Instruction ManualPedemin-2
1. Description
1.1 Working principle
Pedemin-2 is a specimen mover for the preparation ofmetallographic and mineralogical specimens.
Pedemin-2 is designed for mounting on a polishing machine with a200 mm polishing disc (Petrodisc-M: 175 mm), usually StruersDAP- V or DAP- 7. Pedemin-2 has a specimen holder plate, in which1, 2, or 3 specimens can be inserted without clamping.
Load is applied to the individual specimens by adjustablespringloads. The specimen holder is positioned eccentrically overthe polishing disc, rotating in the same direction as the disc, atapproximately 110 rpm.
For grinding with Pedemin-2, Petrodisc-M with Struers diamondspray is used. Polishing is performed on polishing cloths with
l Struers diamond spray or with diamond paste (DP-Spray, DiamondPaste - High Quality, Diamond Paste - Standard Quality).
1.2 Design
A gear motor drives a shaft (fig. 3.2) on which the specimen holder .,plate is mounted. The specimen holder plate (fig. 3.1) is easilyexchanged (see below) to suit various specimen diameters. Threespring loaded thrust pads (fig. 1.5) apply adjustable load on thespecimens. The pressure is varied by turning the screw (fig. 1.6).The lines on the rotating casing (fig. 1.4) indicates the load.
Pedemin-2 is tilted back for changing of grinding and polishing disc.ir A lubricator (fig. 1.8) provides the necessary supply of lubricant.
The amount of lubricant is adjusted by the needle valve (fig. 1.7).
An on/off switch (fig. 1.2) and a pilot lamp are located on the frontpanel. The pilot lamp will light up when the switch is "on".

I 5. Installation
~ 5.1 Mounting of specimen holder plate. Tilt Pedemin-2 back into its top position. This is done by pushing
the pin to the right (fig. 2.7) with your right hand and then liftingthe handle (fig. 1.3) with your left hand.
'I Mount specimen holder plate on the shaft with the screw (fig. 3.3)
using the screwdriver.
5.2 Mounting on polishing machine
Pedemin-2 is usually mounted on DAP-V or DAP-7, but may also befitted on other polishing machines. In case of other models thisrequires a special column.
D Mount a specimen holder plate on Pedemin-2.
D Place a polishing disc, 200 mm dia. on the DAP-machine.
D Remove the nut and the spacing washers (fig. 4.2) from thePedemin-2 column. Remove the plastic plug from the DAP machine
'if and pass the column through the opening (fig. 1.1). Place theDAP-machine on its left side.
D The column must be held firmly against the bottom plate (fig. 7.1)~ while the distance h in fig. 5 is measured.
D The distance h should be about 2-2.5 mm. If h is too little, lift thecolumn out and fit a suitable number of spacing washers. When his correct, fit the washer and nut (fig. 7.2) and tighten the nut
. slightly.
I Before final tightening of the nut check the distance x (fig. 6). This[ distance should be:
~"'
,,.:. Specimen x =
dia.
40 mm 1,5 mm
1Y2" 2,5 mm
1Y4" 6,0 mm
30 mm 6,5 mm
~ 25 mm 9,0 mm
! After determining the distance x tighten the nut firmly. The columnnow remains in this position.
~ ~.., .1 7
l /if Struers

Instruction ManualPedemin-2
Then another nut is screwed on to ensure that the column remainsin the correct position.
Mount the lubricator (fig. 1.8) on the pin and pour blue or redlubricant in the plastic bottle.
5.3 Connection to power
Check that the voltage and frequency on the identification plate onthe rear side of Pedemin-2 corresponds with the local voltage.
If desired, Pedemin-2 may receive power separately from a wallsocket. For this purpose the cable has to be fitted with a suitableplug with earth connection. Yellow/green lead is earthed.
If you want Pedemin-2 to be powered and started by theDAP-machine, mount the cable with hose piece and clamp in the
i rear side of the DAP-machine. DAP- V and DAP- 7 machines areprepared for this (fig. 8.1).
When connecting Pedemin-2 to the models DAP-7 and DAP-V, theleads from Pedemin-2 is connected in the following way:
DAP.7/125 rpm D Brown to terminal 3 (or 7) of the speed-change selector.D Blue to terminal 10 (or 8) of the speed-change selector.
~ r-- D Yellow/green to yellow/green lead.
DAP-7/250 rpm D Brown to terminal 1 of the speed-change selector.D Blue to terminal 6 of the speed-change selector.D Yellow/green to yellow/green lead.

6. Operation
6.1 Insertion of specimen - Adjustment of load
The specimen must fit into the hole in the specimen holder platewithin about 1 mm. Insert the specimen by raising the thrust pad
f. .. (fig. 11.1); if the specimen is too high to pass under the foot, adjustY,c':¥i'~ the screw (fig. 11.2). The recommended specimen height is~!1~ !['f~.~-~ 15-20 mm.,;:;~&"-hn'a:4
r_;-;:toa_,:-;[~' After inserting the specimen in the specimen holder plate, adjust, -,~ the pressure. The pressure is indicated by the position of the small~ ,~::';!".~-c~ screw (fig. 13.1) and adjusted by turning the screw (fig. 13.2). With
the screw (fig. 13.1) in its lowest position under the lowest marker~\;,j ,':;.; i-J.ui:;; line (fig. 13.3) the load is about 3 N.

Marker Loadline
1 5 N
2 15 N
3 25 N
4 35 N
5 45-50 N
The small screw (fig. 13.1) must not be raised above the 5th markerline.
X NB: Pedemin-2 should always be started after the polishingmachine has been started (or by the DAP).
Pedemin-2 is designed for rotating 1, 2, or 3 specimens~ simultaneously on a rotating polishing disc. Pedemin-2 must not
rotate on a stationary polishing disc.
When preparing 3 specimens at the same time make sure that theX load per specimen does not exceed 25 N. Bigger loads may cause
jamming of the polishing disc.

~il, ''J. - 6.3 Polishing
Place a polishing disc 200 mm dia. with polishing cloth on themachine. Use the same procedure as described above in section 6.2. E
Use Struers diamond spray or Struers diamond paste on Struerspolishing cloths. The pressure on the individual specimen will varyaccording to the size and material of the specimen.
6.4 Hints
The tables stated below indicates the preparation procedure for awide range of materials. If a given material is not included in thetable, it will often be possible to find a similar material, which maythen serve as a model.
In principle, all metallic, ceramic and mineralogical materials canbe prepared by means ofPedemin-2, mounted on DAP-V or DAP-7.If in doubt, please contact your local Struers representative orStruers directly.
NB: All preparation examples shown below are with Pedemin-2 ona DAP-machine.
Force on each sample is stated in figures 1 to 5. 1 is 1st markingline (approximately 5N), 2 is 2nd marking line (approximately 15N)etc., see section 6.1.
