Flute (doubling piccolo and alternate flute) Oboe Clarinet (doubling Bass Clarinet) Alto Saxophone Bassoon Trumpet I Trumpet II French Horn Trombone Bass Trombone Accordion Piano Percussion I Marimba, Xylophone, 2 Tom-toms (low and high), Bass Drum Percussion II Vibraphone, Tenor Drum, Brake Drum, Triangle, Claves Single Strings Violin I Violin II Viola Violoncello Double Bass Performance notes: 1. Flute player doubles on an “Alternate Flute”- an additional C flute with the head joint pulled out as to create an
intonation of a quarter step flat. 2. Alto saxophone (bars 123-142) and Clarinet (Bars 238-257) should play each articulation with a different fingering
as to produce a slightly different intonation for each repeated pitch (the effect should be that some pitches will be in tune, some will be slightly flat, and some will be slightly sharp).

Program Note In response to a question about how he approached writing, the great sportswriter Red Smith once famously answered, “All you do is sit down and open a vein.” As a composer, I’ve often thought of this remark and how appropriately it reflects the unfolding of any personal creative act. Such a reflection expresses both the ease with which one reveals oneself, while simultaneously describing an act (opening veins) from which there is no going back – an honest exposure of one’s most personal ideas and feelings, a revelation of one’s life blood. Opening Veins, then, is a work which takes Red Smith’s famous remark to heart, to reveal myself in ways previously not attempted, to expose a certain vulnerability, to open my veins.
