PrefaceAstheworldmovesdeeperanddeeperintothedigitalrealm,thecreationofinformationisbecomingimpossibletomanageatapersonallevel.Manyyearsagowhensoftwarewasreleasedinphysicalmediainabox,wewereprovidedwithabeautifullywrittensoftwareguide.Thereallyamazingthingabouttheseguideswasthattheywerewellthoughtoutandreadable.Theyhadtobe,astheprintingcostsensuredthatonlytherelevantinformationwasprovidedandthemessagewasfocusedandprecise.Iwilladmitthatthecorrespondingsoftwarewaslesscomplicatedandsowastheworld.
Aswemovedtothedistributionofinformationinadigitalform,suddenlythephysicalboundariesofprintingwereremovedandtheuserwashandedtheoneroustaskof�ilteringouttherelevantinformationfromthedelugeofdatathatwasmadeavailableviaURLlinkstoseeminglybottomlesspitsofotherURLs.
Withtheadventofblogs,Twitter,YouTubeandtheplethoraofotherdistributionchannelsandauthorsofadvice,Ifeltaneedtogobacktobasics.
SAPhasreleasedtheirlatestversionofSAPSolutionManager,andwithit,mountainsofinformationfromvideosandwebinarstopresentationsandlive-sessions.Thelistgoeson,amountingtoasigni�icantamountoftimerequiredtoconsumeanddigestitall.IthankSAPforthiseffort.AsaserviceproviderintotheSAPeco-system,IliveandbreatheSAPSolutionManagerandamhappytoinvestmytimetoconsumeasmuchofthisinformationaspossible.YetwhenlookingthroughtheeyesofanSAPcustomer,Icanonlysympathize.

SAPSolutionManagerin2016SAPSolutionManager(SSM)hasbeenmaturingoverthepast3to5yearswithmajorimprovementsbeingmadeinthereleaseof7.1.WithastrongfocusonsupportinganoperationalSAPenvironment,signi�icantdevelopmentwasdonetoallowSSMtopositionitselfastheSAPlandscapemonitoringtoolofchoice.
Builtintothe7.1versionwasalsoafully�ledgedservicedeskandchangecontrolmanagementsystem.ThefullscopeofthesolutionearnedSSManITILcerti�icationthatcoveredall15ofthepossibleITILcerti�icationareas.Thiswasasigni�icantstepforwardinensuringthatSSMgottheattentionitdeservesasasolidandpro�icienttoolsetforthemonitoringandmanagementoftheSAPLandscape.

Thisnewversionhasbeenbuiltfromthebottomupandnotonlybringsacrossthetriedandtestedoperationalfocusedcapabilities,buthasacompletelyredesignedprojectandresourcemanagementcomponentthatwaslackinginversion7.1.Anothermajorchangethathasbeenlongoverdueistheabilitytobuildandde�inetheSAPbusinessprocessesbeyondthethree-levelhierarchystructure.
Thestrongfocustosupportthe'Build'phaseoftheSAPlifecycle,isevidentintheinclusionoftheSAP'sITPortfolioandProjectManagement6.1(ITPPM)componentinthe7.2release.
ThistogetherwithcapabilitiestosupportBusinessandITRequirementsgatheringcompletethepackagetosupporttheentirelifecyclefromrequirementsloggingandacceptancethroughprojecttimeandresourcemanagementtomanagingthechangeandreleasecycleand�inally,themonitoringofthebuiltfunctionalityintheproductivearena.SSMisnowpositionedasastrategicITmanagementtool.
AdditionalintelligencehasbeenaddedtotheoperationalcapabilitiesthatallowSSMtomonitoruseractivitywithgreateraccuracyandassistwithestablishingtheextentofwhatisbeingusedintheSAPERPenvironment.ThisinformationisextremelyvaluablewhenembarkingonaprojecttodocumentandbuildtheprocessesofanexistingSAPERPimplementation.

