    Dont use phone at a refuelling point.Dont use near fuel or chemicals.

    MAKING CALLS

    Ensure the phone is switched on andin service. Enter the phone number,

    including the area code, then press. To end a call press . Toanswer a call press .

    EMERGENCY CALLS

    Ensure the phone is switched on andin service. Press as many timesas needed (e.g. to exit a call, to exit amenu, etc.) to clear the display. Enterthe emergency number, then press

    General information

    This chapter gives you some generalinformation on your new Nokia phone andthis owner guide.

    Stickers in the sales packageThe stickers contain important informationfor service and customer support purposes.

    Security code

    The security code 12345 is supplied withyour phone. To avoid unauthorised use ofyour phone, change the code in the Settingsmenu, see Security level (Menu 4-6-5) onpage 38 and Change of access codes (Menu4-6-6) on page 38. Keep the new codesecret and in a safe place separate from yourphone.

    Network servicesThe wireless phone described in this user

    guide is approved for use on the GSM900and GSM1800 networks.

    Note that Dual band functionality is anetwork-dependent feature. Check with yourlocal service provider if you can subscribe toand use the dual band functionality.

    A number of features included in this users

    guide are called network services. They arespecial services provided by wireless serviceproviders. Before you can take advantage ofany of these network services, you mustsubscribe to these service(s) from your homeservice provider and obtain instructions fortheir use.

    AccessoriesThe following manufacturer-approvedrechargeable batteries are available for yourphone: Li-Ion batteries BLS-2N and BLS-4,NiMH battery BMS-2S and Li-Polymerbattery BPS-1.

    This apparatus is intended for use whensupplied with power from ACP-7, ACP-8ACP-9 and LCH-9 battery chargers. Otherusage will invalidate any approval given tothis apparatus and may be dangerous.

    Warning! Use only batteries,chargers and accessories approvedby the phone manufacturer for usewith this particular phone model.The use of any other types willinvalidate any approval or warrantyapplying to the phone, and may bedangerous.

    When you disconnect the powercord of any accessory, grasp andpull the plug, not the cord.

    1. Your phone

    The phone is equipped with the keys given below.

    Power key: Switches the phone on or off.Pressing this key briefly while in the standbymode or during a call will result in the list ofprofiles being displayed. Pressing the power keybriefly while in the phone book or menu functionswill turn the phones display light on for 15seconds.

    Selection keys: Each of these keys performs thefunction indicated by the text shown on the dis-

    play immediately above it, e.g.Select orOK.

    Scroll keys: Use these keys to scroll throughnames, phone numbers, menus or setting options.

    Dials a phone number and answers a call. Whenin the standby mode: shows the most recentlydialled number.

    Ends or rejects a call. Also exits from any functionat any time.

    The display indicatorsDisplay indicators and icons inform youabout the operation of your phone.

    Standby mode

    The indicators described below are shownwhen the phone is ready for use, with nocharacters entered by the user. This screen iscalled standby mode.

    xxxxxxx Indicates in which cellular networkthe phone is currently used.

    Shows the signal strength of thecellular network at your currentlocation. The higher the bar, thestronger the signal.

    Shows the battery charge level. Thehigher the bar, the more power inthe battery.

    List of essential indicators in thestandby mode

    In addition to the above three indicators, oneor more of the following icons may be shownwhen the phone is in the standby mode:

    Indicates that you have receivedone or several text or picturemessages. See Messages (Menu 1)on page 24.

    Indicates that you have receivedone or several voice messages. SeeMessages (Menu 1) on page 24.

    Indicates that the phone doesntring at an incoming call. SeeProfiles (Menu 3) on page 32.

    Indicates that the phones keypadis locked. See Keypad lock(Keyguard) on page 8.

    Indicates that you have set thealarm clock toOn or that you haveset an alarm for a calendar note.

    Indicates that all your calls arediverted. See Call divert (Menu 5)on page 38.

    Indicates that your calls are limitedto a closed user group (networkservice). See Closed user group(Menu 4-6-4) on page 37.

    The selection keys

    Below the display you will find the twoselection keys:

    The function of these keys depends on theguiding texts shown above the keys. Forexample, when the textMenu appears

    above the key, pressing this key entersthe menu functions.

    Similarly, pressing the key under the textNames allows access to the phone bookfunctions. Pressing and holdingNamesactivates voice dialling.

    In this owner guide, the selection keys areindicated by the relevant guiding text in boldtype.

    Keypad lock (Keyguard)This feature locks the keypad to prevent thekeys being accidentally pressed (for examplewhen your phone is in your pocket or in yourpurse).

    To lock the keypad:

    When in the standby mode, pressMenu andthen within two seconds.

    When the keypad is locked, appears atthe top of the display.

    To unlock the keypad:

    PressUnlock and then .

    When the keyguard is on:To answer a call, press . To end or rejecta call, press . During a call, the phonecan be operated in the normal way.

    Note: When Keyguard is on, callsmay be possible to the emergencynumber programmed into yourphone (e.g. 112 or other officialemergency number).

    Key in the emergency number andpress . The number is displayedonly after you have keyed in its lastdigit.

    2. Getting started

    Installing the SIM card Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the

    reach of small children.

    The SIM card and its contacts can easilybe damaged by scratches or bending, sobe careful when handling, inserting orremoving the card.

    Before installing the SIM card, alwaysmake sure that the phone is switched offand then remove the battery.

    1. With the back of the phone facing you,

    press the release button (1.). Slide thebattery off the phone (2.).

    2. Release the SIM card holder by sliding it

    to the right.

    3. Insert the SIM card ensuring that thebevelled corner is on the bottom right and

    the golden contact area is facingdownwards.

