MS Upcoming Events:
Dear Parents,
The expression “me ies when you’re having fun” is certainly applicable to life in MS. The
semester is ying by and there are a myriad of acvies taking place which are making the
MS a hive of acvity. As we visit classrooms and sit in on lessons we have been impressed
by the engaging learning experiences that teachers are providing as well as the levels of
commitment and movaon being displayed by students. Classrooms are lled with in-
sighul conversaons that show reecon, understanding and enjoyment.
The overall MS climate is strong and students have demonstrated high levels of school spirit
during the IASAS inter-school compeon as well during the rst MS house event! It is won-
derful to see our school coming together and modelling ISM’s core values - Integrity, Service,
Merit.
Below are some key events and important updates that will help you keep abreast of all that
is happening in the MS over the coming week.
Middle School MAP Tesng:
MAP tesng has been taking place this week and connues through unl Tuesday of next
week. Most students have now nished the Reading and Math tests and will take the Lan-
guage Usage test next week. As the MAP tests are unmed some students need addional
me in order to complete the tests. Students are being asked to nish the tests during tuto-
rial sessions on Tuesday and Thursday or during their lunch mes. In cases where students
need a signicantly longer period of me, students may be invited to come back aer schoolor come in early on Wednesday October 21st late start. Students who have been o school
and have missed a MAP test will be allowed to take any missing tests next week. If you want
to help prepare your son/daughter for the MAP tests, please make sure your child is not
overly stressed, has between 9 - 11 hours of sleep each night and eats a healthy breakfast.
GO Bearcats! IASAS - Updates Pending
As many of you are aware, the IASAS inter-school compeons are coming to a close and we
are all waing to hear the result of the nals which take place on Saturday. Keep your n-
gers crossed for the Bearcats!

helped make the vising team members’ experience so memorable.

We are unable to provide supervision as all teachers and TAs will be in conferences. We respecully request that parents make the neces-
sary arrangements to have their child picked up from school in a mely fashion.
In order to help parents prepare eecvely for the Parent Teacher Conferences, you can nd
some ps that we have adapted from the Harvard Family Research Project.
Parent–Teacher Conferences: A Tip Sheet for Parents:
As a parent, you are your child’s rst and most important teacher. You and your child’s school
have something in common: You both want your child to learn and do well. When parents and
teachers talk to each other, each person can share important informaon about your child’s tal-
ents and needs. Each person can also learn something new about how to help your child. Parent–
teacher conferences are a great way to start talking to your child’s teachers. This p sheet sug-
gests ways that you can make the most of parent-teacher conferences so that everyone wins,
especially your child.
What should you expect?
A two-way conversaon. Like all good conversaons, parent–teacher conferences are best
when both people talk and listen. The conference is a me for you to learn about your child’s
progress in school: Find out whether your child is meeng school expectaons and academic
standards and discuss your child and their individual learning journey. This is also a me forthe teacher to learn about what your child is like at home. When you tell the teacher about
your child’s skills, interests, needs, and dreams, the teacher can help your child more.
Emphasis on learning. Good parent–teacher conferences focus on how well the child is doing
in school from the academic, personal, social, emoonal and physical perspecves. They also
talk about how the child can connue to grow and develop. To get ready for the conversa-
on, look at your child’s homework and PowerSchool data before the conference. Be sure to
think of any quesons that you would like to ask the teacher.
Opportunies and challenges. Just like you, teachers want your child to succeed. You will
probably hear posive feedback about your child’s progress as well as areas for improve-
ment. Be prepared by thinking about your child’s strengths and challenges beforehand. Be
ready to ask quesons about ways you and the teacher can help your child with some of his
or her challenges.
What should you talk to the teacher about?
Progress. Find out how your child is doing by asking quesons like: Is my child performing at
grade level? What do you see as his or her strengths? How could he or she improve? How is
my child in regards to his or her social interacons and ability to collaborate eecvely? How
does my child cope when presented with a challenging task - do they persevere or do they
give up?
Your thoughts about your child. Be sure to share your thoughts and feelings about your child.
Tell the teacher what you think your child is good at. Explain what he or she needs more help
with.
Support learning at home. Ask what you can do at home to help your child learn.
Make a plan. Write down the things that you and the teacher will each do to support your child. Write down what you will do, when,
and how oen. Make plans to check in with the teacher in the coming months.
Maintain Strong Communicaon. Communicaon should go both ways. Verify the most eecve way to contact the teacher. And
don’t forget to share the most eecve ways for how the teacher can contact you too!
Talk to your child. The parent–teacher conference is all about your child, so don’t forget to include him or her. Share with your child
what you learned. Show him or her how you will help and remember to frame the conversaon through the lens of connued growth
and support.
We hope that parents nd these ps useful and that they help prime your thinking ready for the conferences.
