PROJECT TITLE: Implementation of HIV demand creation of HCT & PMTCT in Amuwo-odofin LGA of Lagos State
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY AND HIGHLIGHTS:
This project is a three (3) months prevention Plus Intervention project with community outreach HCT
services and PMTCT implemented by Life Link Organisation in Amuwo-odofin, funded by AIDS Prevention
Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) as a sub Recipient to NACA implemented Global Fund (GF) Consolidated Round 9
HIV grant in Lagos State . This is a report of a three months project which started from April 2016 to June
2016.
The project is to improve access to HTC and PMTCT services and to retain HIV positive pregnant women in
HIV care during pregnancy through community based approaches and to actively linked HIV positive clients
to care and treatment centres in APIN identified facility.
Objective:
a) To create awareness and demand for HIV/AIDS services in the various communities
b) To scale up access to HTC and PMTCT services in the general population.
c) To actively link HIV positive clients to care and treatment centres.

ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED IN THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT
PLANNING MEETING
A two day planning meeting was held on the 20th -21st April, 2016 to plan for the activities to
be carried out in the Global Fund (GF) Consolidated Round 9 HIV grant. During these
meetings, procedures and strategies for the implementation were discussed to plan activities
at the various community identified. Advocacy and sensitization visits to community leaders,
gatekeepers, Holy Family Hospital and Medical officer of Health (MOH), AIDS Action
Managers and men/women leaders Association in First gate, Mazamaza, Agboju community,
Ibasa Island and Ibese were carried out.
Other issues discussed were how the intervention at the community level will develop
linkages and referrals to APIN supported sites (Holy Family Hospital, Festac, Lagos) for care
and treatment.
ADVOCACY VISIT:
Advocacy visit was carried out to Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Medical officer of Health ,
AIDS Action Managers, Community Stakeholders and the Men/Women Leader Association to
inform and solicit their firm support in the Project.. With the commencement of advocacy visits
and community mobilization, the various target groups came out for HTC intervention and PMTCT
in their respective quarters.
MAPPING AND IDENTIFICATION OF SORTED LOCATIONS FOR HCT:
As part of the activities carried out in implementing the HCT programme at the different
community identified by LLO, the following Sported locations were identified, the Market
Women/Men Association in Amuwo-odofin. Letter of introduction of Life Link Organisation
were sent to identified LGAs , the TBAs and Holy Family Hospital for the implementation of the
Global Fund (GF) Consolidated Round 9

RESULTS/ACHIEVEMENTS DISAGGREGATED BY PROGRAM , MAY2016 The total Number of Target Population reached APIN Global Fund (GF) Consolidated Round 9 HIV
grant in Lagos State project with LLO from the month MAY to JUNE 2016. HCT is 560 ( 320 Males
and 240 Females). PMTCT: 131 Females.

COMMUNITY HCT OUTREACH PROGRAMME IN AMUWO-ODOFIN.
Community Outreach programme was organized by LLO in Amuwo-odofin community to ensure HTC
services is provided. LLO engaged volunteers that were trained by APIN and LSACA to provide HIV
counseling and testing services to the General Population and to facilitate linkages and referrals to
supported health facilities indentified by APIN in Amuwo-odofin.
The involvement of LACA, Traditional Birth attendants ( Agbomola TBA, Baba Ajimutea TBA, Iya Agan
TBA , Mama Ada TBA and Ibese TBA), community group and stakeholders have played vital role in HIV/
AIDS prevention activities, which include helping the people of the community to understand the
message in their local language; the need for them (community members) to come out to seek the free
health services render to them by LLO team. Condom demonstration provided by APIN to LLO was one
method used during the Community outreach Programme.
PREVENTION FROM MOTHER TO CHILD TRANSMISSION (PMTCT)
As part of LLO activities carried out in this reporting period, Pregnant women were our key target
population which we reached with PMTCT. The expected mothers during their Antenatal program at the
TBA were provided with free HIV counselling and testing and the provision of psycho-social and
emotional support.
LLO with support from APIN reached Traditional Birth Attendants from Amuwo-odofin (Ibeshe Island,
Ibasa Island, Chief Ajimutea Tradol Medical Clinic and Agbomola); they are selected from LLO sites to
support the project. The TBA reached out to expected mothers who attend their antenatal clinic; these
women meet and discuss issue regarding their health and their unborn child and also discuss the
following issues at hand.

How to disclose their HIV status to partners if positive and others.
How to confront stigma and discrimination
Adherence to the PMTCT process including ART
Infant feeding options
How to prevent unintended pregnancy in the future through family planning
Safer sexual practices
Linkages with other programs and services to strengthen women’s health and decision
Making (e.g., nutritional support, income-generating activities and skills training)
Living positively.
In the process of their antenatal clinic meeting, LLO volunteers also carried out free HIV testing
among the pregnant and free Behaviour Change Communication materials were distributed to
target the pregnant women.

REFERRAL AND FOLLOW UP OF HIV + CLIENTS:
As part of LLO’s activities to track HIV + Clients, Referral and Follow up visit were carried out
during the project implementations. During Follow Up, LLO communicated with clients in the
various locations. The HIV positive clients were referred to APIN support facility.
