PARTNERS & FRIENDS WELCOME
GUEST SPEAKER
Dallas BoothThe Royal Commission into Financial Services
Dallas is Chief Executive Officer at the National Insurance Brokers Association of Australia. The Association followed the Royal Commission very closely, and made a submission to the Royal Commissioner in relation to insurance broking.
The main role of the Association is to represent the interests of insurance brokers to governments, Members of Parliament, ASIC and other agencies. Dallas has been in this role for 8 years.
Prior to NIBA, Dallas ran the James Hardie asbestos compensation trust for a number of years, worked on behalf of insurance companies at the Insurance Council of Australia, and worked in the NSW Government overseeing compulsory third party insurance. Prior to that he was a policy adviser to a number of NSW Attorneys General.
Dallas is admitted as a barrister at law in NSW, although he is not a practising lawyer. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
In the presentation, Dallas will provide an overview of the background to the Royal Commission into Misconduct in Banking and Financial Services, the key findings of the Royal Commissions, and observations on what the Royal Commission means for banks, insurance companies, and financial advisers in the future.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT
Thank you all the members who kept the club going while I was on holidays.
At the last meeting the speaker was Marilyn Kenney, the District Chair for ROMAC. She spoke on the role that ROMAC plays in the medical services provided for children with appearance or birth defects from the Oceanic area.
The fun run was also in this period .It was very well organised and was supported by past and present members. The numbers of runners was disappointing.
Unfortunately it coincided with the school holidays.
Thank you to Michael for all your efforts, especially as it coincided with a busy time at his work.
At the next meeting the speaker will be Dallas Booth, from the National Insurance Brokers Association of Australia. Dallas will be speaking about the Royal Commission into Financial Services. It would be good to have a large number at the meeting as he is a very good speaker.
We have the Father’s day BBQ at Roseville Public School, and Bunnings BBQ coming up. Unfortunately the Bunnings BBQ falls on Father’s Day. We also have another Bunnings BBQ allocated later in October. It is important we make a good profit from Bunnings as we will need the funds to do all the things we want to, especially the youth activities.
There is a Rotary Foundation movie night in which we may participate with another club.
The golf day organization is well on the way. Chatswood’s profit will go to a dental team in East Timor. Our profit will go towards an organization that. provides machines that enables disabled people to play golf. The profit will be split between the two clubs in proportion to the net sponsorship and funds from the players. We therefore need sponsors . Contact Neil Howie or David Brand if you have any questions or ideas for sponsorship.
Richard GreenPresident.

Roseville Public School has requested our club again undertake the Father’s DayBreakfast BBQ at the school on Friday 30 August 2019.

Members assisting will need to be at the school by 6.30 am to commence set up and cooking. Finish should be around 9.00 am.

A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME?
The US city of Berkeley has officially gotten rid of all of its “manholes,” “policewomen” and “firemen”. All such commonly used words in city documents are now banned and must be replaced by more gender-neutral alternatives.
As such, common words such as;• “bondsman” will be replaced by the non-gendered term “bonds-person,”• “manhole” becomes “maintenance hole” • a “pregnant woman” will now be referred to as a “pregnant employee.” • “sorority” and “fraternity” replaced with “collegiate Greek system residence,” • “manpower” will be changed to “human effort.”• “Firemen” or “firewomen” will be replaced with “firefighters.”• personal pronouns — “he” or “she” — will be changed to the neutral gender
like “the attorney” or “the merchant.”
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 8th FUN RUN21 JULY 2019
Our Club Fun Runs commenced in 2012, and the 8th Fun Run on 21 July this year enjoyed another crisp morning and splendid sunny day.
Congratulations and appreciation to Mike Harrowell, and the assistance by Neil Howie, for the splendid job in the preparation, planning and organisation in a very well conducted event that ran without any known hitches. The pre-planning and preparation of all the signage, marshalling requirements and associated roles made for an enjoyable day, which most runners seemed to appreciate.
The number of starting participants, an overall total of 257, may have been down on that experienced in previous years, and 29 were registered but did not start.
On the following page are some statistics extracted from the Multi Sports Australia website showing various categories of participants in the 3 events, and the times they recorded.
Also following are some photos from the day, including the presentation of the female and male winners in the 3 event, by the Vice-President Greg Muldoon. Bags for security were provided free by Spotlight, Belrose, and Harris Farm and Di Jones Real Estate again provided some sponsorship.

