FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE SUKKAH

When the Conservative Movement was founded in the early 1900s in theUnited States, the Movement’s founder, Solomon Schechter, referred to it as“catholic Israel.”

I put the “c” of catholic is small case so you would understand that Schechter wasn’ttalking about the Catholic religion. Rather, he was using the word in its less-knownform, meaning “all-inclusive.” In creating the Conservative Movement, Schechterwanted to form a big sukkah, if you will, where every Jew in America would find aplace to dwell.

In our attempt to create an accepting, embracing, inclusive Jewish community atCongregation Beth Shalom, we too are trying to stay true to Solomon Schechter’soriginal vision for our Conservative Movement. We want to make our metaphoricalsukkah wide enough so that whether you are gay or straight, an empty-nester or ablended family, old or young, a davener or a kibbitzer, intermarried or FFB or a Jew byChoice – you will be at home here.

Every subcommittee of the Board of Directors welcomes your input. You can email our president, Karin Karel [email protected] and she can plug you in based on your talents and interest. The best way to find your way under the sukkah, to really feel welcomed by the community, is to get involved, to get someskin in the game. I am looking for congregants to attend our August 2014 Israel Trip, to Mentor, to Volunteer with theHomeless, to become Foster or Respite Parents. If any of these social action and Israel programs sound interesting, I amreached at [email protected] or 302-654-4462 ext. 11.

Meanwhile, please let us really join together under our community sukkah, on Friday night, October 5, for a Shabbatdinner at the synagogue (details later in this Kol Shalom) or Saturday night, for Havdalah at my family’s sukkah, onOctober 6th, starting at 7:00pm. For the Havdalah, we are asking you to bring your best home made deserts, while wewill provide fresh veggies, hummus and tahina, healthy fruit and cheese, hot cider, and Israeli wine. Following Havdalah,we will put on a good old-fashioned kumsitz, singing some of our most beloved Israeli folk songs (and maybe someAmerican ones as well). You can find us just off Mt. Lebanon Road, at 611 Berwick Rd., in Edenridge.

Come join us under our sukkat shalom, our tabernacle of peace, as we make room for you under an ever-expansive,inclusive sukkah.

T ransition, for the most part, is a difficult process. At Congregation Beth Shalom, we recentlywent through a rather lengthy transition process as we said goodbye to Cantor Ruth Ross andhello to Cantor Elisa Abrams. We were very fortunate to have many individuals who

volunteered their time and efforts with this transition. The Board of Directors and the ExecutiveCommittee, spent many, many hours performing their entrusted duties. However, there were anumber of non-Board member congregants who volunteered to assist the Congregation in what weknew would be a difficult, and at times very emotional process. We want to thank and acknowledgethe following individuals for all that they did on behalf of and for the benefit of our Congregation:

OUR SYNAGOGUEMY JOURNEY TO CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM

My journey began twenty-seven years ago in Los Angeles. Perhaps it was mybeautifully diverse background that inspired me to want to live my lifeglorifying G-d through Jewish music and learning. Let me explain...

My mother was born in Havana, Cuba and generations ago, her ancestors came from Spain.During the Spanish Inquisition, they fled to Turkey, and eventually made their way toCuba. When Fidel Castro entered the scene in Cuba, my grandfather along with many otherJewish Cuban men left Havana in search of work in New York City, foreseeing what wasabout to happen to their beloved Cuba. Recently, my grandfather explained how heart-breaking this task was, so much so, that those fellow Jews who left Cuba cried as they left,fearing it would be the last time they would set eyes on the home they loved so dearly.Sadly this became a reality for many of those who fled. When my grandfather found workin a factory in the garment district, he sent for my grandmother, aunt, and mother. Theywere fortunate to be able to leave, as painful as it was. They said goodbye to their tropicalparadise for a big, gloomy, New York City. Eventually, they made their way to LosAngeles.