    4. Slide the card holder to the left to lockthe card in its place.

    5. Place the battery on the back of thephone and slide it up the body of thephone until it locks into place.

    Charging the battery

    1. Attach the lead from the charger to thesocket on the bottom of your phone.

    2. Connect the charger to an ACwall outlet. The batteryindicator bar starts to scroll.

    The textCharging is displayedbriefly if the phone is switchedon. You can use the phonewhile charging.

    If the battery is totally flat, it may take afew minutes before the chargingindication appears on the display or anycalls can be made.

    The charging time depends on thecharger and battery used. For example,

    charging a BLS-2 battery takes about 4hours.

    3. The battery is fully charged when thebattery indicator bar stops scrolling, andthe textBattery fullis briefly displayed (ifthe phone is on).

    4. Disconnect the charger first from the ACoutlet and then from the phone.

    If the textNot charging is displayed,charging has been suspended. Wait for awhile, disconnect the charger, plug it inagain and retry. If charging still fails, contactyour dealer.

    Switching the phone on

    and off

    Press and hold the key for a second.

    If the phone requests a PIN code:

    The PIN code is usually supplied with the SIMcard.

    Key in the PIN code (displayed as ****), andpressOK.

    If the phone requests a securitycode:

    Key in the security code (displayed as*****), and pressOK.

    See also Access codes on page 50.

    Warning! Do not switch on thephone when wireless phone use

    is prohibited or when it maycause interference or danger.

    Note:Your phone has a built-in antenna. Aswith any other radio-transmitting device, donot touch the antenna unnecessarily whenthe phone is switched on. Contact with theantenna affects call quality and may causethe phone to operate at a higher power levelthan otherwise needed. Not touching the

    antenna during a call optimizes the antennaperformance and the talk-time of yourphone.

    Making and answering calls

    Making calls

    1. Key in the phone number including thearea code.

    To edit a number on the display, pressto move the cursor to the right and tomove it to the left. PressClear to deletethe character to the left of the cursor.

    2. Press to call the number.

    3. Press to end the call (or to cancel

    the call attempt).Normal position: Hold the phone as youwould hold any other telephone.

    Note: When you are using the phone withthe car kit CARK-91, you can switch fromhandsfree mode to privacy mode by pickingup the external handset HSU-1. To switchback to handsfree, first pressOptions andthen put down the handset within 5 seconds.

    International calls1. Press twice for the international

    prefix (the + character replaces theinternational access code).

    2. Enter the country code, the area codewithout 0 and the phone number.

    3. To call the number, press .

    Making a call using the phone book1. PressNames.

    2. PressSelectwhen Search is highlighted.

    3. Key in the first letter of the name andpressSearch.

    4. Use and to reach the desiredname.

    5. Press .

    Last number redialThe last ten phone numbers you called orattempted to call are stored in the phones

    memory. To redial one of these last-diallednumbers:

    1. When in the standby mode, pressonce to access the list of the last-diallednumbers.

    2. Use or to reach the desired numberor name.

    Calling your voice mailbox

    1. Press and hold when in the standbymode.

    2. If the phone asks for the voice mailboxnumber, key it in and press OK. Youobtain this number from your serviceprovider. To edit this number at a latertime, see Voice mailbox number (Menu4-5-3) on page 36.

    Speed dialling a phone number

    If you have assigned a phone number to oneof the speed dialling keys ( to ), youcan call that phone number in either of thefollowing ways:

    Press the corresponding speed diallingkey and press .

    If theSpeed dialling function is set toOn:Press and hold the corresponding speeddialling key ( to ) until the call

    is started.

    Answering a call

    1. To answer the call, press .

    In-call optionsYour phone provides a number of functionsthat you can use during a call. Many of the

    in-call options are network services.By pressingOptions during a call some or allof the following in-call options may beavailable:

    Call waiting

    This network service allows you to answer anincoming call while you have a call inprogress if you have activated the menufunctionCall waiting service (Menu 4-3-4).

    1. PressAnswer or . The first call is puton hold.

    2. To switch between the two calls, pressSwap or .

    3. To end the active call, press , (or toend both calls at the same time, pressOptions, scroll toEnd all callsand pressOK.)

    Tip: If you do not want to answer

    the call, you can ignore it orreject it. To reject the call, pressOptions, then scroll toRejectand press OK. If you haveactivated the call divertDivert ifbusy(Menu 5-2), a rejected callwill also be diverted.

    Call holding

    This network service allows you to makeanother call while you have a call inprogress.

    1. PressHold. The first call is put on hold.

    2. Make the second call.

    3. To switch between the two calls, pressSwap or .

    To end the active call, press .

    Tip: You can also mute the linefor a while. PressOptions, scrollwith or toMute. Whenyou want to resume the mutedcall, pressUnmute.

    Making a conference call

    This network service allows up to six personsto take part in a conference call.

    1. Make a call to the first participant.

    2. PressOptions and scroll to New calland

    pressSelect. Make the call to the secondparticipant. The first call is put on hold.

    3. To join the first participant in theconference call, pressOptions, chooseConferenceand pressSelect.

    4. To add a new person to the call, repeatsteps 2 and 3.

    5. To have a private conversation with oneof the participants:

    PressOptions, scroll toPrivateandpressSelect, then scroll to the desiredparticipant and pressOK. Once youhave finished the privateconversation, return to the conferencecall as described in step 3.

    6. To end the conference call, press .

    Transferring a call

    When you have one call active and one onhold, this network service allows you toconnect the two calls and to disconnectyourself from both calls.

    4. Phone book (Names)

    About the phone bookYou can store names and phone numbers inthe phones internal phone book or in thememory of the SIM card. You can only useone memory at a time. For storing names andphone numbers, see Storing names andnumbers on page 15.

    The phones internal phone book canstore 500 names with 3 numbers and onetextual note per name. However, if youhave less than 500 names stored in thephone's internal phone book, you may be

    able to store up to 5 numbers and twotextual notes per name. Storing multiplenumbers and text items per name onpage 16.

