Nursing Assistant I 176 Hours
Course Description
The Nurse Assistant I course is 176 hours. It is comprised of 53 hours of academics, 63 hours of lab, and 60 hours of clinical.
This course introduces physical care skills, psychosocial care skills, and role of the Nurse Aide required to provide care for pa-tients, residents or clients in a healthcare setting. Topics include activities of daily living, basic nursing skills, restorative skills, emo-tional and mental health needs, spiritual and cultural needs, communication, patient’s rights, legal and ethical behavior, personal care, and being a member of the healthcare team. Upon successful completion of the program, students will qualify to take the written and practical skills test at our own “In Facility Test Site” or at their selection of a “Regional Test Site”. Exam fees are listed in North Carolina Nurse Aide I Candidate book or online at www.pearsonvue.com Anyone interested in attending the Nurse Aide Program can check online for current class dates and times.

Entrance Requirement
into the Program
Student applications will be processed and accepted
on a first-come, first-serve basis at Orientation.
Therefore, it is important to adhere to the entrance
requirements to be assured a seat in one of the upcom-
ing classes.
1. A TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) reading
test is required prior to orientation unless a recent
College entrance exam has been taken or student

Responsibility of the Student:
After acceptance into the program, it is the responsibility of
the student to complete the clinical requir ements two (2)
weeks prior to the clinical start date indicated on the class
calendar. Adherence to the Nursing Assistant I regulations,
including the clinical requirements, is the student’s respon-
sibility, NOT the coordinator or the instructor for the
program.

Clinical Requirements
Upon acceptance into the Nurse Assistant I program,
the student must agree to the following requirements:
1. Student must have a current TB skin test .
2. Student must have the Hepatitis B vaccination or
see student handbook.
3. Varicella (Chicken pox) is a growing concern in
Healthcare personnel. Students must provide:
Documentation by physician with dates of
positive history;
Titer drawn if negative history of disease;
If none of above, will require 2 dose series with
documentation of dates.

The above immunization requirements must be met
before going to clinicals. Please bring all immuniza-
tion records to First day of class.
Clinical Uniform Requirements
1. Student must wear a college uniform (scrubs).
Information about the scrubs may be obtained at
the orientation.
2. Student must wear white or black socks with
pants, and white or black shoes (sneakers are
acceptable).
3. Student must wear a watch with a second hand.
The numerals and face of the watch should be
large enough for easy reading.
4. Student must have a personal stethoscope to use
in labs and clinicals.
5. Student must wear a student name badge at all
times during clinicals. The name badge will be
provided by the College.
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
Step 1: Note...If you are under 18 years old, we have to have a dual enrollment form completed by your high school or proof of your GED to turn in at the Orientation Session. Step 2: A criminal background check and drug screen is required prior to Orientation. Step 3: Students must attend the Orientation Session before their chosen NA I class begins. Call 252-222-6200 to sign up. Orientation will include: registration, present drivers license, original Social Security card or military card. Fees will be taken with registration. Student Handbooks will be distributed and discussed at that time. In-house NA I Student Manual will be distributed the first day of class. Dear Prospective Student,
We look forward to helping you in obtaining your Nurse Aide I certification. Please
review the enclosed orientation/class sheet, US Info Group form (for the criminal
background check and drug screen) and CNA I Program application form.
Before registering for the Nurse Aide I Class you must complete the following prior to
orientation:
1. Sign up for orientation once you have chosen an orientation session by calling 252-
222-6200.
2. Complete the criminal background check and drug screen online. This is a $25 fee
for background and $52 fee for drug screen. You will receive a hard copy of the
results for yourself. Do not send or bring your copy to the coordinator.
NOTE***The online criminal background check is required. Your local county
background check is NOT adequate***
3. You have either taken the TABE test (Test of Adult Basic Education), previously
taken a college entrance exam or currently have a degree. If needing to take the
TABE test, contact Pam Brecheisen at 252-222-6212 to schedule a test date.
4. Attend the orientation date you signed up for. Please bring matching ID and Social
Security card with you to orientation.
5. At orientation, you are welcome to register for your class. At that time, you will
hand in the application form and pay required fees ONLY when all of the prior
requirements are fulfilled, otherwise you will need to contact me during my office
hours at the Continuing Education Bldg., Monday – Thursday, 11:30 am – 3:00 pm
to register after the requirements have been met. (Please note last day to pay fees is
day of class, however, there is no guaranteed placement at that time.)
6. Purchase required books from the bookstore in the Bryant Building. The books for
the NA I class are: AHA BLS CPR and Hartman’s Nursing Assistant Care: Long
Term Care.
7. Purchase Nurse Assistant I Student Manual at the time of registration. This book
costs $24.00. The book is distributed in the classroom on the first day of class.
8. The classroom is located on the first floor in the Wayne West Building, Room
122a, unless otherwise indicated.

