• Industrial revolution- Transition from farming and cottage industries
(to) mechanisation and mass production- People moved from the countryside to towns in
search of employment.

especially for gallery Oldham• The golden sheeps haeds are a symbol
of wealth made from the land and in particular the wool industry
• The slagheap is a reference to industrial waste and residue
The rural idyll
• This is a new romanticised view of the countryside
• The industrial revolution prompted mass migration and rapid expansion of towns and cities
• Composition-painting is ruined by the central feature (a factory,) the colours are angry (red,) dirty (greys,) unorganised and could represent blood and the effects of pollution
