2009-2015Goal: More than double the number of STEM secondary teachers certified by Newberry College over a five-year period. Grant Investigators: Christina McCartha, Laura Lanni, Charles Horn, Renee Stubbs, Cynthia Aulbach, Master Teacher; John Luedeman, Project Evaluator.

Student Scholars: 5 Biology, 2 Chemistry, 13 MathGraduates: 18

2018 Update:Teaching: 13 (72%)Left Teaching: 5Earned Masters: 5Completed Teaching Commitment: 13

Professional Development:3 campus/local events each semesteropportunities for conference attendance.

Intellectual merit was derived from the quality of Newberry College’s programming. All scholars and certified teachers are content majors in their areas of specialization.

Broader impact of the program was achieved by contributing inquiry-based teachers of math, biology, and chemistry in the field who bring a rigorous knowledge of their content to students.

• Informal Education Opportunities: Outreach events, SC Science Olympiad

1) Recruit 9 to 16 additional STEM majors into teaching 2) Provide educational support for REMAST scholars3) Provide professional development (PD) opportunities

for mentors, scholars, scholar graduates (Teaching Fellows), and grant personnel

4) Pursue an innovative research agenda related to teaching

1) 11 REMAST Scholars recruited to date (goal met)

5 Teaching in STEM fields - 2 Math, 3 Biology; 6 Current Scholars

2) On-going: MayTerm education courses and experiences, informal education opportunities –both on-campus and off-campus