Student Online Criminal Background Check/Drug Screen Request Procedure
The cost for your Criminal Background Check is a flat fee of $25.
The cost for a 12 Panel Drug Screen is $52.
a. Go to: www.usinfogroup.com
b. Click on the University/Community Colleges Student Access picture box.
c. Enter the following USERID and Password.

e. Follow the instructions to request your criminal background and/or Drug Screen:
Please note you must have an active email address to complete the ordering
process.
f. If you are ordering a drug screen you will receive an email with a drug screen
registration form attachment. Print the form and go to the drug testing facility
location listed on the form.
Drug screens must be completed no later than 48 hours from the date the on-
line registration is created. The expiration date and time is notated at the top
of the form. g. Your Criminal Background Check/Drug Screen will be processed upon
successful processing of your credit/debit card.
h. Upon completion of your Criminal Background Check/Drug Screen, you will
receive an email from USInfoGroup notifying you of the completed request(s).
i. To view your completed request(s), follow the steps above for a, b, c and d. Follow
the instructions for returning students.
j. Upon completion of your request, an electronic copy will be forwarded to your
clinical site(s) if they are known.

In order to successfully complete the Nursing Assistant program all students are required to attend
clinical rotations. The clinical portion of your training will be completed at Carteret General Hospital
and a designated skilled nursing facility. In order to complete this training you must pass a criminal
background check prior to your clinical rotations. If you fail to complete a criminal background check or
you do not pass the criminal background check you will not be allowed to attend the clinical rotations.
This will result in unsatisfactory completion of the course. In addition, no refund for registration fees
will be given.

CCC Corporate and Community Education Refund Policy
You are entitled to a 100 % REFUND if: You officially withdraw from the class before the first class meeting by submitting a refund request form.
You submit a refund request form because the college changes the course schedule to the extent that you can no longer attend.
Your class is canceled by the College. In this circumstance, you do not have to submit a refund request form.
You are entitled to a 75% REFUND for an occupational class if:
Your course meets 4 times or less and you submit a refund request form the first night of class OR
Your course meets 5 times or more and you submit a refund request form before the course meets 10% of the total course time. For example, if your class will meet a total of 100 hours, you need to request your refund prior to the 10th hour of the course.
Your class is a contact hour class and you submit a refund request form prior to the tenth calendar day of the class.
If you meet the above criteria and need to request a refund for a class: Contact us at 222-6200 and we will mail you a form or you can obtain a refund form from the Corporate and Community Education Building or from room 103 of the Wayne West Building. The college business office will mail a check to you after the refund form has been processed. If you have a prior indebtedness with the College, the refund will be applied there first. It takes at least 4 to 6 weeks for the refund to be processed.
There is no refund for student insurance fees or supply fees.
There is no refund for community service or self supporting classes.
If you do not understand our refund policy, please call 222-6200 as soon as possible.

Summer 2020 Schedule
Nursing Aide I Orientation Prior to attending orientation, you will need to get a Nurse Aide packet from Corporate and Community Education (252-
222-6200), complete a criminal background check ($25 fee) and 12 panel drug screen ($52 fee) through usinfogroup.com,
and sit for a TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) reading test unless a degree or college entrance exam has been
completed. Social Security card and valid government ID are required at orientation. You will register and pay
$229.80 for the CNA I class of your choice at orientation if all paperwork is complete with approved criminal background
check and drug screen needed for clinicals. Note: Students must preregister for orientation.

Nursing Aide I (CNA I) Our classes offer hands-on clinical experience to better prepare one to work as a professional nurse assistant with
confidence. Students will complete a total of 176 hours inclusive of class, laboratory and clinical experiences obtained in
long-term care facilities consistent with the standards of practice as directed by the North Carolina Division of Health and
Human Services encompassing the knowledge and skills required under the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA).
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment
Program (NNAAP) examination for listing on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry. There is an additional cost for this test of
$120.00 to be paid when registering online for the written and practical examination.

Nursing Aide I (CNA I) Refresher This course will help the student become proficient in their skills as a CNA I in order to pass the North Carolina test for
CNA I. This course is for any North Carolina CNA that has let their certificate expire within two (2) years. If coming
from another state, must complete the North Carolina CNA I program. This is a 40-hour course. Upon completion of the
CNA I Refresher, the student will be eligible to take the N.C. test at Carteret Community College or a regional testing
facility. There is an additional cost for this test of $120.00 to be paid when registering online for the written and practical
examination.
