Reading
Supporting assemblies and personal development this

Accelerated Reader (AR) in their own wordshellip
When our Year 7s filled in a survey recently about their experience
of AR (which we use as a tool to motivate all levels of readers) we
received some overwhelmingly positive responses Here are just a
few of many
It challenges my brain to remember what I have read and itrsquos a
good re cap
It makes me happy that I can read the books I like in my ZPD range
and I have improved in my range as well
It lets me test my knowledge and it helps me remember stuff
It makes me feel good about all the books I read and I can see my
progress
It is pushing my reading skills and it has improved my reading
I wouldnt say I like it but itrsquos a good way to test your knowledge
on a book you read
It encourages me to read my school book at home
I like the football books and the ones that have some pictures in
With every score I get it boosts my reading confidence and it
challenges me to read more harder books
In addition the focus on drug awareness in
assemblies lately is supported in the library by these
informative non-fiction books for young people

Reading something special
A lsquomodern classicrsquo
The author Norton Juster died recently just after
celebrating his 91st
birthday and his most famous book
is about to celebrate its 60th birthday The Phantom
Tollbooth had been in print continually since 1961
Itrsquos the story of Milo ndash an American boy 10 years old and
very bored He is puzzled when a strange parcel arrives
in his bedroom It contains a model tollbooth through
which he can drive his toy car So he does ndash onto roads
that lead into the Lands Beyond peopled with curious
creatures kind or menacing Along the lines of Alice in
Wonderland The Chronicles of Narnia and The Wizard of
Oz this is a brilliant book to read aloud with strange
new worlds and unfamiliar words He seems to be away
for days ndash but it ends up just to be one hour in real time
This book is for all ages and can be understood on many
levels by children and their parents

Supporting assemblies and personal development this

comprehensive explanations and historical context

Reading
Supporting assemblies and personal development this
term which focus on understanding democracy in our
country the following series of library books gives
comprehensive explanations and historical context

It challenges my brain to remember what I have read and itrsquos a

It makes me happy that I can read the books I like in my ZPD range
