working around the clock fine tun-ing five EA-6B’s that the aircrew will fly.

Next, the aircrew will have to hone and perfect their tactics in order to take full advantage of the ICAP III’s advanced capabilities. ICAP III is the latest of five genera-tions of EA-6 airborne electronic-attack systems designed to identify, degrade and destroy enemy radar-guided air defense and communica-tion systems.

In order to demonstrate the squadron’s combat readiness, the Cougars will have to participate in numerous long-range strikes to NAS China Lake, Calif., and NAS Fallon, Nev., as well as a number of surface search, counter-targeting,

suppression of enemy air defense and combat search and rescue mis-sions. These missions will amount to an incredible learning experi-ence for their upcoming deploy-ment, and will strengthen the cohe-sion between the air wing, the USS Ronald Reagan and Strike Group Seven.

“I can’t wait to head to the boat,” said newly-acquired nugget Lt. Clay Greunke. “Not only is this my first time landing on the Reagan, but also working with the air wing. This should be the coolest thing ever.”

The clock is ticking as the Prowler and its reign as the venerable work-horse of the electronic attack com-munity comes to a close. The last prowler deployment for VAQ-139 is on the horizon, but no matter the platform, the Cougars will continue their dominance in using airborne electronic attack defending the United States and our allies.

Prowler until the transition to the Boeing EA-18G is complete in 2015.”

“The wing currently has 10 fleet EA-6B squadrons, three fleet EA-18G squad-rons and our fleet replace-ment squadron, VAQ-129, that trains Navy and Marine Corps aviators in both plat-forms. VAQ-135 begins transition training Nov. 1. The Black Ravens will be assigned five EA-18Gs and become the Navy’s fourth operational Growler squad-ron,” concluded Slais.

In the electronic warfare environment, the EA-6B Prowler is a unique “jam-

mer” aircraft that deploys from both land bases and aircraft carriers to monitor the electromagnetic spec-trum and actively deny an adversary the use of radar and communications. The crew includes one pilot and three NFOs, electronic countermeasures officers called “ECMOs”.

The EA-18G current-ly being delivered to the Navy is derived from the F/A-18F Super Hornet air-craft. The Growler incor-porates advanced avionics for suppression of enemy air defenses and non-tra-ditional electronic attack operations. The crew con-sists of one pilot and one backseat NFO called an “EWO” (electronic warfare officer).