Tostrengthenthepositioningof7.2inaprojectenvironment,SSMincludesstandardizedprojectplansandSAPservicesandtheirActivateMethodology,up-to-datebestpracticesandsomepre-con�iguration.Toalignwiththeever-growingpopularityofAgileprojectmanagement,SSM7.2alsosupportsthenecessaryfeedbackloopstoallowforprojectstorunandbebuiltanddeployedinincrementalphases.Newreal-timedashboardsarenowalsoavailabletoaddanewlevelofreporting.

ANewAudienceWhenSSMwassocializedinthemarketasanoperationstoolset,thefocuswaspredominantlyonthetechnicalusageofthetool.Thismeantthatitsoutputwasconsumedbythetechnicalteamsoftherespectiveorganizationsandanydeploymentbusinesscasewassupportedbytechnicalarguments.Overthepast2years,afundamentalshifthastakenplaceandtheconversationsaroundSSMhavemovedfrommainlytechnicalinnaturetobeingmorebusinessfocused.
Thisisnottosaythatthetechnicalcapabilitiesarenolongerimportant;onthecontrary,withtheever-increasingcomplexityofthelandscapesandthedriveforsimplicity,thetechnicalmonitoringandcontrolviaSSMisstillveryrelevant.
ThisnewbusinessaudienceisstartingtolookathowSSMcanoffervisibilitywithrespecttotheERPprocessef�iciencies,KPImeasurements,analytics,andbetterBusinessProcessdocumentationandvisualization.It'stheseconversationsthathavepromotedSSMtoamorebusiness-focusedtoolset.

ProductLifecycleManagementVersion7.2hasextendeditsreachbeyondtheSAPboundariesbyfacilitatingthebusinessrequirementsgatheringand,byusingthenewdesigninterface,processescannowbebuiltasneeded,andmonitoredaccordingly.Byincludingtheprocessdesignintothechangereleasecycle,theprocessesarealwaysuptodateandre�lectthecurrentproductivesolution,landscapeandsystems,thusre-enforcingSSM'sroleasthe'SingleSourceofTruth'.
Requirementsandprocessdesigninisolationdonotaddvalue;however,whenpositionedintotheApplicationLifecyclethetruevalueisextracted.TheApplicationLifecyclesatis�iesthe'Build'sideofthecyclebysupporting'PortfoliotoProject'and'Requirementto‘Deploy'phases.Fromthere,the'Run'sideofthecycleissupportedthroughthe'RequesttoFul�il'and'DetecttoCorrect'.
ThesephasesareeachsupportedbytherelevantcomponentsthatmakeupSSM,allowingthebusinesstomonitoranddrivecontinuousimprovementinanorganizedandgovernedframework.Byofferingthesecomponents,thereisaseamlessswitchfromBuildtoRun.Bynegatingtheneedforthird-partysoftwaretoassistwiththeselifecyclephases,theentireworkeffortiscarriedoutandconsumedinSSMthusencouragingreusability.

FioriLaunchpadAmajorstepforwardforSSM7.2,istheuseoftheFiorilaunchpad.The7.1transactioncodeswereneverreallyeasytorememberotherthan'SOLAR01'or'SOLAR02',whiletherestwerejustplainhorrible.The'workcenter'concepthasalsobeenretiredandreplacedwithamore�luidUI.
ThenewFioriAppsLaunchpadnowcomesprecon�iguredwithallthenecessaryFioritilesbeautifullyarrangedintheirlogicalgroupscateringforRolebasedsegregation.Thesidemenualsoallowsaquicknavigationtoanygroupsnotvisibleinthescreen,ratherthanusingthesliderbar.Moreoveruserscancreatetheircustomtilelayouttomatchtheirjobfunctionordailyactivities.
Additionally,thereisanincreasedfocusonprogressingtowardsamoreintuitive,graphicalinterfacethatwillgettheworkforcetohigherperformancelevelsrelativelyquickly.Bolsteringshorttrainingtimesforemployeestobecomepro�icientandproductive.