    The phone supports SIM cards that canstore up to 250 names and phonenumbers.

    Entering a phone book function

    When in the standby mode: PressNames,scroll with or to the desiredfunction and pressSelect.

    During a call: PressOptions, scroll withor to Phone book, and press

    Select. Scroll to the desired function andpress Select.

    Tip: To quickly access the list ofstored names and numbers, press

    or when the phone is inthe standby mode.

    The header line on top of the display helpsyou to locate where you are in the phonebook.

    Selecting the phone book

    You can set the phone to use its internalphone book or the memory of the SIM cardfor storing names and numbers.

    Note: If you want to store multiple numbersand text items per name or attach voice tagsto numbers, you must set the phone to useits internal phone book. If you have thenumbers stored in the SIM card, first copythem to the phone. See Copying phonebooks on page 14.

    1. When in the standby mode, pressNames.

    2. Scroll with or to OptionsandpressSelect.

    3. PressSelectwhen Memory in useisdisplayed.

    4. Scroll toPhone(to set the phone to useits internal phone book) orSIM card(toset the phone to use the memory of theSIM card) and pressSelect.

    Note: After the SIM card is changed, the SIMphone book is automatically selected.

    Copying phone books

    You can copy names and phone number fromthe phones memory to your SIM cardsmemory or vice versa.

    Storing names and numbers

    Note: All characters available under anumber key are not printed on the key.The characters available under a numberkey depend on the language selected inthe menu 4-4-1.

    Tip: When entering names in thephone book, the phone uses titlecase, which automatically writesthe first character of a name in

    upper case and the rest of theword in lower case.

    3. PressOK.

    4. Key in an area code and phone number,and pressOK. If you wish to add a voicetag, see Adding a voice tag to a phonenumber on page 18.

    Writing text: If the next letter is located on the same

    key as the present one, press or(or wait until the cursor appears again)and then key in the letter.

    To switch between upper case and lower

    case, press quickly. The symbol ABCor abc shown at the top of the displayindicates the selected case.

    To insert a number, press and hold the keylabelled with the desired number. Numbermode is indicated by 123 at the top ofthe display. To switch between letters andnumbers, press and hold .

    Pressing brings up a list of specialcharacters. Move through the list to thedesired character with or andpressSelect to insert it in the name.

    If the character list continues on toanother screen, you can scroll betweenthe screens by pressing .

    If you make a mistake, you can removecharacters to the left of the cursor bypressingClear as many times asnecessary. Pressing and holdingClearwill

    clear the screen. and move the cursor right and

    left, respectively.

    Tip: If you key in the + characterfor the international prefix (press

    twice) in front of thecountry code, you will be able touse the same phone number whenyou are calling from abroad.

    Quick save:When in the standby mode, key inthe phone number, pressOptions,and selectSave. Then, enter thename and pressOK.

    Setting the type of view for storednames and numbersYou can set your phone to show the storednames and numbers in two different ways.

    1. PressNames, scroll with or toOptionsand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll toType of viewand pressSelect.

    3. Scroll toName list(shows three names ata time) orName & number(shows onename and phone number at a time) andpressOK.

    Storing multiple numbers and textitems per name

    You can use your phone as a contactmanager, since the phones internal phonebook allows you to store multiple phonenumbers as well as text, such as an E-mailaddress, a street address or a note under aname. You can store up to 2 text items pername.

    The first number stored under a name isautomatically set as the default number.When you select a name from the phonebook, e.g. to make a call or to send amessage, the default number is used unlessyou select another number. You can store upto 5 numbers per name.

    For each number or text item you can selecta number type. If you do not select anynumber type, will be used as the numbertype. The default number is indicated by thebox around the number type icon, e.g. .

    Adding a new number or text item toa name:Multiple numbers can be stored only in thephones memory.

    Note: Before storing names and numbers,change the memory in use fromSIM cardtoPhone. For instructions, see Selecting thephone book on page 14.

    1. Enter the names list, for example, bypressing or .

    2. Scroll with or to the name towhich you want to add a new number ortext item and pressDetails.

    3. PressOptions and scroll toAdd numberor to Add textand pressSelect.

    4. Scroll to one of the number or text typesand pressSelect.

    Searching and calling from thephone book

    1. In the standby mode, pressNames.

    3. Key in the first character of the name (or

    pressList to access the list of names) youare searching for and pressSearch. Thepop-up window appears.

    4. Scroll with or to the desiredname, or enter more search criteria in thepop-up window and then scroll to thedesired name.

    5. Once the desired name is highlighted,pressOptions, scroll toView detailsto

    view the details of the highlighted name,or press to call the highlightedname.

    Tip: To quickly find a name andphone number, press or(when in the standby mode), keyin the first letter(s) of the name,then scroll with or to thedesired name.

    Calling service numbersUsing this function you can easily call any ofthe service numbers your service providermay have stored in your SIM card. Thisfunction is not displayed if there are noservice numbers stored in your SIM card.

    1. In the standby mode, pressNames.

    2. Scroll with or toService Nos. andpressSelect.

    3. Scroll to the desired service number, andpress to call the number.

    Voice dialling feature

    The voice dialling feature allows you to makephone calls by saying a voice tag that hasbeen added to a desired phone number. Anyspoken word(s) such as a persons first name,surname and type of number (e.g.Mobile)

    can be a voice tag.

    Before using voice dialling, note that:

    Voice tags can be stored only in thephones memory. Save or copy the phonenumbers, to which you want to add avoice tag, in your phones memory.

    When recording a voice tag or making acall by saying a voice tag, hold the phone

    in the normal position near to your ear. Voice tags are not language dependent.

    They are dependent on the speakersvoice.

    Voice tags are sensitive to thebackground noise; record voice tags in aquiet environment.

