New Era TheRobertMorriswomen’shockeyprogrambegananewerathisseasonasfirst-yearheadcoachPaulColontinoisbehindtheColonialbenchafterbeinghiredtothepositionthispastsummer.Colontino,whohadservedasassociateheadcoachatMercyhurstsince2006,helpedguideteamstotheNCAATournamentineachofthepastfiveyears,includingearningtwoFrozenFourberths,andhasoveradecadeofwomen’shockeycoachingexperienceattheDivisionIlevel.ForfurtherdetailsonColontino’sbackgroundandhistory,pleasegotopage9. WhileColontinoleadsthestaff,healsobroughtontwoadditionalnewcomerstohelpcoachtheColonialsthispastoffseason.HehiredAllisonRutledgeasanassistantcoachandaddedformerColonialBrianneMcLaughlinasavolunteerassistantcoach. Rutledge,whopreviouslyservedasanassistantcoachatWayneStatesince2007,hasearnednationalrecognitionanddemonstratedsuccessasbothaDivisionIplayerandcoachandalsoboastseightyearsofexperienceinCHAcompetition.InherfirstseasonatWayneState,RutledgeandherfellowWarriorcoacheswerenamedtheNationalCoachingStaffoftheYearbytheAmericanHockeyCoachesAssociation(AHCA)afterfinishingtheseasonwiththefirstnationalrankinginprogramhistoryandsecuringaschool-record22wins.RutledgehelpedWayneStatetoashareofitsfirstCHAregular-seasonchampionshipalongwithbreakingtheschoolrecordsforlongestwinningstreak(ninegames)andlongestunbeatenstreak(11games).RutledgehadastrongpedigreeforworkingwithWayneState’sgoaliesasshewasanAll-AmericangoaltenderduringherplayingdaysatNiagara.Shestarted110gamesinhercollegiatecareerandranksthirdall-timeinNCAAhistorywith3,405saves. McLaughlinhadastoriedcollegiatecareerforRobertMorrisbeforecompetingforhercountryinbothOlympicandWorldChampionshipevents.In120careergamesforRobertMorris,McLaughlinstoppedaNCAA-record3,809shots,afigurethatismorethan200clearoftheclosestnetmind-er.McLaughlinwasafour-timeAll-CollegeHockeyAmericaawardwinnerandalsoearnednationaldefensiveplayeroftheweekhonorsonthreeoccasionsinhercareer.Lessthanoneyearaftershecompletedhercollegiatecareer,McLaughlintraveledtoVancouver,BritishColumbiaforthe2010OlympicGamesasamemberoftheU.S.NationalTeam.Sheappearedintheteam’sfirstgameofthetournament,becomingthefirstColonialstudent-athletetocompeteintheOlympics,andwentontohelptheU.S.earnasilvermedal.

No Mercy SophomoreTheaImbrognoscoredwithjust53secondsremaininginregulationtocapafuriouscomebackasRobertMorrisstunnedNo.4/5Mer-cyhurstwithapairofgoalsinthefinalthreeminutestoclaimathrilling,3-2,roadvictoryJan.21,endingtheLakers’28-gameconferenceunbeatenstreak.RMUled1-0formuchofthegamebeforebothteamsprovidedaflurryofscoringactioninthethirdperiod.Mercyhurstscoredapairofgoalswithintheopeningeightminutesofthefinalframe,anditlookedasthoughtheLakerswouldonceagaintoptheColonials.However,RobertMorrisevenedtheproceedingswithagoaloffthestickofdefensemanJamieJoslinwithjust2:38toplay,whichsetupImbrogno’sheroics.Asaresult,itmarkedonlythesecondtimeinschoolhistoryinwhichtheColonialswonagameinwhichtheytrailedwith10minutesremaininginregulation.ThevictoryfortheColonialswassignificantforalitanyofreasons,includingthefactthattheir13thtriumphof2011-12brokeRMU’spreviousprogramrecordforwinsinaseason.Inhisfirstseasonatthehelm,headcoachPaulColontino,aformermemberoftheLakers’staff,ledRobertMorristoitsfirst-evervictoryovernationalpowerhouseMercyhurstintheprogram’syounghistory.TheLakersenteredtheactiontiedforthelongestunbeatenstreaknationallyastheyhadnotlostsinceDec.9,butRMUmanagedtolimitthenation’sbestthird-bestoffenseenroutetothevictory.RobertMorrisheldMercyhursttojusttwoscoreseventhoughtheLakersbeganthedayaveragingmorethan5.1goalspergame.RobertMorrissuccessfullykilledoffallsevenMercyhurstpowerplaysinthecontest,afeatmademorenoteworthysincetheLakersboastthenation’stopman-advantageunit,convertingonnearly30percentoftheirchances.TheColonialsalsoheldLakerseniorBaileyBramwithoutasinglepointeventhoughsheenteredtheweekendleadingthenationwithover2.5pointspergame.

