Page 2 OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE NOVEMBER 26, 2017
Dear Parishioners,
Both the Thanksgiving Holiday and the Feast of Christ the King invites
us to grow as Christians.
The Christian ideal is for spirituality and ethics to form a unified whole.
As followers of Jesus, loving our neighbor comes from the grace centered
in our soul, which is the Holy Spirit. Our goodness comes from God
alone. The more we cultivate our relationship with God, the more we can
care for our neighbor. And the more we care for our neighbor, the more
we open ourselves to the presence and influence of the Spirit. This inter-
twined, reciprocal, mutual relationship is never to be broken.
Next Sunday, Advent begins, a good rule of thumb, a retreat master once
told me, is that for every hour in church praying, I should perform two
hours of charity. His suggestion was not to encourage a mathematical ap-
proach to the faith but rather to keep me honest and balanced! I suspect,
you, like me, find it much easier to say a prayer rather than get involved
in helping a homeless person in need.
Peace,
Fr. Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie,
mnie w uczciwości i równowadze! Podejrzewam, że zarówno mi, jak i Tobie,
łatwiej jest odmówić modlitwę, niż zaangażować się w pomoc potrzebującym
bezdomnym.
Pokój,
Ks. Mike Meany

On
Friday, Dec. 1 at Noon
in the Main Lounge
of the
Union League Club
The First Friday Club of Chicago
Welcomes
Mr. John Shea Author, Poet, Theologian, Storyteller
Who will address the topic
"Christmas It Never Grows Old."
It will happen again very soon. We will gather around tables, in church pews, and on chairs and sofas in
family rooms, living rooms and great spaces for our celebration of Christmas 2017. It is inevitable. The
calendar tells us so.
Yet, it is possible that our Christmas can get lost amid all the expressions of Christmas we are about to en-
counter. Somewhere woven between the layers of Christmas shopping, retail discounts, gift giving, favorite
seasonal movies and music from classic to pop, charming stories about a Grinch and another about a reindeer
with a red nose, there is found yet another story, a Gospel story about a young Jewish woman who birthed her
first-born son, wrapped him in love and placed him in a manger. All expressions of Christmas are rooted in
this Story that never grows old.
John (Jack) Shea is the former Professor of Systematic Theology and former Director of the Doctor of
Ministry Program at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. He was Research Professor at the Institute
of Pastoral Studies, Loyola University Chicago. He was also Senior Scholar in Residence at the Park
Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith and Ethic.
He is a very popular speaker in parishes, organizations and programs throughout the Chicago area and
beyond. www.firstfridayclubchicago.org – Please register on line THANK YOU.
This year, the lunch fee is $45 for members and $55 for guests.
THE UNION LEAGUE CLUB HAS A DRESS CODE: Business attire for women and a shirt with collar for

WE PRAY TOGETHER Did you know that the lyrics of our hymns and songs are
actually beautiful prayers selected specifically for that
Mass? That makes our hymnal your prayer book! If you
are self-conscious about singing, participate by opening
the hymnal and praying the text of the hymn as others
sing. The Church encourages our full and active partici-
pation in the Holy Mass. When you sing, you encourage
others to do the same. Please use the hymnal!