    Very short names are not accepted; uselong names and avoid similar names for

    different numbers.Note: The phone must be in a service areawith adequate cellular signal strength.Also, you must say the name exactly asyou said it when you recorded it. This maybe difficult in, for example, a noisyenvironment or during an emergency, soyou should not rely solely upon voicedialling in all circumstances.

    Adding a voice tag to a phone numberVoice tags can only be added to the phonenumbers stored in the phones memory. First,change the memory in use fromSIM cardtoPhone, see Selecting the phone book onpage 14for instructions. Then, save a name

    and number(s) in the phones memory, seeStoring names and numbers on page 15and Storing multiple numbers and textitems per name on page 16for instructions.

    1. Enter the names list, for example, bypressing or .

    2. Scroll with or to the name towhich you want to add a voice tag andpressDetails.

    3. Use the scroll keys or to select thenumber to which you want to add a voicetag.

    4. PressOptions and scroll with ortoAdd voice tag and pressSelect.

    5. Press Startwhen the textPress Start,then speak aftertone is displayed: thephone sounds a starting tone andPleasespeak nowis displayed.

    6. Hold the phone near to your ear and sayclearly the word(s) you want to record asa voice tag after you hear the startingtone.

    7. After recording, the phone plays therecorded tag andPlaying voice tag isdisplayed. If you do not want to save therecording, pressStop.

    8. When the voice tag has been successfullysaved,Voice tag savedis displayed and abeep sounds.

    The voice tag is now stored in the phonesmemory and a symbol appears afterthe phone number with the voice tag.

    Note: At any given time ten phonenumbers can have a voice tag attached.When the memory becomes full, delete

    some of the voice tags; use the scroll keysor to find the number you want to

    erase a voice tag from.

    Making a call by using a voice tag1. In the standby mode, press and hold

    Names to start the voice dialling: a shorttone is played andPlease speak nowisdisplayed.

    2. Hold the phone in the normal positionnear to your ear and say the voice tagclearly.

    3. The phone plays the name and thenautomatically dials the number of therecognised voice tag after 1.5 seconds.

    If the textNo voice tags savedisdisplayed after you press and holdNames, make sure that the phonesmemory is in use.

    Making a call using the HDC-9P headset

    1. Press the Headset key: a short tone isplayed.

    2. Say the voice tag clearly.

    3. The phone plays the recognized tag andthen automatically dials the number ofthe recognized voice tag after 1.5seconds.

    the phone near to your ear to listen to thevoice tag.

    Changing a voice tag1. In the standby mode, pressNames to

    access the phone book.

    2. Search for the name with the voice tagyou wish to change.

    3. PressDetails. Use the scroll keys orto find the desired number. The

    symbol is displayed after the phonenumber with the voice tag.

    4. PressOptions. Scroll toVoice tag andpressSelect.

    5. Scroll toChangeand pressSelect:PressStart, then speak after tone is displayed.

    6. PressStart: the phone sounds a startingtone andPlease speak nowis displayed.

    7. Say the new voice tag clearly. The phonereplays the new voice tag and confirmsthat the new voice tag has been stored.

    Erasing a voice tag1. In the standby mode, pressNames to

    access the phone book.

    2. Search for the name with the voice tagyou wish to erase.

    3. PressDetails. Use the scroll keys orto find the desired number. The

    symbol is displayed after the phonenumber with the voice tag.

    4. PressOptions. Scroll toVoice tag andpressSelect.

    5. Scroll toEraseand pressSelect:Erasevoice tag?is displayed.

    6. PressOK to erase the voice tag.

    Assigning a phone number to aspeed dial key

    You can set any of the number keys -to work as a speed dialling key. To do

    this you need to assign a phone number to anumber key.

    1. PressNames and scroll toSpeed dialsand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the desired speed dial key (2 to9), and pressAssign.

    3. PressSearch, and scroll to the desiredname and pressSelect.

    4. PressSelect to assign the displayednumber. Alternatively, if you have storedmore than one number under the name,scroll with or to the desirednumber and pressSelect.

    After assigning a number to a speed dial key,you can call, view or change the number orundo the speed dial.

    Erasing a name and numberYou can remove names and phone numbersfrom the selected phone book one by one orall at once.

    To erase a name and number

    Note: If you have stored multiple numbersper name, the optionErasedeletes the name,all the numbers and the text types storedunder it.

    To erase all names and numbers

    3. Scroll to the phone book you want toerase (SIM cardorPhone) and pressOK.

    Sending and receiving names andphone numbers to/from acompatible phone

    You can send or receive a persons contactinformation as a business card either via IRor as an Over The Air (OTA) message ifsupported by the network.

    To send a business card as an OTA message,find the desired name and number from the

    phone book and then use the optionSendcard.

    To send a business card via IR, use the optionSend card via IR. See also Copying via IR onpage 21.

    When you receive a business card, pressShow. Then pressOptions, selectSaveorDiscard, and press Select.

    Copying via IR

    Copying a name and number fromyour phoneUsing your phones infrared (IR) port, you cansend phone book entries as business cards toa compatible phone or PC which is runningan appropriate application.

    For using your phone to send or receive datafrom such compatible devices, you need theappropriate communications softwareinstalled on them. Detailed installationinstructions and the required system filescan be found on the CD-ROM supplied withthe phone or on the Nokia website(www.forum.nokia .com). Also refer to

    section 7. Data and Fax Communications.

    1. Make sure that the other phone or the PCis set up to receive data via its IR port.

    2. Recall the name and phone number to becopied.

    3. PressOptions, scroll toSend card via IRto copy the phone number and name toanother phone or PC.

    4. PressSelect.

    Copying a name and phone number toyour phoneTo copy names and phone numbers fromanother compatible phone.

    1. PressMenu, scroll toInfrared(Menu 9)and pressSelect. Your phone is ready toreceive data through its IR port.

    The user of the other phone can now sendthe name and phone number via Infrared.

