Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church
The Italian Parish of Indianapolis
B envenuto! Welcome to Holy
Rosary Church! Whether you
are a lifelong parishioner, a first-
time visitor to our parish, or
someone in between, we are
grateful you have joined us today.
Founded in 1909 as the Italian
Parish of Indianapolis, we continue
to serve as the parish home of
people of Italian heritage and also
embrace all Catholics in union with
Rome, including those devoted to
the Traditional Latin Mass
(Extraordinary Form) and the
Anglican Usage of the Roman Rite.
In the words of our founding
pastor, Msgr. Marino Priori:
“The church is the temple of the
Lord, the gate of heaven. Come
after a week of earthly cares, after
so much toil, after so many
sorrows, after so much pain. Rest
your limbs. Regenerate your spirit
at the sources of grace. Raise your
mind to God; thank Him for the
benefits received through His
creation and in daily life; ask for
strength so you can win all of life’s
struggles, and be able to possess
the fruits of redemption.”

MASS INTENTIONS: The standard stipend for Masses in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis is $10. Requests should indicate whether people are living
or deceased, and must be typed or written legibly. We will attempt to honor requested dates, but cannot guarantee they will be available. We recom-
mend such requests be made at least eight months in advance. Except in the year of an individual’s death, no more than 12 Saturday evening/
Sunday Masses may be requested or offered for the repose of his/her soul in a calendar year. Intentions that cannot be offered here within a year of
reception are, at the pastor’s discretion, subject to being sent to the archdiocesan Mission Office. Make checks payable to Holy Rosary Church.
Until further notice, due to the City of Indianapolis’ mandate that attendance at religious services is restricted to 25 persons or less, all daily and Sunday Masses inside Holy Rosary Church are closed to the general pub-lic. Attendance will be by invitation only through a lottery of registered parishioners.
Announcements
The parish office will be closed Monday for the
Memorial Day holiday.
Due to the mandate by the City of Indianapolis that
attendance at religious services in Marion County is
restricted to no more than 25 people, all daily and
Sunday Masses inside Holy Rosary Church are
closed to the general public. Invitations to attend
Mass will be issued by a lottery system to registered
parishioners; we will contact those who are selected,
so please don’t call the office to inquire about or seek
an invitation. EXCEPTION: There are no attendance
restrictions on outdoor services; therefore, if the ad-
vance weather forecast is favorable, Fr. McCarthy
will celebrate weekday Mass in the courtyard and
Saturday evening/Sunday Masses in a parking lot.
Proper social distancing will still be necessary.
Archbishop Thompson has dispensed the faithful
from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass until Aug.
15.
The archbishop requests that all Catholics in the
Archdiocese of Indianapolis attend Mass and other
services ONLY in their home parishes until June
15 so that each parish may better control attendance
and communicate in advance with those who will
attend.
At Sunday Masses, there will be a basket in the
center aisle of church to collect your weekly dona-
tions to the parish. Please have your donations
ready when you arrive to church, as this basket will
be removed shortly after Mass begins.
Please pray for our sick and shut-in friends:

