ANATWY OF A MEDAL -- THE i3RITISH MILITARY MEDAL was t h e outstanding nw-lismatic d i s p l a y a t t h e 1969 Canadian N m i s n a t i c Associat ion Conven- t i o n a t Toronto, but was d i s q u a l i f i e d fro^ conpe t i t ion on thc t e c h n i c a l i t y of a n ovePsize d i sp lay case. This d i s q u a l i f i c a t i o n was, of course, e n t i r e l y j u s t i f i e d b u t frora ny viewpoint i t d id seen unfor tunate t h a t no award or honour- ab le enti ti on was nzde t o John S. Newnan f o r hav- ing had such an excel len$ e x h i b i t made up f o r viewing a t the Convention as a non-conpetitve d isp lay . Even nore th , a f e e l i n g so r ry f o r Jolm Newnan, however, I ax more than a l i t t l e peeved a t nyse l f f o r having p roc ras t ina ted so nuch a t t h e Convention t h a t I took no no tes on t h i s d i s p l a y o ther than t o j o t down the t i t l e .

It has been rly good fo r tune t o add t h i s valuable r e f e r - ence book t o ny n w i s ~ l a t i c l i b r a r y . Or ig ina l ly i ssued f o r hone use o.KLY, they c i r cu la ted u n t i l withdrawn i n 1887 even though n o t n in ted a f t e r 1856, but i n the i n t e r i n had a chequered career , p a r t i c u l a r l y the e.ru?lier i s sues .

The coins were no t actu,dly i ssued f o r Colonial use u n t i l 1888 I

b u t i t i s o f f i c i a l l y recorded t h a t i n 1834 and 1842 c o n s i g ~ e r t t s of g r o a t s were sent t o Ceylon, A t t h i s s tage Ceylon had progressed f ron t h e Ceylon Governrxnt i s s u e s t o t h e Rix Dol la r s ,and the supporting 2, 1 and $ s t i v e r coins.

Also i n 1840 a l o c a l proc1x:ation i n B r i t i s h Gui,ana f ixed the a:zrlount a t which t h e Dutch Guilder was t o c i r c u l a t e a t Sterlinp: wi th the ob jec t doubt less , of g roa t s being accepted as-equiva lent t o t h e 2 Guilder or "1 bitI1.