My father was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His parents fled Nazi Europe and made a home for their family inArgentina, only to learn that the Nazis had followed them after the war had ended. Their life in Buenos Aires was one ofwealth and luxury, and although everything seemed to be going right, they were plagued by anti-Semitism. So, when theywoke up with swastikas painted across the front of their Buenos Aires home, they knew they had to leave their wealthylifestyle and move elsewhere, leaving everything behind. They literally decided to flip a coin between Los Angeles andMexico City, two cities with thriving Latin Jewish communities, and Los Angeles won. They became American citizens andnever turned back.

Being a Latin Jew adds what I like to think of as an additional dimension to my identity. Being a Latin Jew of SephardicAND Ashkenazic roots means often being called a mutt, or hybrid, or my personal favorite, an “Ashkephard”. It meanslearning Spanish before English as a baby and then thinking in a combination of Spanish, English, and Hebrew as I gotolder. It means having Passover seders in Ladino with Spanglish conversations mixed in. It means walking in to my Cubangrandparents` house on Rosh Hashanah (which they pronounce as one word, “Roshanah” with a rolled “r”) and beinggreeted by the phrase, para muchos anyos, literally meaning for many years, instead of l`shanah tovah. It means recallingsweet memories of my Argentinian grandmother holding both my twin sister and me in her arms, calling us her shaynamaidelen or my Argentinian grandfather saying he was determined to live to see our b`not mitzvah, even if it meant hewould have to be transported in an ambulance. Being a Latin Jew means sometimes making sacrifices and compromises atthe dinner table. On occasion, Cuban black bean soup, chimichurri, or fried plantains replace matzah ball soup, lox, orchopped liver. Being Latin and Jewish means greeting other Latin Jews with the phrase, Shabbah Shalom on Shabbat,instead of the typical ShabbaT Shalom, simply a pronunciation difference that we laugh about in my family. On a dancefloor, I could easily feel inspired to dance a horah, tango, or salsa. Being Latin and Jewish means listening to old recordingsof the Sephardic vocal legend, Shoshana Damari, or getting teary eyed at the memory of holding my Argentiniangrandmother`s hand tightly when I was a little girl as she sang God Bless America at the top of her lungs, meaning everyword of it with all her heart. After all, it was because of America that her family escaped the Nazis.

When I think of my Jewish journey, I find it impossible to do such a task without referring to this unique part of myidentity. Since I was born, my Jewish and Latin identities have merged together like one within me, thanks to my parents`determination to make sure that I never lost my roots. My background defines so much of who I am on so many levels, andI am forever grateful that my family went through what they did so that I could be here today to tell you all about myjourney. In essence, I believe it is my rich background that laid the foundation for my Jewish journey. Both sides of myfamily worked so hard to keep their Jewish identities, and their stories have moved me, so much so, that I have decided todevote my life to glorifying G-d through the musical traditions of our ancestors.

Before I tell your a little bit more about my journey, I will say that I am incredibly lucky that I have been on this journeywith my twin sister, Shoshana, who was also recently invested as Cantor and Education Director and recently began servingCongregation Ahavath Sholom in Fort Worth, Texas.

I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley andattended the Adat Ari El religious school. I was named byRabbi Moshe J. Rothblum. My parents sent me to anorthodox nursery school where I excelled in Judaics, butespecially Jewish music. My teachers would send homenotes saying that I was always enthusiastic when it cametime for singing Jewish songs in class. When I was eightyears old, Cantor Ira S. Bigeleisen, my greatest teacher andmentor, taught me to sing. I remember gazing at him in awefrom my seat in the sanctuary each week during Shabbatservices. At that young age, I was thoroughly intrigued bythe role of the cantor. There was something about his voiceand the music he sang that moved me. It struck a chordwithin me, and I knew that this was something I wanted tomake a part of my life. This was something special, not justa fleeting phase. It wasn’t long afterlearning to sing that I joined thesynagogue’s Youth Choir, where I fell inlove with every aspect of the music I wastaught. Rehearsals soon became thehighlight of my week and before I knewit, I was leading parts of services with themelodies I had learned. Cantor Bigeleisenrecognized my love for everything relatedto Jewish music and instinctively took meunder his wing. It was no accident thatCantor Bigeleisen planned our b’notmitzvah for the weekend of ShabbatShira, the Shabbat of Song, the specialShabbat when we chant the story of thecrossing of the Red Sea and the specialsong the Israelites sang in celebration ofbeing brought to freedom by God throughMoses. I remember learning the ancientshira trope and chanting the Song of theSea before the congregation. As the kahal,the congregation, rose, it was as if we had been standing onthe banks of the sea singing this celebratory song with theIsraelites and the congregants were my fellow Israelites.The famous Shira melody of our Jewish antiquity broughtthe Exodus to life for me. Following the b’not mitzvah,Cantor Bigeleisen offered me a job as a b’nei mitzvah tutor,and of course, I accepted this job offer. Throughout highschool I became more and more involved with leadingservices and chanting Torah on a regular basis, and I joineda small Sephardic choir whose purpose was to preserve themusic of the Ladino tradition. In the eleventh grade, CantorBigeleisen invited me to sing in a cantorial concert that wasbeing held at Adat Ari El. Cantors from all over the countryflew in to sing at this concert and I was honored to havebeen invited to share the stage with these renown cantors.That night I sang and schmoozed with the greats of thecantorial world, and when the night was over, I was in