T his week we celebrated Ascension Thursday (Sunday). We look(ed) up to watch Christ ascend and hold our gaze
in anticipation of the Holy Spirit descending. What do these mysteries reveal to us of the Divine plan? Why is
the Holy Spirit sent to dwell in us?
For the very same reason that the Holy Spirit descended on the Blessed Virgin Mary and dwelt in her, to form the
Word of God in us, to form us into christs. The Holy Spirit is constantly trying, like a sculptor, artist or craftsman to
create in us another Jesus. Of course, there is only one Jesus. There is only one perfect image of God the Father in hu-
man nature. However, each one of us has the potential and, in fact, the calling and predestination to reflect Jesus to the
world in a particular way.
That reality happens concurrently in the eternal now of God and the finite now of the moment we are living in. At
this moment, you and I have the potential to be formed and shaped by the Holy Spirit into a particular image of Christ
that reveals in this moment — and perhaps in future moments — the face of Jesus to the world, including revealing
Him to yourself and myself.
This is the work of the Holy Spirit, to use all of the physical, material, human and divine resources in any moment to
sculpt in us a particular perfection and revelation of Christ. And in God’s providence, in His great love and mercy, the
formation of Christ in each of us has the poten-
tial (but only with our cooperation) to happen in
every moment.
The Holy Spirit takes into account every as-
pect and every minute detail of the person and
the circumstance in which He is working. The
Holy Spirit can and does use whatever
“materials” are at hand. He can start with the most pure and perfect block of carrera marble, or with a pile of dis-
carded refuse, and still in that moment and those circumstances create a perfected revelation of Jesus to the world and
to each self, as long as the one necessary piece is present: a willing soul.
[There are many analogies (scriptural and otherwise) for how each of us plays a particular part in the Church and in
the revelation of Christ to the world. Saint Paul’s famous analogy of the Church as the body and Christ as the head is
probably the most prominent. I, however, prefer the vine and the branches understood in the context of a garden. So
much of the Paschal Mystery takes place in or near a garden.] Not that our unwillingness can frustrate the ultimate
Divine Providence, even the greatest of gardens needs compost and fertilizer. We can merely frustrate the work of the
Holy Spirit in us. As long as there is enough green left, we can be grafted onto the True Vine by the Holy Spirit and
nurtured into the most fruitful of branches. So if you feel like every leaf and stem has fallen away from you, and you
are isolated and alone, surrounded in a decaying rotting mess of your own and others’ corruption, the Holy Spirit, with
the smallest of whimpers for help from the rotting, dying soul, can tear you from the filth, prune and graft you back
onto the Tree of Life, and, in the composting remains of your past life, make fertile ground for future works of grace.
The Resurrection reveals not only our future glory but the possibility of present glory as well. Not the glory of the
world but the glory of the saints. Objectively speaking Mother Teresa was a short, withered, wrinkled, hunched over
troll of a figure. Yet she shone brightly as a beacon of Christ’s charity in the world, and her “beauty” converted many
a soul, even as she herself languished under the multiple daily prunings the Holy Spirit, like a master sculptor pound-
ing, chiseling, grinding and polishing to perfection, exacted on her body and soul.
Christ ascends to heaven so that we can be formed into other christs. Our purpose in life is to embrace, welcome,
submit to the Holy Spirit and His Work. This is not always easy.
It is true that sometimes in desperation it is relatively easy to submit to the sharp instruments of conversion, when
anything seems better than the filth and squalor of our soul, but more often we cling to the old man in us. How much
harder can it be to submit to the daily, hourly or even constant picking and pruning necessary to bring the perfect
flower to fruition? Yet only when we open our arms with Christ on the Cross and willingly expose our hearts and
souls to the Holy Spirit and His Work will we bloom and bear much fruit.
Why is the Holy Spirit sent to dwell in us?

Prayers for our war dead express gratitude for their sacrifice
T he city’s restriction on Mass attendance not-
withstanding, today we reach another level of
joy on our journey back to “normal.” Small groups
of parishioners are back in the pews as Fr.
McCarthy offers Sunday Masses upon our altar.
We give thanks to God
for this blessing, and
ask Him to move
hearts and minds in
such a way that soon even more souls may gather
together at la Chiesa del Santo Rosario.
Not to be overlooked amid this ecclesiastical mo-
ment is the secular yet also holy observation of Me-
morial Day. We, following the scriptural example
set by Judas Maccabeus, pray for our beloved war
dead to atone for their sins (2 Mac 12:38-46). Often
applied to fallen soldiers and sailors, Our Lord’s
words, “Greater love has no man than this, that a
man lay down his life for his friends” (Jn 15:13), re-
mind us to be grateful for the ultimate sacrifice
they made in service of our country.
As an armchair historian, I have noted that patri-
otism and the sound of war drums may attract men
to join the military; but once they are in the muck,
blood, confusion and terror of battle, lofty thoughts
of “duty, honor, country” tend to fall from mind.
Rather, many simply fight, and die, for the men
beside them — a pure, unselfish love for their im-
mediate neighbors, their comrades-in-arms.
Especially moving are stories of heroism by those
who go into battle without weapons. For example,
five Catholic chaplains have been awarded the
Medal of Honor. You can read about them in this
article, and watch a half-hour video about one of
my favorite potential saints, Servant of God Fr.
Emil Kapaun.
