How is NLI different?How is NLI different? NLI is NOT a “course” - you ACTIVELY create what you will
learn, less emphasis on ready content more on application, learning from others, eliciting what you need
NLI involves change - your work, your leadership, your institution, maybe even you
NLI is not internal or external - it is both NLI is not something you “do there” but rather something you
“do here” - to get the most out of the experience you must do the pre-work, preparation, advance thinking, follow up, follow through and reflection
NLI invites you to leave your comfort zone....at times feels messy,
risky, vulnerable

RequirementsRequirements(1) a strategic initiative that seeds deeper connection with community
(2) involvement of a Sponsor for the strategic initiative (including time at Intensives and for Sponsor-only activities)
(3) personal and professional availability to fully participate
a. ongoing time for active work on strategic initiative b. audioconference seminars (1/mo for Fellows, 2/qtr for Sponsors)
c. peer application groups (1/mo for Fellows)
d. executive coaching (Fellows -1 hr/3 wks; Sponsors – 1hr/qtr)
e. preparation and follow up reading, written work and other activities (varies, but month before and after retreats more intense)
f. on-site Intensives (June 2014, October 2014, May 2015)
(4) successful completion of the application process
(5) Costs: $5,000 tuition, travel to/from Intensives, expenses related to your Strategic Initiative
What is the SI Sponsor?What is the SI Sponsor?Someone who is a project champion – a high level professional who has some
authority or power within the Fellow's center to influence the success of the proposed strategic initiative
What will they do (beyond NLI organized activities)? provide access to information, resources, contacts assist with content knowledge and opinions about the strategic initiative connect the Fellow with opportunities that advance the strategic initiative consult and help sustain the strategic initiative when there are set-backs, failures,
struggles, or mistakes help maintain focus, accountability, outward-looking and impact orientation promote the expectation that organizational change will result from this
experience join with the fellow in mutual learning, reflection
Note! Your letter of intent due in early December must list your likely SI Sponsor, so please engage this person EARLY in your thinking process.
What is Important?What is Important?(1) A great Strategic Initiative that will create learning and stimulate change
--something that has to happen...not contrived for NLI or “extra work”--externally oriented--big, bold, risky...might even fail (and probably will change)--requires action (not planning or writing)--requires coordination & cooperation (can’t do alone)--better if it is already funded or isn’t fund-raising per se
(2) A sensible Sponsor for the strategic initiative proposed
(3) A Fellow at the right moment to learn, engage the Sponsor
appropriately and lead the strategic initiative (resume & essay important here!) (4) An institution stable enough and has readiness to support all the above