(Continued from page 4) tears. I was in awe of how happy and excited I was thatnight, because I realized that this was what I truly wantedto pursue, more than anything in this world. I had alwaysloved and felt a strong connection to Jewish music, but itwasn’t until that night that I had realized that I wanted to bea cantor. I was beside myself with gratitude and happytears, and following this pivotal moment, I made it mybusiness to study music and Judaics in college at theUniversity of California, Santa Barbara in preparation forapplying to Cantorial School at the Jewish TheologicalSeminary of America.

In the winter of 2007, I was sitting in the cantorial schooldean’s office after an intense day of interviews, auditions,and entrance exams when he told me that I had beenaccepted into the H.L. Miller Cantorial School. Again, thetears came, this time, because I had achieved a huge goal inthe direction of reaching my dream of becoming a cantor, a

minister of Jewish music who follows inthe footsteps of the Levites of the templetimes and upholds the Jewish musicaltradition that has been passed down l’dorva’dor, from generation to generation, andwho paves the way in creating new andinnovative forms of Jewish music of thepresent time all in the name of hiddurmitzvah, the beautification of mitzvot .

I spent the first year of my program inJerusalem. When I returned to the States, Iadded on a second master’s degree inJewish Education because I have come torealize that my job as hazzan will be to bea Jewish educator- whether from the bimaor on the floor with a classroom full ofkindergarteners. I could not imaginepursuing the cantorate without acquiring astrong foundation in Jewish education.

Over the past five years, I have had theprivilege and honor of serving as student cantor andeducator in a myriad of Jewish communities around thecountry including Park Avenue Synagogue (New YorkCity), Temple Beth Am (Los Angeles), B’nei Jeshurun(New York City), East End Temple (New York City),Sutton Place Synagogue (New York City), and Cedar CrestRetirement Community (Pompton Plains, NJ). Myexperiences officiating at religious services, life-cycleevents, and teaching in these dynamic communities hasbeen truly invaluable.

This year, I spent many weeks traveling around the countryinterviewing for Cantorial and combined Cantorial/Education Director positions. For a while, I was traveling toa new city every weekend and I certainly learned a greatdeal. In the end, I was lucky enough to receive three job

offers in three different states. That being said, my decision was not a difficult one in the end. From the moment I first spokewith the interviewing committee, I felt comfortable and at home. When I arrived in Wilmington for my audition weekend, Iknew from the first moment that this was where I needed to be. Rabbi Michael and the entire community treated me as if Iwere family. While I visited many beautiful communities this year, I believe that for me it was about finding the right fit,and I knew in my gut Beth Shalom was going to be my new home. Thank you for inviting me to join this beautiful anddynamic community as both Cantor and Education Director. Now that I am here, I am so excited to lead our community inJewish song, meaningful prayer, and life-long Jewish learning opportunities.

A few weeks ago, my long-time boyfriend, Loren, proposed to me and, of course, I said “yes!” Loren is in the process oflooking for work so that he can join our community more permanently. Loren has been there for me as my personalcheerleader over the past four years and I am so grateful that he has and will continue to be my partner on this journey.