LookandFeelSAPhasalsopaidalotofattentiontotheUserInterfaceanduni�iedtheuserexperiencewithasinglelookandfeel.ThisnewuserinterfaceisbasedonHTML5(SAPUI5)andallowsforintuitivenavigationofthevariouscomponentsviathetypicalInternetbrowseranddeviceofchoice.
Switchingfromthe7.1environmentisabittrickyat�irstandsometimesfrustratingwhentryingto�indthescreensthatyouwerefamiliarwithin7.1,however,inaveryshortspaceoftime,thenavigationbecomesclearerastheintegrationandconnectednessofthecapabilitiesareunderstood.Thereisanaturalnavigationpathfromthefunctionalitybeingusedorbuilt,totheunderlyingstructuresthatareneededtosupportthecurrentworkeffort.
OneofthemostnotableupdatesarrivingwithSolu�onManager7.2isagraphicalmodellingenvironmentthatisfullycompliantwiththeBPMN2.0standard(BusinessProcessModellingNota�on)aswellastheunrestrictedprocesshierarchy.Thisredesignwasverynecessaryinordertoremovethe3-levelhierarchyrestric�onontheprocessdesign,andalso,tobringthe
stprocessmanagementcapabili�esintothe21 century.Byusingthenewrdbuilt-indesigntool,theneedfor3 -PartyToolsandtheassociated
synchronisa�oneffortsandcostsfallawayhencesimplifyingandcentralisingtheenvironment.

Withamultitudeofgraphicalmodelingtoolsinthemarket,SSMwasnoticeablybehindthetrendwithrespecttohowbusinessprocessesaredesigned,mappedandrepresented.ThenewdesignnowcatersforallBPMNnotationalobjectsincludingswim-lanesforsystemsandrolesaswellasdecisiontreesintheprocess�low.Thenavigationanddrawingofprocessesisintuitiveandtheuserisabletoquicklybuildtheas-isandto-beprocessesandassociatethemwiththerespectivelevelintheprocesshierarchy.
WiththemoveawayfromFlash-basedgraphicstowardsSAPUI5,SSMisnowabletoofferarangeofusefuldashboardsthatcoverapplicationspeci�icareas.ThedashboardingalsocatersforthecreationofaKPI-typeoverviewdashboardthatbringstogetherkey�iguresfromtheApplicationandBusinessOperationsaswellastheservicedesk.
Ifthesestandardfeaturesarenotadequate,SAPhasreleasedtheFocusedSolutionssuite.

FocusedSolutionsOverthelastfewyears,theSSMteamatSAPhavereceivedanabundanceofrequestsfromclientsforspeci�icdevelopmentstheyfeltwouldaddvalue.SAPalsoundertooktoaddwhattheythoughtwouldbevaluabletotheclientbase.Afairnumberoftheserequestshavematuredintofunctionalitythatwaseitherreleasedinlater7.1servicepacks,orwerecarriedoverto7.2.
Someofthesedevelopmentswere,however,keptasidefortheirspecialcustomers.TheseMaxAttentioncustomersareentitledtoadditionalcontentasde�inedintherespectivecontracts.InMaythisyear(2016),SAPannouncedthattheseready-to-rundevelopmentswouldbeavailabletoallSSMcustomersonanannualsubscriptionbasisviatheirSAPStore.Customerscannoweitherpurchasetheadd-onsdirectlyorviatheirSAPpartner.
Thesenewfocusedturnkeysolutionsaredesignedtoofferinsightandpresenttheoverallhealthofeithertheoperational(FocusedInsights)ortheprojectenvironments(FocusedBuild)respectively.FocusedInsightsisbasedonsevenprede�inedtemplatemodelsthatcanbeeasilycustomized.TheFocusedBuildhasbeendesignedtosupporttheAgileprojectmethodologyandseamlesslyintegratesintotheunderlyingprojects,releasemanagementandtestingenvironments.Themanagementofwavesandworkpackages,timelinesandresourcingisalsosupported.

