A Season Full of Faithfulness
As we enter this season of remembering and giving thanks, there is definitely excitement about our future as a community and as a church. I am thrilled to see where God will lead us in the days ahead and how we will be shaped together by His Word.
This is also a season focused on stewardship. Stewardship is about much more than money. Stewardship is about faithfulness; namely our faith support of the mission and ministry of God’s church. Stewardship is about developing a lifestyle around faithfulness with our time, talents, gifts, passions, and resources. Each week our worship bulletins conclude with, “Our service of worship has ended – our worship through service has just begun.” This understanding is at the heart of stewardship.
Some years ago Jane Quinn wrote in an article of Newsweek Magazine, “What you do with your money shows where your values lie.” (August 2001, Newsweek) The pages that follow in this edition of The Beacon are an outline of the values we hold as the people of First United Methodist Church. The church budget does require our monetary gifts. Moreover, the Mission and Ministry of First United Methodist Church invite us to invest ourselves in a variety of ways. Our stewardship is not exploited to underwrite a budget; rather we present our gifts to God, faithfully, as an offering and sacrifice of love.
Through our stewardship and our faithfulness, God shapes us into a people of faith. He molds us into reflections of His love and grace. He equips us for ministry in the world that He loves. Best of all, we undergo this transformation surrounded by other faithful disciples- together in the community of faith.
Stewardship is about alignment; aligning ourselves to God- His plans, His purposes, all for His glory. God is faithful- always diligent at work on our behalf. Now is the season where we have an opportunity to respond with a faithfulness all our own – stewardship.
I’ll look for you.

TEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR GIVING Used with Permission
The following Scriptures offer insights from the apostle Paul of giving as taught in the New Testament church:
1. The individual’s gift is to begin with self-giving. (2 Corinthians 8:5; 12:14)
2. The gift is to be a voluntary response to God, not forced. (2 Corinthians 8:5-7)
3. The believer is to reflect a response to the grace of God working in his/her life. (2 Cor. 8:9)
4. The example of Christ’s giving is to be the guide for the Christian. (2 Cor. 8:9,14)
5. The giver is to show a concern for human needs. (2 Cor. 8:14)
6. The giver is to express thanksgiving to God. (2 Cor. 8:14)
7. The gift is to be an expression of love. (2 Cor. 8:8-24)
8. The giver is to be cheerful. (2 Cor. 9:7)
9. The gift should be proportionate to God’s blessings of material possessions. (1 Cor. 16:2)
10. The giving should be systematic and regular. (1 Cor. 16:1-3)
Jesus established the standard for a Christian’s life when he said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35) As stewards we are called to give our time, talents and possessions to the glory of God.
