WORD FROM THE EDITOR
Well September was disrupted by storms. I
hope you all made out OK. This delayed some things
so hopefully this month we get back on track.
I really need to work on the NASFiC 2017

Jerry Pournelle
I always enjoyed his columns in BYTE. He would talk
about new computer hardware and software and the challenges of
getting them installed properly. The problem would usually be
solved and that encouraged us facing similar problems.
I did not always agree with Pounelle, but I appreciated
his point of view. I would read his articles and the textbook
(Strategy of Technologies) he co-wrote for the Air Force
Academy. They all were worth reading and made me think.
Pournelle was active in the SF community. He was the
President of Science Fiction Writers of America and help start
the Grandmaster Award. Pournelle got Harlan Ellison press
credentials to cover Voyager’s flyby of Saturn.
He was passionate about science. One of his books had
a scientific error in the first edition. If someone brought that book
to a signing session, he would check the page and pen in the
correct information.
There is at least one more book coming out that is part
of The Legacy of Heorot series that he co-wrote with Steve
Barnes and Larry Niven.
Len Wein
I saw Len Wein at a few Worldcons. At Condian
(Worldcon 1994), he did a solo panel discussing one of his most
famous creations, Wolverine. This was cool since the con was in
Canada, Wolverine’s home country. At LoneStarCon 2
Awards
(source File 770 blog)
The following are the genre winners of the Primetime Emmy
Awards.
Outstanding drama series “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)
Outstanding TV movie “Black Mirror: San Junipero” (Netflix)
Outstanding lead actress in a drama series Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Outstanding supporting actress in a drama series Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Outstanding directing in a drama series Reed Morano (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Outstanding writing in a drama series Bruce Miller (“The Handmaid’s Tale”)
Outstanding writing in a limited series or movie Charlie Brooker (“Black Mirror: San Junipero”)
(Worldcon 1997), he participated in the Masquerade, as
Destruction of the Endless. At another Worldcon ,Wein talked
about working for DC and Marvel with fellow writer and editor
Jim Shooter.
One of my favorite memories is Wein talking about
writing for Superman. He loved it when Clark Kent would rip off
his shirt revealing the costume while changing into Superman.
Wein would always have that scene in all of his Superman
stories.
Many of the X-Men characters Wein created will be
soon returning to theater screens. Another of his creations,
Swamp Thing, recently appeared in the animated film Batman
and Harley Quinn