Apointtonoteisthattheoldadageof'garbagein,garbageout'stillstands.Inorderfullyrealizethebene�itsoftheseinnovativeandslickdashboardsfortheFocusedSolutions,theunderlyingtechnologiesmustbecon�iguredandusedcorrectly,orinthecaseoftheFocusedBuild,thevalueofthedashboardcontentisdirectlyrelatedtotheextentthatSSMisusedtomanagetheAgileprojectsanditsassociatedelements.

FocusonReusabilityWiththedrivetowardssimplicityandreducedeffort,SSM7.2hasadoptedtheconceptofreusablelibrariesforprocessstepsandanysupportingobjectsanddocumentation.Duringtheprocessdesignexercise,theseobjectsareusedtobuildtherespectiveprocesses;however,theobjectitselfonlyexistsonceintheunderlyinglibrary.

SSM7.2takesthisconceptastepforwardbycon�nuouslyupda�ngthesteplibrarywithanynewprocessstepsbymonitoringtheunderlyingSAPERPsystems.Ifabusinesstransac�onisexecutedinthemanagedsystem,itwillbedetectedandaddedtothelibraryforlaterinclusionintherespec�veprocessdesignbytheprocessstewards.
Thelibrariesareintegratedwiththeopera�onalmonitoringframeworkaswellasthetes�ngframework,whichfurthersimplifiesandreinforcesthereusabilityoftheworkefforts.Forexample,intheProcessMonitoringdashboards,theprocessdesigndiagramsarere-usedandpopulatedwiththerespec�veKPIstatusandmonitoringobjectscrea�ngaconsistentlookandfeelbetweentheBuildandRunphases.
Theintroduc�onofthelibrarieshasresultedinProcessManagementin7.2replacingthe7.1Solu�onDocumenta�oncomponent.ItnowprovidesasingleprocesslandscapeforbusinessandIT.ThedesignoftheProcessManagementcomponentenablesthefullsupportoftheprocesslifecyclefromrequirementstobuild,andfinallydeploy.
Thiscreatesaenterprisetoolsetforallstakeholdersincludingarchitects,testersandproductdevelopers.

SAPHANASAPHANAasadatabaseofchoiceintheSAPlandscapeisseenbymanyasinevitable.Fortheearlyadopters,theimpacthasbeenexperienced;whethergoodorbadisnotthepoint.SAPHANAhasmaturedanditwillbecomeastandardfortheSAPcustomerbase.Howlongthiswilltakeisopenfordebate.
Inordertoacceleratetheprocess,SAPhasmadeaverygenerousdecisiontoallowallEnterprisecustomerstoimplementtheirSSM7.2onaHANAplatform,withoutanyadditionalHANAlicenseormaintenancefees,irrespectiveofthecurrentdatabasebeingused.SSM7.2customersarenotforcedtouseHANA,howevertheoptionisavailable.
DeployingSSMonHANAgivescustomersseveralbene�its,includingthechancetobecomefamiliarwithHANAintheSMlandscapebeforecommittingittotherestoftheSAPlandscapeandthesubsequentlicensingcommitments.TheHANA-basedSSMprovidesveryfasttextsearchtimesacrosstheITSMticketsandthedocumentrepository.And�inally,fortheSAPHANAonlylandscape,SSMcannowbefullyalignedwiththeHANAstrategy.