Rewriting the Record Book FreshmanRebeccaVinthasbeenbusyrewritingtheColonials’recordbookandbrokethreemajorRMUsingle-seasonrecordswithinthemonthofFebruary.InaFeb.3victoryatSyracuse,shetalliedthegame-winninggoaltobreaktheColonials’single-seasonrecordforpoints.ThenonthesecondweekendofthemonthagainstNiagara,VintbrokeRobertMorris’single-seasongoalsandassistsrecords.Her12thmulti-pointgameoftheseasoncameFeb.12,whichallowedhertobecomethefirstColonialtonotcha40-pointseason.Vintbeganhercareerwithabangasshescoredineachofherfirstsixgames,thefirsttimeanyColonialhadeverscoredinsixconsecutivecontests.Shehasalreadyhada12-gamepointstreak,thelongestinRMUhistory,andcurrentlyranksfourthnationallyinppgamongrookies(1.40).

National Notice Justthreedaysaftertyingtheprogramrecordforwins,RobertMorrisearnedvotesintheUSCHOnationalrankingsJan.9.ItmarkedthefirsttimesinceNovember2009thatRMUclaimedvotesintheweeklyUSCHOpoll,whichisalmostexclusivelyvoteduponbyheadcoachesacrossthecountry.RobertMor-riswasoneoffiveschoolstoearnmentioninthe‘othersreceivingvotes’category.ItisnotsurprisingtoseetheColonialsrankedamongthenation’seliteastheyrankamongthetop10nationallyinscoringdefense,scoringmarginandpower-playsuccessrate.

Impressive Imbrogno Is Reigning Rookie of the Year Afterarecord-settingfreshmancampaign,TheaImbrognobecamethefirststudent-athleteinprogramhistorytowinamajorpostseasonleagueawardastheconferencenamedImbrognotheCHARookieoftheYearatitsannualbanquetlastMarch. TherookierecognitionwasfarfromtheonlyhonorImbrognoreceivedasshewasalsotheonlyfreshmantoearn2011all-conferencehonorsasshewasselectedtotheAll-CHASecondTeam.Shebecamejustthesecondfreshmanintheprogram’ssix-yearhistorytobechosentoanall-leagueteam,joiningformerColonialstandoutandUnitedStatesOlympianBrianneMcLaughlin.Imbrogno’sselectionmarkstheseventhoverallAll-CHAaward(FirstorSecondTeam)foraColonialastheyoungRMUprogramhasproducedatleastoneall-conferencehonoreeineveryseasonofitsexistence. Imbrogno’sseasonwasmadeevenmoreimpressivebyherabilitytoproduceatthebiggestmomentsandinthemostimportantgames.Sheposted11pointsinRMU’s11gamesagainstnationally-rankedopponentsandalsoraisedherplayduringCHAcompetition.Sheelevatedherperformanceagainstleaguefoesasshepostedteam-leadingmarksof10goals,10assists,20pointsand72shotsinconferenceplay. Imbrognoprovidedthreegame-tyinggoalsontheseasonaswasakeyfigureinmultipleColonialcomebacksinFebruary’sclosingstretch.Sheassistedonthegoalthatbegantherallyandthenputhomethegame-tyingscoreherselfallduringthefinal10minutesofregulationFeb.5againstNiagarabeforescoringbothColonialgoals,includingthegame-tyingoneinthethirdperiod,tohelpRMUfightbackandtieSyracuseFeb.19.TheseperformanceshelpedImbrognonotchamulti-pointgameinfourofthefinalsixcontestsoftheregularseason.