    2. Once the name and phone number havebeen copied to your phone, pressShow.Then pressOptions, selectSaveorDiscard, and press Select.

    Caller groups

    You can set the phone to sound a specificringing tone and show a selected graphic onthe display when you receive a call from aparticular name and phone number. To dothis, first include a name and number in a

    caller group. Then, define a ringing tone andgraphic for this group.

    Note: You can set the phone to ring onlyupon receiving calls from names andnumbers that belong to a specific callergroup by using the Alert forsetting undertheProfilesmenu, see Customising Profileson page 32.

    Adding a name and phone number in acaller group1. PressNames scroll with or to

    Caller groups, and pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the desired caller group andpressSelect.

    3. Scroll toMembersand pressSelect.

    Group graphic. To set the phone todisplay the group graphic, scroll to Onand pressOK.

    The option list includes options for viewingand sending (Send graphic) the graphic to acompatible phone, as an Over The Air (OTA)message, if supported by your network.

    You can also receive a new group graphic toyour phone as an OTA message. When youreceive a group graphic, pressShow, thenpressOptions, select Saveor DiscardandpressSelect. If you selected Save, reach thedesired caller group and pressOK.

    Removing a name and number from acaller group

    1. PressNames, scroll to Caller groupsandpressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the desired caller group andpressSelect.

    3. Scroll toMembersand pressSelect.

    4. Scroll to the name you want to remove,pressOptions and scroll to Removenameand pressOK.

    Memory status

    You can check what percentage of thephones internal memory is in use or howmany names and numbers are stored on theSIM cards memory and how much memory isstill free.

    1. When in the standby mode, pressNames.

    2. Scroll with or toOptionsandpressSelect.

    3. Scroll with or toMemory statusand pressSelect. The status of the SIMcard is displayed.

    5. Using the Menu

    The phone offers you an extensive range offunctions which are grouped in menus andsubmenus. The menus and submenus can be

    accessed by scrolling with or or byusing the appropriate shortcut number. Theheader line on top of the display helps you tolocate where you are in the menu.

    Most of the menu functions are providedwith a brief help text. To view the help text,scroll to the desired menu function and waitfor 15 seconds. To exit the help text, pressBack.

    Accessing a menu function byscrolling

    1. To access the menu facility, pressMenu.Press or to reach the desired mainmenu, e.g.Settings. PressSelect to enterthe menu.

    2. If the menu contains any submenus, findthe one you want by scrolling with or

    . PressSelect to enter the submenu(e.g.Call settings).

    3. If the menu you have selected containssubmenus, repeat step 2. PressSelect toenter the next submenu (e.g.Anykeyanswer).

    4. Press or to find the setting of yourchoice and confirm the chosen setting.

    6. Menu functions

    Messages(Menu 1)

    Within the Messagesmenu you can read,write and send text and picture messages orsave your own messages in the folders forlater use.

    Note: Before you can send any text orpicture messages, you need to store yourmessage centre number with the Messagecentre numberoption under Messagesettingsof this Messagesmenu. Contactyour service provider for the message centrenumber.

    Writing and sending text messages

    Within the Write messagemenu you canwrite and edit text messages of up to 160characters. You have two methods of writingmessages:

    the method used traditionally in mobile

    phones, indicated by , and another called predictive text input,

    indicated by .

    1. When in the standby mode, pressMenu,pressSelectwhen Messagesis displayed.

    Writing words with predictive text input

    1. Start writing a word by using the keysto . Press each key only once for

    To delete a character, pressClear.

    Alternatively, pressOptions, scroll toInsert symbol, and pressSelect. Scrollto the desired symbol and press Use.

    2. When you have finished writing the wordand it is correct , confirm it by pressing

    or adding a space with .

    3. If the word is correct, start writing thenext word.

    If the word is not correct, you have thefollowing options:

    Press repeatedly until the desired

    word appears and confirm it. PressOptions, scroll to Next match

    and pressSelect.

    If the ? character is displayed after theword, the word you intended to write isnot in the dictionary. To add the word tothe dictionary, press Spell.

    Adding the desired word to the match list

    1. If no matches are found in the predictivetext input mode, you can insert a newword into the dictionary. Press Spell andkey in the desired word in traditional textinput mode.

    2. Press Save to save the word.

    Note: When the dictionary becomes full, thenew word replaces the oldest added one.

    Writing compound words

    1. Key in the first part of the word andaccept it by pressing .

    2. Write the last part of the compoundword and accept the word by pressing

    You can find the list of default templates inthe Templatesfolder of the Messagesmenu.You can edit the text message templates toyour liking, but the original templates will be

    restored when the Menu 4-7 is selected(Restore Factory Settings).

    To insert a template:

    1. When in the Write messagemenu, pressOptions.

    2. Scroll to Insert templateand pressSelect.

    3. Scroll to the desired template and press

    Select.The icon is displayed in front of textmessage templates. The icon isdisplayed in front of picture messagetemplates.

    Inserting picturesYour phone offers you 10 picture messagetemplates. You can also save new picturesinto the Templatesfolder.

    Note: This function can be used only if it issupported by your network operator orservice provider. Only phones that offerpicture messages feature can receive anddisplay picture message.

    To insert a picture in a text message:

    1. When in the Write messagemenu, pressOptions.

    2. Scroll to Attach pictureand pressSelect.The list of picture message templates isdisplayed.

    3. Scroll with or to the desiredpicture message template and pressViewto view it.

    Note: picture templates have defaulttitles but you can change them byselecting the option Renameand keyingin the new title.

    4. To insert the picture into your message,

    pressUse. When the picture has beenattached to your message, the text Pictureattachedis displayed and the phone returnsto the Write messagemenu. Theindicator means that the picture has beenattached. The number of characters thatyou can enter in a picture message dependson the size of the picture.

