Luminescent graphene was synthesized using easily available starting materials and simple technique.
A shift in the photoluminescence from 611 nm (Eu2O3) to 618 nm is due the complexation of Eu3+ with graphene was established.
Optical bifunctionality of the luminescent graphene was studied.
