COORDINATOR’S REPORT
Term 2 has arrived and with it some cooler and hopefully drier weather conditions. We
needed the rain, but really!! A disappointing side effect of the downpour was the cancellation
of the excursion in Week 7 of Term 1 to Jan Bending’s garden at Krambach. Jan’s beautiful
garden was badly affected by all the rain and she said we would not have enjoyed squelching
through the bog! Hopefully we can have another try for this excursion later in the year.
This term we will also attempt to have an excursion to Port Macquarie for a luncheon cruise on
the Chinese Junk. If you are interested, please read the information in the Newsletter carefully to ensure you know
about departure times and costs.
The Sunday Lunch Club has been a success. It was started this year to allow members and guests to meet for lunch
on one Sunday each month if they are looking for something to do and would like to enjoy good conversation with
friends. If you haven't been before and are interested, you can contact me any time and I will add you to the list.
This social activity does NOT appear on the program.
As usual a huge thank you to those members who help out at sessions - with opening up in the morning that was a
huge challenge before the lock was fixed), catering, moving chairs, making tea, vacuuming the floor, setting up the
media equipment, and everything else. Thank you also to those who are now bringing their own cup/mug for
morning tea - many more people are doing this now, and that is a win for us and that is a win for the environment!
I hope you enjoy the program this Term, Jan Wagstaff Course Coordinator
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Welcome to Term 2! Once again, we’re all grateful to Jan Wagstaff for putting together another interesting program.
Last term we regretfully accepted the resignation of Sue Buls from our committee. Over almost ten years, Sue has served as Newsletter Editor, Vice-President and President and her efforts provide a wonderful role model of unselfish commitment to the U3A cause. Of course, Sue will remain active in other ways within the U3A fold, so we’ll still benefit from her generosity and experience. Our thanks and best wishes go to Sue and Keith.
A reminder that the 2017 AGM of Forster Tuncurry U3A will be held on Welcome Morning, 17th July. Nomination forms will be available at the Surf Club, and can also be downloaded from our website. Completed forms can be returned to any member of the committee before the end of Term 2. Committee roles are well documented these days, and friendly support is always at hand, so all members are encouraged to give consideration to coming on board. I would highlight, especially, the role of Secretary, which has remained unfilled since the last AGM.
I can’t end without saluting the tremendous efforts of presenters, assistants, tech assistants, newsletter proof readers, special treat providers, carpet sweepers, and chair and table monitors. Last but not least, thanks to the committee for your ongoing contributions.
Cheers also to Peter McTiernan and the Cape Hawke Surf Club management team for fixing the front door and thus eliminating the problems associated with the old locking mechanism.
Best wishes for another entertaining and educational term at U3A.
See you soon, David Tyrrell ([email protected])

Notes from the Editor - Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this newsletter-your assistance is
appreciated. Next term I will need more help then usual as I am off to U.S.A. for quite a lot of Term 2. So what I
will need is reports of presentations you have enjoyed, photos from various activities, a book report or two and
whatever other articles you would like to have in the Term 3 Newsletter. My email address is
[email protected] If I get too many articles for Term 3 I can use the excess to start off Term 4. My trip to
North America will include a trip through several National Parks and a visit to Oklahoma City to visit relatives and
also take in the Red Earth Festival; a major North American India dance festival. I also hope to revisit the really
wonderful exhibition of Dale Chihuly Glass that is permanently housed in the Oklahoma City Museum. I look
forward to sharing my experiences with those of you who are interested. I hope you all enjoy Term 2.

COAL SEAM GAS Presentation by Craig Andrews
What an interesting and informative presentation from Craig Andrews who is a local Tuncurry resident and self
confessed ‘Concerned Parent’. This topic had all those who attended talking well after the normal meeting time.
Craig is a retired Geologist and he delivered a comprehensive understanding of the ‘Fracking’ process, the environ-
mental impact and the potential harm to our agricultural land, our waterways, our National Parks, the livelihood and
health of land owners and the destruction of our country and wildlife, not to mention the disposal and clean-up
dilemma that is obviously ignored at Government and Big Company level.
Craig has made available websites for action group, flyers, bumper stickers etc. and we have copies of an excellent
DVD titled ‘A Fractured Country’. If anyone would like a free copy of this DVD for your personal or group use
they are available at U3A. Just ask! Ann Bell

ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 9th March
Much laughter at this morning’s session, where members worked together in teams of 4 people
to complete several challenges. Firstly, they had to build a spaghetti tower from spaghetti and
tape - trouble was, the PVC tape provided didn't stick too well to the spaghetti, so there were a
few protests at first, but they all coped. Tony Bonanno’s team did well, but Janet’s team just
topped their tower by 2 cm!
Then they had to shoot a balloon along a line of string - a win for Ken’s team! The best of all
was Maggie Poole in the Minute-to-Win -It - no-one could match her skill at transferring the
M & Ms with a straw - I think she’d had some practice in a former life! Everyone was rewarded with chocolate,
which was distributed fairly evenly amongst the group. Ladies, I wonder why the men seemed to be better at these
things overall???