    5. If you want to see the text and the picturetogether before sending the message,scroll to Previewand pressSelect.

    If you want to change the attachedpicture, select the option Change picture.If you want to remove the attachedpicture, select the option Removepicture.

    6. To send the message, pressOptions andselect the option Send.

    Or, alternatively:

    1. When in the Messagesmenu, scroll toTemplates. The list of text and picturemessage templates is displayed.

    2. Scroll to the desired picture messagetemplate and pressSelect. Then proceedas described above (steps 4-6).

    Note that each picture message ismade up of several text messages.Therefore, sending one picturemessage may cost more than sendingone text message.

    Since picture messages are saved inthe phones memory, you cannot viewthem if you use the SIM card withanother phone.

    Reading and viewing text andpicture messages

    When you have received a text or picturemessage, the indicator and the numberof new messages followed by Message(s)receivedwill appear on the display.

    1. PressShow to view the message or pressExit to view it later.

    To read the text message later:

    Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll toInboxand pressOpen. Scroll to thedesired message and press Select to readit. An unread text message is indicated bythe icon in front of it. The messageis stored in the Inboxfolder after you

    have read it.

    To view the picture message later:

    Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll toInboxand pressOpen. Scroll to thedesired message and pressSelect to viewit. An unviewed picture message isindicated by the icon in front of it.

    2. While reading and viewing the message,pressOptions to scroll through the list ofoptions and pressSelectat thehighlighted option to select it.

    The option list includes options forerasing, replying, forwarding, moving,editing, and renaming the message youare reading. You can also change the fontsize of the message you are reading.

    Note that when you are replying to apicture message, only the text iscopied to your reply message. Whenyou are editing a picture message,only the text can be edited, not thepicture.

    If you want to save the picture forlater use select the option Savepicture: the picture is saved in the

    Templatesfolder.

    You can also copy the message to yourphones calendar as a reminder note(Copy to cal.). The Detailsoptionshows you, e.g., the senders name andphone number, message centre usedfor sending, reception date and time.If you want to extract numbers fromthe current message, use the option

    Use number.

    Replying to a message1. Once in a message you want to reply to,

    pressOptions, scroll to Replyor to Reply(text)if you are replying to a picturemessage, and pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to one of the following reply types

    and pressSelect.

    Empty screen. Original message is notincluded in the reply message.

    Orig. message. Original message isincluded in the reply message.

    Standard answers, e.g. Yes, Thank youor Congratulations. Only the selectedstandard answer is included in thereply message. The standard answercan also be modified and additionaltext can be added.

    Template. The selected template isincluded in the beginning of the replymessage. The template text can bemodified and additional text can beadded.

    3. If you selected Template, the list oftemplates, including e.g. Please callorSee you in, is displayed. Scroll to thedesired template and pressSelect.

    4. Write your reply message and pressOptions, scroll to Sendand pressSelect.PressOK to send the message to thedisplayed number.

    Special sending options

    Sending a message to multiplerecipientsYou can send a message to multiplerecipients. When sending a reply message,use the Multiple copiesoption under Forw.Options, and when writing and sending amessage, use Multiple copiesunder SendOptions.

    1. After you have written the message, pressOptions scroll to Send optionsand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to Multiple copiesand pressSelect: the list of names is displayed.

    3. Scroll to the desired name and pressOKto send the message.

    4. Then select the next recipient and pressOK.

    5. When you have sent the message toeveryone you want to send it to, pressDone.

    Sending a message by message profileYou can send or forward a message, for

    example to a fax number, by using theMessage profileoption under Send Optionsor under Forw. Optionsif supported by yournetwork.

    For example, in order to send a message to afax, you first need to define one messageprofile under the message settings for faxtransmissions. See Message settings onpage 30.

    1. After you have written the message, pressOptions and scroll to select Send optionsand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to Message profileand pressSelect.

    3. Scroll to the message profile you havedefined for fax transmissions and pressSelect.

    4. Enter the fax number or recall it from thephone book and pressOK.

    Tip: If you have stored the faxnumber under the Defaultrecipient numbersetting of theselected message profile, thephone automatically suggestthat number. PressOK to acceptthe number.

    Organising your messages

    All the messages stored in your phonesmessage memory are organized in folders.

    Inbox and Outbox foldersAfter you have read an incoming text or

    picture message, the phone stores themessage in the Inboxfolder of the Messagesmenu.

    When you save a message you have writtenand/or sent, the phone stores the message inthe Outboxfolder.

    Note: The blinking icon indicates thatthe message memory is full. Before you canreceive or send new messages, delete some

    of your old messages.

    Archive folder and user-specifiedfoldersIf you want to make sure that certainmessages will not be overwritten when themessage memory becomes full, or if youwant to further organise your messages, youcan move some of your messages to theArchivefolder or you can add new folders

    under the Messagesmenu and store some ofyour messages there.

    Adding a folder:

    1. Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll to Myfoldersand pressSelect.

    2. PressOptions and scroll to Add folderand pressSelect. Enter the name of thenew folder and pressOK.

    Deleting the contents of a single folder orof all the folders:

    1. Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll to Erase alland pressSelect.

    2. Do either of the following:

    Scroll to the folder whose contents youwant to delete and pressOK. Then pressOK at the prompt Erase all readmessages from folder?

    Scroll to All readand pressOK to erase allread messages from all the folders. ThenpressOK at the prompt Erase all readmessages from folder?

    Deleting a folder:

    1. Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll to Myfoldersand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the folder you want to deleteand pressOptions.

    3. Scroll to Remove folderand pressSelect.

    Note: When you delete a folder, all themessages contained in that folder willalso be deleted.