TestingSAPhascompletelyoverhauledthetestingcapabilities,eliminatingtheneedforthird-partysolutionsfortesting,especiallywhenimplementingthebusinesssuiteandS/4HANA.Alltherequiredcontentisprovided'outofthebox'.
ThissupportisextendedtoSAP,non-SAPandhybridsolutions,whetheron-premiseorcloud-based.
Thistestsuitehasmaturedfromthe7.1environmentswhereitiswidelyused.The7.2versionnowinheritsthesolidplatformandaddstoittoprovidestate-of-the-artautomation(CBTA),testplancreationandsimpli�iedtestscriptmaintenance,allofwhichintegrateseamlesslyintotheProcessandProjectManagementcomponents.
Aswiththegraphicalprocessdesigncapabilities,theTestSuitenowremovestheneedforanyintegrationwiththird-partysolutions,hencekeepingthetestingeffortcentralizedinSSM.Theabilitytointegrateisstillthereforexistingsolutions;however,goingforwardthereisastrongcaseforallaspectsoftestingtobecontainedinSSM.
Havinganauditrecordoftesteffortswiththerelevantsupportinglogsandartefactsstoredcentrallyandwiththecontextoftherespectivebusinessprocessandpossiblytheoriginalbusinessrequirement,createsaverystrongstatementwithrespecttogovernanceandcontrol.
TheabilityoftheTestSuitetooptimizethetestscopebasedontheImpactAnalyzerisstillverymuchastrongfeature,andisnowmorethaneveranimportantcomponentwhenlookingatreducingthetimeandcostofregressionandimpacttesting.

HowCloudyisSSM7.2?Withadventofcloudtechnologiesbecomingmoreprevalentinthebusinessarena,SAPhasensuredthatitspositioniswellde�ined.Withthis,itwasonlyamatteroftimebeforeSSMwasbroughtuptodatetoaccommodatethisshiftintheproductandservicesmarket.
Currently,theSAPproductportfolioservicesthetraditionalon-premiseaswellasthesoftwareasaservicemodel.Somewhereinbetweentherearealsothehostedsolutions.Inanintegratedworld,thereneedstobeconnectivitythatprovidestheuserwithasingleviewofthismulti-platformenvironment.SeeingasoneofSSM'srolesintheSAPeco-systemistoprovidethisview,itmeantthatSSM7.2hadtobecomeverycloudaware,especiallyforhybrid-typeenvironmentscomprisedofon-premiseandhostedsetups.
SAPhavebeenveryexcitedabout7.2withrespecttothecloudworldandstatethatSSMisfor,withandinthecloud.
The'for'coversthetraditionalon-premisesetupandthelevelofstandardsavailable,butalsoconnectstotheSAPcloudproductsandofferstherespectivecontent.
The'with'denotesthatSSMisnowcloselycoupledtotheSAPbackendandthroughthiscoupling,BestPractices,S/4HANAReadinesschecksandseveralotherservices,cataloguesandroadmapsareavailableondemandandarealwaysuptodateasthesearemaintained,calculatedandservicedinthebackend.OnSSM7.1,theseservices,etc.,weredeliveredviadownloadablecontent,addingtothemaintenancecomplexityofthelandscape.
Theusageofthesecomponentsin7.2isfullyintegratedintoSSMandreinforcesthe'SingleSourceofTruth'concept.

The'in'relatestotheabilitytodeploySSMinacloudenvironmentandconnecttomanagedsystemsoutsideofthecloud.Thisdeploymentcaneitherbefullyowned,controlledandbuiltbythecustomer,orforamorerapidapproach,SAPhasprovidedseveraldeploymentimagesintheirCloudApplianceLibrary(CAL).
Theseimagesaredesignedtotestdrivevariousscenarios.Thescenarioscoverthetestmigrationofthe7.1'SOLAR01'content,simpledemosfortheS/4HANApackageandlastlyascenariototestdrivetheFocusedSolutions.Additionalscenarioswillbeadded.TheaimoftheCALimageistodeployabasicworkingSolutionManagerwithinanhourfordemoortestingpurposesinacloudvendorenvironment.Itcanalsobeusedasafoundationforaproductivedeployment;however,somealignmentcon�igurationwillbeneededto�ititintotherespectivecustomerSAPlandscape.