Looking back over the past 27 years, my journey to the cantorate has seemed so long, while, on the other hand, it seems asthough so much has happened in the blink of an eye. I can’t believe I have reached the point where I get to wake up everymorning and do what I love and have dreamed of doing my entire life. I feel incredibly lucky for this and I thank God everyday that my Jewish journey has led me to Congregation Beth Shalom.

IN OUR HEBREW SCHOOL

We’re off to a great start! CBS Hebrew School met for the first time on Sunday, September 9th. We opened thenew school year with a Welcome Assembly where we sang, got to know each other, took a school-wide photo,heard the shofar blown, and recited a shehechiyanu, thanking G-d for bringing us together for the first time this

year. Following the assembly, each student decorated a kippah (skull cap) that he or she will wear each time they enterreligious school. This year, both boys and girls are required to wear kippot in Hebrew School. Kippot serve as a reminderthat G-d is above us and that we should act b’tzelem elohim, in the image of G-d.

During this first session, students experienced not only the sounds of the shofar, but had the opportunity to taste a traditionalRosh Hashanah favorite - tapuchim u’dvash or apples and honey. Students recited the appropriate blessing over apples andhoney and learned about the significance of eating these foods on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

During class students filled out “All About Me” sheets and I took photos of each student. I will be creating a Hebrew Schoolexhibit with these “All About Me” sheets and photos. Please stop by in a few weeks to see our “All About Me” exhibit!

Walking through the Hebrew School, I could nothelp but smile at the sweet sounds of gigglingchildren and learning taking place. This is one ofthe sweetest blessings in life and I pray this isonly the beginning of a long journey of growthand learning in these children’s lives. It is greatto have all of your children back! Please askthem to tell you about all of the interesting thingsthey are learning in their classes!

On Sunday, September 9 more than fifty people gatheredin the Beth Shalom social hall to enjoy a light brunch,schmooze and delight in the insanely delicious taste of thekugels prepared by our seven kugel chefs. Spectatorsvoted for their favorites, and while the numbers were close,The Kugel Mania 2012 People’s Choice Award was givento Team Fruchtman!

A lthough the Norwegians may dispute ChristopherColumbus as “the Discoverer of the New World,”October 12 is set aside as a day to honor him. But,

was he Jewish? Join us on Friday, October 12 at 8:00pmas Rabbi Beals discusses the issue and Cantor Abramsshares with us the melodies of the Sephardi tradition, mostnotably from the Sephardi Jewish Community of Italy.Here are some highlights of the history of the Jews of Italy:

160 BCE - two envoys from Judah Maccabee arrive inRome.

70 CE - Jerusalem falls to Romans, the Golden Menorah,along with 20,000 Jewish slaves are taken.

100 CE - the first synagogue in Western Europe is built inOstia, the Port of Rome.

Between the 9th and 13th Centuries - 50,000 Jews lived inItaly; lives and fortunes in constant turmoil –Jews arewelcomed, expelled, rise to great prominence, becomeeconomically plundered, live in estates, restricted toghettos. Jews are merchants and traders, advised thearistocracy, targeted as Christ killers, and so forth.

1484 - the Soncino press, founded by Jews, is established inSoncino, Italy and becomes the oldest Jewish printing pressin the world.

1492 - Refugees from theSpanish inquisition flee toItaly and establish theItalian Sephardi community.

1516 - the Ghetto (Foundry)is established in Venice.

1870 - the Ghetto of Romeis abolished, Jews gainemancipation.

1904 - The Great Synagogue of Rome is built.

1930s and 1940s - Prior to World War II, the Jewishpopulation was 50,000. Initially, Italy resisted the Nazideportation of Jews; later 7,500 are sent to their deaths.Nazis used the Great Synagogue of Florence as a stable.(Books from the library were smuggled out, sent tochurches, and returned after the War.)

2000s – Today, the Jewish population is 28,000. There areover ninety recognized synagogues (ten are Sephardic) andthere are many museums, attractions, and historical sitesattributed to the Jewish people.