    Moving or erasing a text or picturemessage:

    1. Once in the desired message, pressOptions.

    2. Scroll to Moveor to Eraseand pressSelect.

    3. If you want to move a message, scroll tothe selected folder name and pressOK.

    Message settings

    To access the message settings list:

    1. Once in the Messagesmenu, scroll toMessage settingsand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the setting you want to set and

    pressSelect.There are two kinds of message settings inyour phone, message profile specific settingsand settings common to all messages.

    A message profile is a group of settingsneeded for sending messages. The phoneuses the settings Message centre number,Messages sent asand Message validityunder the Message settingsmenu as adefault message profile if you do not select

    another set when sending a message.

    When you, for example, reply to a messageand select Sendor when you write a messageand select Send, the phone automaticallyuses the default message profile.

    You can also send a message to a fax or to ane-mail address (if supported by your serviceprovider) if you have defined a messageprofile with the proper settings for fax ore-mail transmissions. See also Specialsending options on page 28.

    Settings common to all messagesThe following message settings under theMessage settingsmenu are common to alloutgoing messages, irrespective of theselected set.

    Delivery reports. You can request thenetwork to send delivery reports on your

    messages (network service). A deliveryreport is indicated by an in front of themessage header.

    Reply to you via same centre. Thisnetwork service allows the recipient ofyour message to send you a replymessage via your message centre.

    Message profiles1

    Within the Message profilessubmenu of theMessage Settingsyou can change thesettings of a particular message profile2. Each of the message profiles has its ownsubmenu with the following functions:

    Message centre number. With thissubmenu you can store the phonenumber of the message centre needed forsending messages.

    Messages sent as. For normal messages,select the option Text, for faxtransmission, select the option Fax, etc.Note that you can only use the optionsFax, E-mailand Paging, if your messagingservice offers the facility to convert themessages into these alternative formats.Contact your service provider foravailability of this function.

    Message validity. This network service

    allows you to set the length of time thatyour messages are stored at the messagecentre while attempts are made to deliverthem.

    Default recipient number. The phone willsuggest the number stored under thisoption as a default number for messagesending when this message profile isselected.

    Message profile name. Allows you torename each message profile.

    1. The message profiles menu is only displayed if your SIM card supports more than one set. Each set appears in itsown submenu and may have any name.

    2. The number of sets depends on how many sets your SIM card offers.

    Call register(Menu 2)

    Within this menu you can view and deletephone numbers registered by the phone, andview the approximate length and cost ofyour calls (network service).

    In the options of the missed calls, receivedcalls or dialled numbers you can:

    call the number

    save the number in the phone book

    view the date and time of the call

    view, edit or erase the number from thelist.

    Note: The phone registers missed andreceived calls only if the network supportsCalling Line Identification (CLI), the phone isswitched on and within the networks servicearea.

    Missed calls (Menu 2-1)

    This function allows you to view a list of thelast ten phone numbers from whichsomebody has tried to call you with nosuccess (network service).

    Tip: When a note about missed callsis being displayed, pressList toaccess the list of missed calls. Tocall back immediately, press .

    Received calls (Menu 2-2)

    This function allows you to view a list of the

    ten phone numbers from which you havemost recently accepted calls (networkservice).

    Dialled numbers (Menu 2-3)

    Within this submenu you can view the tenphone numbers that you have most recentlycalled or attempted to call.

    Tip: To quickly access the list oflast dialled numbers, pressonce when the phone is in thestandby mode.

    Erase recent call lists (Menu 2-4)

    This menu allows you to erase all the phonenumbers listed in the Missed calls, Receivedcallsand Dialled numberssubmenus. Notethat you cannot undo the operation.

    These phone numbers are also erased in thefollowing cases:

    When you switch on the phone with aSIM card inserted which is not one of thefive SIM cards used most recently withthe phone.

    When you change the Security levelsetting (Menu 4-6-5).

    Call duration (Menu 2-5)This function allows you to view the duration ofyour incoming and outgoing calls in hours,minutes and seconds. You can also clear thecall timers by using the Clear timersfunction(Menu 2-5-5). To clear the timers, you need thesecurity code. See Access codes on page 50.

    Note: The actual time invoiced forcalls by your service provider may

    vary, depending upon networkfeatures, rounding-off for billing,and so forth.

    Call costs (Menu 2-6)

    This network service allows you to check thecost of your last call or all calls. The callcosts are shown separately for each SIMcard. You can limit the cost of your calls to acertain amount of charging units or units of

    currency by using the option Call cost limit.You can make and receive charged calls aslong as the specified cost limit is notexceeded. The number of remaining units isshown in the standby mode. You may needthe PIN2 code to set the cost limit. You canset the phone to show the remaining talktime (cost limit) in terms of charging unitsor units of currency by using the option

    Show cost. You may need the PIN2 code toselect the currency or unit. Contact yourservice provider for charging unit prices. Theoption Clear counters allows you to resetthe call cost counters. To clear the countersyou need the PIN2 code. See Access codeson page 50.

    Note: When no more charging orcurrency units are left, only calls tothe emergency number 112 may bepossible.

    The actual time invoiced for calls byyour service provider may vary,depending upon network features,rounding-off for billing, and soforth.

    Profiles(Menu 3)

    Within theProfilesmenu, you can adjust andcustomise the phone tones for differentevents, environments and caller groups.

    Activating a user profile

    If you want to change the currently selectedprofile (Generalas default), press thekey quickly (in the standby mode). Then scrollwith or to the profile you want toactivate and pressOK.

    Tip: Press the key quickly (inthe standby mode). Then press the

    key corresponding to the number ofthe profile and wait for threeseconds. For example, to activatetheSilentprofile, first press thekey quickly and then press .

    Customising Profiles

    1. PressMenu, scroll toProfilesand pressSelect. The following list of optionsappears: General,Silent, Meeting,Outdoor, Pager, Handsfree, Headset.

