IFoundthatDavidMcCandless’workhelpedmefindaninterestingdirectiontogoin,whenitcametodesigningmyInfoGraphics.Hisuseofcolourstoodoutformealongwithhisimagery.Iwantedtosteerclearofthestandard,dullandboringgraphsandchartsandtrytocreatesomethingthatrepresentswhatdataIamlookinginto.Itmakesitmoreaestheticallypleasingtotheeye. His “LeftWing&RightWing”GraphicsinspiredmetocreateasimpleyetclosereplicationofaniPod,asMcCandlesshasdonewithbuildings,peopleetc. AsyoucanseewithmysketchesIstartedoffwithdoodlingoutgeneralgraphsandcharts,butrealisedtheyweren’tthatinteresting.SofromlookingatMcCandless’workandmycontinuousdoodlingofideasImanagetocomeupwithconceptsthatIenjoyed.

From visiting the Pitt RiversMuseumIrealisedthevariouswaysyoucanorganiseandcatergorizeyourobjects.AndinspiredotherwaysIgotgroupdifferentobjects.HadthisbeensomethingIsawpriortoalreadydecidinguponmydataImayhavefounddifferentinformationtodisplay.

IusedIllustratortocreatemytwoInfoGraphicsandalthoughittookquiteawhiletofinish,Ireallyenjoyedtheprocess,asIamquiteusedtoworkingwithIllustrator.Itwasfairlystraight forward in tryingtocreatethestyleofdesignIwasaimingfor,simpleyetbeingabletodisplaynumerousdata.

Playingaroundwithideasforpresentingthedata.Startingoffwithgeneralgraphsandchartsandthenmovingontoamoregraphicapproachwithusingimageryrelatingto the data I have. HavingthethemearoundiPodswasmyfavouriteidea,soIjustkeptdrawingthemuntilIfoundthebestoutcomes.IquitelikedthesketchwherethedatawasshowninthescreenoftheiPod,asifyouwerescrollingthroughyouriPodjustlookingatdata.

Themappingideastuckforquiteabit,Icouldn’tshakeitfrommyhead.Thefirstwasintendedtobemoreofatree,butIfoundthatitgotabittoclutteredwiththeartistnamesandsongtitles.Itriedmakingspacebyinvertingtheshapeofthetree.Butitendeduplookingtoomuchlikeatimelineformyliking. Thenextoneisamorebasedaroundthebrancheswiththeheadphonesliningupmuchbetterinmyeyes.Itjustneededtolooklessboxlike.

Thesehadamoretreelikefeeltothemandtomeitstartedlookinglikeitcouldbeaposterforagigandlesslikeaschematicordiagram,whichIquiteliked.
