“Our mission is to offer every person in our community a
life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ”
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph | La Sagrada Familia de Jesús, María y José 2

“Charity Begins At Home!” Today we turn our attention to family life. Mother Church presents the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as a model of family relationships. This year, the facilitator of our Advent parish mission, Fr. Augustine Ebido, OP, focused on the topic of “relationships”. Using studies and the Scriptures, he showed that “our life is all about relationships.” Studies and the Bible prove that 1) our happiness and wellbeing depend on the quality of our relationships and 2) in general, our relationships with people mirror our relationship with God. To determine what makes people happy, Harvard University conducted a 75-year study of selected people. They tracked the lives of about 700 people from their adolescence to old age. The study found that it wasn’t money or fame or hard work that made people happy but the quality of their relationships. Robert Waldinger, the present director of the study sums it up:
Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Period. …Social connections are really good for us and loneliness kills. It turns out that people who are more socially connected to family, to friends, to community are happier, physically healthier and they live longer than people who are less well connected. It is the quality of your close relationships that matters. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KkKuTCFvzI)
But good and bad relationships don’t just determine the health of our minds and bodies, they determine our relationship with God also. Because of the inherent presence of God in every human being, our relationships with people ultimately mirror our relationship with God. Jesus teaches that whatever is done to the least of his brethren is done to him (Mt 25). Franz Jalics explains it this way:
“If I have a relationship with 100 people, I love 20, Reject 20 and have a ‘normal’ but superficial relationship with 60, I can say that I have 20% love for God, 20% rejection, 60% superficiality or normality. This 60% superficiality means God exists at such a distance that he is in practical terms absent.”
Families that live in love, live in God. For “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them” (1 Jn 4:16). Charity begins at home because it is where we learn to love or hate. If we invite God into our homes, then our homes become places of love. So how is your own family doing? Is it a place of love, peace, forgiveness and unity? Is there harmony or disharmony in your family? Is God prominent in your family? I ask you to take a lead on this one. Intentionally decide today to bring God and love into your own family. “Be the change you want to see” in your family.

What a crazy month it has been! From retreat, to the parish mission, to candlelight and all the day to day activities it has been a crazy whirlwind of a month! At one point this month I felt like the Casey Jr train from dumbo say “ I think I can, I think I can” as the month went on and there seemed to be no end in sight! But when it’s all said all I can do is look back and thank God for everything. It is so easy to get swept up in the holidays and not thank God but this is the time to look back and take a moment to thank God for all of the blessings in our life as another year comes to an end and we prepare to start a new! May God bless you all in this new year and as always I ask that you continue to pray for the teens in our ministry and we will pray for you.
YOUTH MINISTRY MINISTERIO JUVENIL [email protected]

DID YOU KNOW?
Everyone is in charge of their own bodies It is important to allow children to decline signs of physical affection if they are uncomfortable or don’t want to receive them. It’s also equally important to teach children that this rule works both ways — if someone does not want a hug or a kiss, that decision should be respected. For young children who
may be grabby or touchy-feely, this can be a tough lesson to instill, but it sets the groundwork for a critical understanding of the word “no” and how to react to it. Remind children about their own boundaries, and the boundaries of others, and reinforce ways to express love and friendship while respecting those boundaries. For more information, https://www.parents.com/parenting/better-parenting/advice/reluctant-hugs-why-you-shouldnt-force-kids-to-show-physical/ SABÍA USTED?