Block Party InRMU’s6-1victoryoverNiagaraFeb.10,theColonialscontinuedtodemonstrateanimpressiveabilitytoblockshots.RMUblocked25PurpleEagleshotattempts,andtheColo-nialshavenowblockedatleast20shots14timesintheirpast28outings.Thisyear’ssquadisblockinganaverageof18.3shotspergame,whichwouldbethehighestmarkinschoolhistory.Asacomparison,RMU’sopponentsareonlyblockinganaverageof13.63shotspercontest.KathrynStackleadstheteamwith60blockedshots,JamieJoslinisnextwith59,PaigePietrangelofollowswith42andKylieSt.Louishas38.

Offense from the Defense JuniorJamieJoslinjoinedRebeccaVintintoppingprogramgoalsrecordsFeb.10againstNiagara.Hersecond-periodtallywasthe11thofhercareer,whichmadeherthehighest-scoringdefensemeninColonialhistory.Joslinaddedanassisttorecordherthirdmulti-pointgameoftheseasonandfirsteverinconferenceplay.Joslinfinishedthenightwith15pointsin2011-12,leavingherjustonepointshyoftyingtyingMalloryGiambra’ssingle-seasonrecordforpointsbyadefenseman.

Eleventh Heaven InRobertMorris’5-2victoryFeb.4atSyracuse,11distinctColonialstalliedatleastonepoint.Itmarkedthefirsttimethat11ormoreColonialshadatleastonepointagainstacur-rentCHAopponentandthefirsttimeaRobertMorrissquadachievedthisfeatontheroadsince2008.RMUalsodemonstratedbalanceinitsgoal-scoring--despitenettingfourgoalsFridayandanotherfiveonSaturday,noColonialhadamulti-goalgameineithercontest.

Special ‘Special Teams’ Withasecond-periodpowerplaygoalina4-3winFeb.3,RobertMorrisbrokeitssingle-seasonrecordforman-advantagegoalswithits30thofthecampaign.TheColonialshavebeendangerousonthePPthisseasonandrankamongthetop10nationallyinconversion%(37-170).

Killer Penalty Kill RobertMorriswasoftenplayingshorthandedinitslastmeetingwithNiagaraasitwasforcedtofaceeightPurpleEaglepowerplays.However,theColonialsrespondedadmirablyandwentaperfect8-for-8onthenight.Fortheweekend,RMUalsowasforcedtokilloffacombined3:28ofman-advantagetimeinwhichitwasdowntwoskaters.ThateffortcontinuedathemeforRMUasithaskilledoffall20powerplaysithasfacedagainstthePurpleEaglesthisseason.Infact,theColonialshavekilledoffaleague-leading88.6%ofoppositionpowerplayswithinconferenceplayoveralland,atonepoint,wentthreeconsecutivegameswithoutallowingasingleman-advantagescore.RobertMorrishasprovedevenbetterrecentlyastheColonialshavekilledoff46oftheirlast50oppositionpowerplayssinceJan.20.

Hockey Families CaptainPaigePietrangelo’sfather,FrankPietrangelo,wasasagoalieforthePittsburghPenguinsfrom1987-1992.HeisrememberedinPittsburghforhisclutchperformanceinthe1991StanleyCupPlayoffs.InthesixthgameofthefirstroundagainsttheNewJerseyDevilswiththePenguinsfacingelimination,Pietrangelofacedaone-on-onewithfutureHall-of-FamerPeterStastny.Pietrangelomadearemarkableglovesave,whichisknowntothisdayinPenguinhockeyhistoryas“TheSave”.ThePenguinsendedupwinningGameSix,4-3,toforceaseventhgameinwhichPietrangeloearnedashutoutwin.ThePenguinswentontowintheStanleyCupthatseasonwithPietrangeloearningthewininGameFiveofthefinals. Colontino,whohadservedasassociateheadcoachatMercyhurstsince2006,helpedguideteamstotheNCAATournamentineachofthepastfiveyears,includingearningtwoFrozenFourberths,andhasoveradecadeofwomen’shockeycoachingexperienceattheDivisionIlevel. InColontino’sfiveseasonswithMercyhurst,theLakershavepostedanoverallrecordof148-25-9(.838),advancedtothenationalchampionshipgameonce,made