FOLK ART, 23rd February
A very enjoyable morning was spent with the group who attended the Folk Art class conducted by Warren Hunt.
Warren provided acrylic paints and special brushes which he had made, and demonstrated the technique of holding
the brush and twisting it to paint “commas”, which we first practised on paper in an attempt at perfection. Then we
used the technique to paint a flower on a coaster (we had a template, some of us were much more accomplished
than others!!) Warren had also purchased some flower pots, trinket boxes, photo frames and plant watering bottles,
which we could take home and decorate.
The artists among us showed their talents,
and everyone was able to complete the tasks
with reasonable success due to Warren’s
excellent teaching methods!
Thank you, Warren.

WORLD CINEMA - Tuesday 28th March
The first session of World Cinema was held on Tuesday morning 28th March, when we were treated to the wonderful
French film, “The Intouchables”. Sue Felix introduced us to the delights of foreign films which have achieved
success in their home country, rather than only those which have gained worldwide, mainstream popularity.
“The Intouchables” was a runaway success in France, a true story, which was laugh-out-loud funny, yet poignant and
thought-provoking as well.
Everyone was so engrossed they were shocked and disappointed to stop for morning tea - even though it was French
-inspired choc-chip brioche and sablés, which were delicious!
All said they had a wonderful morning, and we are excited to see what next term’s film brings !
Thank you very much, Sue!

HISTORY
We had a very interesting presentation from both Larry and Priscilla Ruffell on Oliver Cromwell and his wife Elizabeth and their family. Under instructions from Priscilla members of the History Group became family members and introduced themselves. Sue Wiblin presented as Mary Cromwell. Sue is seen here wearing a hand crocheted cap which is well over a hundred years old and a family heirloom.
Larry presented several short DVDs on the life and times of Oliver Cromwell a man of many parts but very much a family man.
FIRST TERM LUNCH
Members had a very enjoyable get together at The Point Tavern, Hallidays Point. If you haven’t been there yourself
it was a very nice meal for a reasonable price. Great company as always. Thanks, Jan, for looking after us again.

I Am Not Old Enough
I was reading the Advocate in 1994 when I noticed a most interesting article about an Adult Learning group called
The University of the Third Age. I knew from my Shakespeare that the third age was the age of retirement but I
had not heard about this group. Reading on I was excited to discover they would be having classes for adults on
many subjects and the group was to start in Forster. Then I was so disappointed, you have to be 55 years old and I
was only 48.
So I put the paper down and got on with my life, but in the back of my mind I remembered the article and when I
made a new friend in 1996 the idea came back. This new friend, a quilter I met at the Craft Centre, named Noëlle,
talked at length about the U3A and I asked if I could join. Needing information, her reply was she would get back
to me. A few weeks later we met and again I was disappointed to find that I was not old enough.
So life went on and I filled my days with crafts, mostly fibre arts like quilting and sewing, but learning the
computer helped to fill in the time till I got older. Then in January 2001 when I was 54 and a 1/2 I met Noëlle
again and she said I could join now as the insurance cover they had was for over 50’s. Digging in her bag she
pulled out an enrolment form and I filled it in with great excitement. I was told the President would contact me and
a newsletter would follow.
The newsletter came and on the enclosed enrolment form I noted a little box at the bottom which asked if I would
like to be a Tutor in the future. The thought came instantly to my mind that there was nothing I could teach people
they didn’t already know. How wrong I was.
At my first talk on the Middle Ages I suggested a subject for the future and Judy Crewe said I could do it in the
fourth term. Well, that was the start of my learning many wonderful things about the world and the enjoyment of
sharing this knowledge with members of U3A. I now do a talk every term and sometimes two and I find that
research is what I like most. Isn’t it wonderful to be too young for something!
Chris Butler 2008
To celebrate Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday the History Group looked at the history of Carnivale and Mardi
Gras by making their own very attractive masks. Great work members! Thanks for the pancakes (Pickets) as well.
Thank you to all those generous members who supply delicious home made goodies for us to eat. You
are usually anonymous but your generosity is not taken for granted. We all thank you very much.

An Enjoyable Day Out
Several members of the History Group had a very enjoyable day in Port Macquarie on the last Wednesday of the term. The day covered three different venues - The first venue was the very interesting Port Macquarie Museum in Clarence Street. The museum is housed in a building built between 1835 and 1840 and was originally a shop with an upstairs residence. There were many things of interest to everyone, amongst these were a collection of convict bricks, china, well preserved costumes, covering not only the well-to-do but workers, and a wonderful collection of babies clothes upstairs along with a dining room, bedroom and a serious collection of beautiful china.
Our Second Venue was the very surprising Roto House and Garden. Members had lunch in the beautiful grounds before having a guided tour of the House. The house is now the property of NSW Parks and Wildlife and is very well kept. John Flynn had the house built in 1890 and the family lived there up to the late 1970s after which the Government bought the property and eventually had the house beautifully restored.
The third venue was a wonderful surprise for those of us who didn’t realize it was there. The Koala Hospital was a special place to see. The injured Koalas where on show, including one which had been burnt in the recent fires.