At the Club Presidents Meeting in D9675 on Friday night and D9685 on Saturday morning details of this major World Polio Day event were presented.
The major outcomes are that this is an opportunity for you to achieve one of your goals for the Rotary citation: Hold an event to raise funds for, or to increase awareness of Rotary’s work toward polio eradication.By your participation in this event your Club will assist in the following:
Public Image: Help build awareness that this is the Number One Priority for Rotary.
Fundraising: We ask that, as a Club, that your Club contribution is $1950 ($10 per station) and that you encourage your members to personally support this fundraiser by contribution $195 ($1 per station).
Rotarian Engagement: Based on last year’s event this is a great opportunity for all members to ride together on the train for a time of their own determination as a fellowship activity and mix with Rotarians from other Clubs in the Greater Sydney area. We will also have representatives from two Districts in New Zealand riding with us for the whole event.

SOME RATHER UNIMPORTANT INFORMATION
AYERS ROCK/ULURU. Given this official dual name in 1993. The Rock was originally named by William Gosse on 19 July 1873, after the Chief Secretary of South Australia, Sir Henry Ayers. Gosse was the first European to climb the Rock, accompanied by an Afghan camel driver.
KINANYI/ MOUNT WELLINGTON. Given this official dual naming in 2013.The Mountain was previously named Mt Wellington in honour of the Duke of Wellington (but had many names before that). The name “KINANYI” has recently been trademarked by atleast 3 firms for hundreds of products ranging from whisky & beer to clothes, bags, stationery, and stubby holders.
KATI THANDA/LAKE AYRE. Named in 1840 in honour of Edward John Ayre, the first European to see it. In December 2012 it was officially changed to the combined name of Kati Thanda/Lake Ayre.
BETOOTA, In south-west Queensland,is Australia’s smallest ghost town with a current population of zero. The Betoota Hotel still stands, as does its petrol pump and phone box. Giving to the Rotary Foundation in the 2018-19 Rotary year.
(Summary of David Rand’s Report)
Overall we donated $US 542,048 to the Rotary Foundation this year. Clubs and individual Rotarians have given $A 764,000 in this last Rotary year. This figure was helped hugely by your generous support for the End Polio campaign, including a very generous bequest of $100,000 through Belrose Rotary, the contribution from Ride the Train organised by Mark and Dave Anderson from Rotary Beecroft, 5 screenings across the district of the Movie Bohemian Rhapsody in November. Our End Polio giving this last year was$A 244,000 against $A 80,000 in the previous year Unfortunately, our Annual Fund giving, which is fundamental to our ability to support club projects, both here and overseas, was down; $US 337,000 ($A 475,000) from $US 404,000 ($A 529,000) in 2017-18. Outside the Belrose bequest of $US 74,074, the three best donating clubs are the E-Club (US$ 67,599), Beecroft (US$ 42, 356), and Ryde ($US 20,332). Best Annual Fund giving clubs per capita were E-Club ($US 1458), Beecroft ($US 860), and North Sydney ($US 411). Thirteen of our clubs gave more than $US200 per head. Roseville Chase total giving was $5,674.48 (av per member $226.98) compared to a total of $8,616.50 for 2017/18. A donation was received from every club in our district. Our donations go to the engine-room of what Rotary is all about. The Rotary Foundation’s funds go almost entirely into doing good in the world with a world-leading ranking in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, integrity and low cost of operation. In particular it is the vehicle through which Rotary has made a huge and on-going commitment to ridding the world of Polio. It was also pleasing to see a growing number of clubs using Foundation funds to support their humanitarian projects using District and Global Grants. We would like more clubs to be active in applying for grants as they are a very efficient way for your club to enhance the money available to support your wonderful project work.
We look forward to all clubs continuing to give their generous support during this year ahead as PDG Bruce Lakin takes over as our District Rotary Foundation Chair. I thank our District 9685 Foundation committee for their great work around the clubs and in their specialty areas, and I know Bruce will receive the same level of support and assistance from his team.
