling the building to return to its former self. Hopefully the redevelopment will bring a vacant and derelict building back to life and encourage people and activity within the area!
The purpose of the purchase is to provide a place for educational services, particularly vocational, focussing on life skills for young people with behavioural, social, and learning difficulties. As a grade II listed building, designs for the refurbishment will sustain and enhance the heritage assets of the building, particularly the inherent symmetry of the window formation and traditional masonry construction and curved frontage as can be seen above. It is hoped that the project will be completed December 2014!
South Staffs College
HBa have been given the opportunity to work with South Staffordshire
College in providing Building Consultancy Services for the new Learners
with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities facilities on their Rodbaston
Campus. Over the past few years the campus has gone through
extensive investment, cultivating state-of-the-art learning centre
facilities, equipment and buildings, with this project being the latest
development.
HBa have previously had experience of working on LLDD schemes, most
notably the LLDD provision for Brooksby Melton College at their
Melton Campus, and are really excited to be working on a project like
this again.

Once again, CIBSE has thrown its West Midlands Annual
Dinner, this time held at the ICC in Birmingham. So HBa
dressed up, had a few drinks, and celebrated what has, once
again, been a great year. Great food, lots of wine and some
hilarious comedy made for a brilliant evening. Well done to all
that helped organise the fantastic event!
