All fruit trees prefer quality, well-drained soil and a minimum of six hours of sunshine. Add composted manure to your existing soil and ensure that it’s certified “Compost Quality Alliance.” Add the equivalent of one 20-kg bag of compost to existing soil or, if you have clay for soil, add two or three 20-kg bags of triple mix to the hole and dispose of the stuff you dug out. Dig the hole about a metre wide and about 60 centimetres deep.