    Note:Handsfreeand Headsetwill notappear in theProfileslist unless the CARK-91 car kit or the HDC-9P headset areconnected to your phone. However, thesettings for the Handsfreeand Headsetwill remain in the menu once connected.

    2. Scroll to the desired profile and press

    3. Select Personaliseand pressOK.

    Note: Selecting Activateonly makes theselected profile the current one, theprofile cannot be customised in this way.

    When the phone is connected to theCARK-91car kit or the HDC-9P headset,the Activatefunction will not beavailable.

    4. Scroll to the setting you wan tocustomise and pressSelect.

    5. Scroll to the desired option and pressOK.

    Settings you can personaliseOnce you have selected the Personaliseoption, you can customise the following

    settings of the selected profile: Incoming call alertto define how the

    phone notifies you of an incoming voicecall. The options are: Ringing, Ascending,Ring once, Beep Onceand Off.

    When Incoming call alertis set to Off, noringing tone or other alert tones will beheard. This silent mode is indicated by .

    Ringing toneto set the ringing tone type

    for voice calls.

    Tip: If you receive a ringing tonevia IR or OTA, you can store fiveringing tones at a time in theringing tone list. If you receive aringing tone via IR or OTA, andthere is no space for the ringingtone in the ringing tone list, youcan replace one of the tones in

    the ringing list with the newringing tone.

    Ringing volumeto set the volume levelfor the ringing and message alert tones.

    Vibrating alertto set the phone to vibrateat an incoming voice call and at anincoming message. The vibrating alertdoes not work when the phone isconnected to a charger or desktop stand.

    Message alert toneto set the ringingtone type for messages.

    Keypad tonesto set the volume level forkeypad tones or to set the keypad tonesoff.

    Warning tonesto set the warning toneson or off. For example, when set to on, thephone sounds a warning tone when thebattery is running out of power.

    Alert forto set the phone to ring onlyupon calls from phone numbers thatbelong to a selected caller group. Use thescroll keys or to reach the desiredgroup and pressMark.

    To set a ringing tone and a group graphicfor a caller group, see Setting a ringingtone and graphic for a caller group andrenaming a caller group on page 22.

    Automatic answer(in HandsfreeandHeadsetprofiles only) to set the phone toanswer an incoming voice call after a fewseconds.

    Note: This function can only be usedwhen your phone is connected to a

    headset or to a car kit equipped with theignition sense option, with the ignitionswitched on.

    Lights(in Handsfreeprofile only) to setthe display and keypad lights to On orAutomatic.

    Renaming profiles

    You can rename the profiles to your personalliking except for the General, HandsfreeandHeadsetprofiles.

    1. PressMenu, scroll with or toProfilesand pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to the profile you want to renameand pressOptions, then scroll to Renameand pressOK.

    3. Enter the new name and pressOK. Toenter letters, see Storing names andnumbers on page 15.

    Settings(Menu 4)

    Alarm clock (Menu 4-1)

    You can set the phone to alarm at a specifiedtime within the Alarm clockmenu (menu4-1). To access this submenu, pressMenu(when in the standby mode) then scroll toSettingsand pressSelect.

    The alarm clock uses the time format set forthe clock: 12-hour or 24-hour format. In thestandby mode, the indicator in theheader line shows that the alarm is set toOn.You can switch the phone off and the alarmclock will still work.

    When the alarm time expiresThe phone will sound an alert tone. When thephone is alerting, Alarm! is also shown andthe phones lights flash.

    PressStop to stop the alarm. If you let thephone alarm for a minute or press Snooze,the alarm stops for a few minutes and thenresumes.

    Note: If the alarm time expires while the

    phone is switched off, the phone startsalarming. If you pressStop, the phone asks ifyou want to activate the phone for calls.PressYes to register orNo to keep the phoneswitched off.

    Note: Do not switch on the phonewhen wireless phone use isprohibited or when it may causeinterference or danger.

    Clock (Menu 4-2)

    The phone is provided with a clock. When thephone is set to show the clock, the currenttime is shown in the top right of the displaywhen the phone is in the standby mode.

    In this menu you can set the time display toOn or Off, set the time or select between the12-hour or 24-hour time formats.

    Setting the clock:

    1. Once in Menu 4-2, pressSelect.

    2. Scroll to Set the time, and pressSelect.

    3. Enter the present time and pressOK.

    The clock also serves the following functions:

    Messages(Menu 1), Call register(Menu 2),Alarm clock(Menu 4-1), and Calendar(Menu 8).

    Note: If the battery is removed from thephone for a long time, you may need to setthe time again.

    Call settings (Menu 4-3)

    Anykey answer (Menu 4-3-1)

    When this function is set to On, you cananswer an incoming call by pressing any keybriefly, except and .

    Automatic redial (Menu 4-3-2)When this function is set to On, your phonewill make as many as ten attempts toconnect the call after an unsuccessful callattempt.

    Speed dialling (Menu 4-3-3)When this function is set toOn, the namesand phone numbers assigned to the speeddial keys to can be dialled bypressing and holding the correspondingnumber key. Note that pressing and holdingthe key dials your voice mailboxnumber.

    Call waiting service (Menu 4-3-4)When this network service is activated, thenetwork will notify you of a new incomingcall while you have a call in progress. SeeCall waiting on page 12.

    Line for outgoing calls (Menu 4-3-5)The SIM card may be used with twosubscriber numbers, i.e. two phone lines.However, this is a network service and thefunction is available if your SIM cardsupports it. For more information onavailability, please contact your networkoperator or service provider.

    Within the menu 4-3-5, you can select thedesired line for making calls. However, calls

    on both lines can be answered regardless ofthe selected line.

    If you select line 2 and have not subscribedto this network service, you will not be ableto make calls. You can prevent this menufunction from being used by selecting theoption Lockfrom the option list. You can getback to phone line 1 by pressing and holding
