What is it?
• A new hardware and software platform evolution for Business Communications Manager class of products.
• A new platform that delivers the value of BCM (TDM and IP converged voice + applications) down to small sites
– 3 to 30 users, – either in stand-alone or – networked configurations
• Value based on overall system cost, including– operations costs in installation and – support costs and – overhead costs and – overall effectiveness.

Flexibility & Functionality
• Start from a compact, VoIP capable main base chassis with support for analog trunks, analog stations and digital stations
Compact Base Unit• max 4 analog trunks• max 4 analog stations• max 12 digital stations• max 32 IP stations• max 24 IP trunks• 2 RJ-45 LAN ports
Expansion chassis• Digital stations• Digital trunking• Analog trunking• Analog stations
• Add to this configuration using the BCM50 Expansion Chassis
• A full suite of MBM modules is supported• Also available with a choice of 2 integrated router cards
• ADSL to ethernet router - or• Ethernet to ethernet router
MBMs Supported• 4x16 Combo• ASM8• CTM4• CTM8• DTM• BRI• DSM16• DSM32• DDIM• GATM4• GATM8
NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL PG 7BCM 50 – Aug 3, 2004
Flexible Configurations
• Ports on the main chassis are enabled through the application of soft keys: Analog trunk interfaces, Analog station interfaces, Digital station interfaces, IP sets, IP trunks, Expansion interfaces.• Capacity expansion is enabled by purchasing more keys for the base unit or through the addition of MBMs.• This supports the creation of capacity based commercial bundles with a great deal of flexibility:• Customers of the BCM50 will be able to choose and pay for the capacity they require.
– Optimize the pricing down to the smallest line configurations

Traditional Voice + VoIP
• Complete telephony feature set from BCM 3.6– All legacy digital telephone sets! – Investment protection for existing Norstar and BCM customers
• 2 x 10/100 Ethernet LAN ports• Up to 32 IP telephones
– i2004, i2002 and the new i2001– i2050 soft client – DCHP server included for management of IP sets
• Up to 24 IP trunks– H.323 V4– Internal H.323 routing table or external gatekeeper– G711 A law, G729,A,B– T.38 fax– G.168 echo cancellation

Flexible Installation Options
The main unit and the expansion chassis share the same plastic packaging
Units can be stacked (with positive alignment features) for desktop or shelf mount configurations
The compact size allows for side by side configuration to fit into a standard 19 inch rack mount . Tab details ensure that the two units are exactly aligned
Side by side and stack can be used in combination
Wall mountable using the optional wall mount bracket which features an integrated cable management bay for tidy cable dressing

Built on “Nortel Corporate Linux”
• BCM50 will be the first LPS product built on Linux• Advantages include:
– Improved security environment – Direct developer access to the OS layer for fast issue resolution– Allows ownership of the strategic direction and ensuring an effective,
long term support strategy– Tap into a huge community for OS support and functions designed for
the Linux OS
• Nortel Corporate Linux is a Nortel initiative first applied to our major call servers.
– Developed for the high reliability, secure carrier market– In 2 years of exposure on the compact call server, there have been 0
linux kernel issues– Fully supported in Nortel

A New Management Structure
• Why change the management structure?– Simplification! – Ease of installation
• New client application for management– Framework is not specific to BCM50– “Data cartridge” gives the framework the personality to manage the BCM50– Future product direction could use this framework
• Standards based– Transport using CIM-XML over HTTP(S) to access data model– Used by client GUI and available to 3rd party management applications
• Task Oriented– Simpler – Less clicking and more programming
• Supports traditional Norstar set based management• Supports remote dial up management through a flexible internal
soft modem connection to a remote client application • Multi-element management using NCM
NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL PG 15BCM 50 – Aug 3, 2004
Single Element Management
Client Based• Very fast intuitive presentation• Standards based implementation (CIM-
XML)• Task oriented versus functionally grouped• Lower the training hurdle• Future proof architecture• Complete FCAPS coverage
Set Based• Existing Norstar management• Coverage only for core telephony and
core applications• Allows those who are trained and efficient
in using the Norstar methods to continue to use them
NORTEL NETWORKS CONFIDENTIAL PG 16BCM 50 – Aug 3, 2004
Multi Element Management
Network Operations Center – NOC• Network Configuration Manager - NCM• Multi-element server and database• Same client framework for the
management stations located anywhere on the network
IP
PSTN
Workstations• Can be anywhere on the IP network or remote
using modem off the PSTN network• At any station, the framework can run a single
element management session to a specific system or run multi-element back through the server
