  • SAINT HELEN’S PARISH

26th SUNDAY of the YEAR THE YEAR OF THE WORD – THE GOD WHO SPEAKS

THE SEASON OF CREATION World Day for Refugees and Migrants

    27th September 2020

    ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

THE WORD THIS WEEK The choice is always ours. Ezekiel warns that the good person can lose it, but in contrast, no one is

stuck in sin. Jesus tells it as a story, two brothers and how they respond to the father’s call (a parable

that Saint Luke will fill out and change into a story of the ‘prodigally forgiving father’). The choice

is ours. Reciting a beautiful early-Christian hymn, Saint Paul tells us we must be ‘in our minds, the

same as Christ Jesus’, the Son who readily completes his Father’s will. ‘Lord, make me know your

    ways, teach me your paths.’

    SUNDAY MASS: (Psalter: Week 2)

Gathering Antiphon (6.30pm): All that you have done to us, O Lord, you have done with true judgement,

for we have sinned against you and not obeyed your commandments.

But give glory to your name and deal with us according to the bounty of your mercy.

Ezekiel 18: 25 – 28. When the sinner renounces sin, he shall certainly live.

Response: Psalm 24. R/. The Lord is close to all who call him.

Philippians 2: 1 – 11. In your minds you must be the same as Christ Jesus.

    Acclamation for the Gospel:

Alleluia, Alleluia! If anyone loves me they will keep my word and my Father will love them, and we shall come to them, Alleluia, Alleluia. Alleluia!

Matthew 21: 28 – 32. "Tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you."

Preface and Eucharistic Prayer: Preface of Sundays iv; Eucharistic prayer ii.

    Communion Antiphon (6.30pm): By this we come to know the love of God, that Christ laid down his life for us;

so we ought to lay down our lives for one another.

AND NOW THE GOOD NEWS WE’RE BACK!

A second look means that after all we don’t need to stop public Mass.

So we are open for Sunday Mass at 6.30pm on Saturdays and 10.30am on Sundays,

and weekdays at 10am on Tuesdays and Fridays, and adoration 2-4pm on Wednesdays.

  • Today is the WORLD DAY FOR REFUGEES AND MIGRANTS Pope Francis has much to say on this. He reminds us that an encounter with displaced people, as it is with any marginalised people, is an opportunity for an encounter with God. He says ‘The pandemic has reminded us how we are all in the same boat.’ Realising that we have the same concerns and fears has shown us once more that no one can be saved alone. To grow truly, we must grow together, sharing what we have, like the boy who offered Jesus five barley loaves and two fish… yet they proved enough for five thousand people (Jn 6:1-15) Of the world’s eighty million displaced people, only a tiny fraction seek sanctuary in the UK. The vast majority are accommodated by the world’s poorest

countries and many of our European neighbours play a much bigger role than us. Extending opportunities for resettlement and family reunification causes championed by so many of our churches, including several in our own Diocese, is surely now a more urgent moral duty than at any time in our recent history. To see the pope’s message for this day, and much more on the issue, please go to:

Thursday, the feast of Saint Therese of Lisieux, ‘the Little Flower’, is also the start of October, the

MONTH OF THE ROSARY. Every weekday morning the rosary will be said in church at 9.45am. On Thursday 1st, to set us off, it will be live-streamed. Join us there, or join us in person on

Tuesday and Friday mornings before Mass, or join us each weekday at 9.45 saying the rosary with us

    wherever you are.

‘ “I will bring them out from the peoples, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land, and I will feed them upon the heights of Israel”. God has set up the authors of the divine scriptures as the heights of Israel. Feed there to feed safely. Whatever you har from that source, savour it well. Whatever is outside, reject. Lest you should go astray in the mist, listen to the shepherd’s voice. Gather together on the mountain of Holy Scripture. There are your heart’s delights; there is nothing poisonous there, nothing you should not eat, its pastures are of the richest.’ From a sermon of Saint Augustine.

Don’t forget the Thursday evening SCRIPTURE STUDY! Come and share the feast!

THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH Part One: THE PROFESSION OF FAITH. Section One: ‘I Believe’ – ‘We Believe’

Chapter 3: Man’s Response to God

    (142) By his Revelation, “the invisible God, from the fullness of his love, addresses men as

his friends, and moves among them, in order to invite and receive them into his own

    company”(DV 2; cf. ⇒ Col 1:15; ⇒ I Tim 1:17; ⇒ Ex 33:11; ⇒ Jn 15:14-15; Bar 3:38 (Vulg.)). The adequate

response to this invitation is faith.

    (143) By faith, man completely submits his intellect and his will to God(Cf. DV 5). With his

whole being man gives his assent to God the revealer. Sacred Scripture calls this human

response to God, the author of revelation, "the obedience of faith" (Cf. ⇒ Rom 1:5; ⇒ 16:26). (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1992)
