Hagerstown man to be sentenced next month in tax-evasion case
HARRISBURG, Pa. — When the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania issued a warning Thursday about tax fraud, it included a list of people charged and/or sentenced with the crime in the past year.
Among them was Atef Hussein, 48, of Hagerstown, who pleaded guilty Oct. 30, 2017, to income-tax evasion, according to a news release from the attorney’s office.
Hussein, former owner/operator of the Fairground Diner in Carlisle, Pa., was
accused of understating income and taxes due, re-sulting in false income-tax returns for tax years 2012 to 2015, attorneys said.
The tax loss for that pe-riod totaled $122,003, the re-lease said.
Hussein is scheduled to
be sentenced May 30.“As the 2018 tax season
draws to a close, everyone is reminded of their obli-gation to file tax returns that accurately reflect all of their income and expens-es,” IRS Special Agent Guy Ficco said in the release.

Man charged with indecent assault
A Chambersburg, Pa., man is accused of the sexual assault of a fe-male last month in Ham-ilton Township, Pennsyl-vania State Police said.
Tyler M. Williams, 23, is charged with indecent assault, according to a news release from state police.
Troopers said they were told March 8 that a female was sexually as-saulted on Heintzelman Avenue.
Williams was charged Friday after the investi-gation.
Further details were unavailable.
Chainsaw, other items stolen from shed
A chainsaw and other items were stolen from a shed earlier this week in Southampton Township, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The 82-year-old victim told authorities a 14-inch Husqvarna chainsaw and
two 5-gallon gas cans were taken from his shed off Ashton Drive late Tuesday or early Wednes-day, according to a state police news release.
Troopers said the total value of the items was estimated at $220.

Man accused of inappropriate contact
A Chambersburg, Pa., man is accused of having inappropriate contact with a female, according to online court records and a Pennsylvania State Po-lice news release.
Daniel Lee Topper, 66, is charged with inde-cent exposure, indecent assault without consent of the other and harass-ment.
Troopers allege the incident occurred March 24 at a residence in the 1000 block of Warm Spring Road.
Details were not pro-vided.

I-70 bridge over I-81 to have lane closures Sunday night
HALFWAY — There will be single-lane closures overnight Sunday on the westbound Interstate 70 bridge over Interstate 81 in the Halfway area, ac-cording to the Maryland State Highway Adminis-tration.
The traffic adjustment is part of a bridge reha-bilitation project.
The lane closures are expected to start at 9 p.m. Sunday and end at 5 a.m. Monday.
There also will con-tinue to be single-lane closures Sunday nights through Friday morn-ings, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., related to the widening of Interstate 81. Those closures oc-cur on I-81 between the Potomac River bridge and Md.68/Md. 63. There might be occasional, brief total closures be-tween midnight and 4 a.m. to move equipment and materials.
US 40 and I-81 interchange work about improving watershed
The work that has been going on in the grassy ar-eas along the U.S. 40 and Interstate 81 interchange is part of a statewide project aimed at reducing nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment runoff to help the Chesa-peake Bay watershed.
The project includes four bioswales, seven sub-merged gravel wetlands and two grass swales, ac-cording to an email from Maryland State Highway
Administration spokesman Charlie Gischlar.
A bioswale is a filtra-tion system with multiple layers, usually including sand, soil and organic matter such as mulch or compost, according to the agency’s impervious resto-ration plan. As stormwater makes its ways through the layers, sediment, ni-trogen and phosphorous is removed.
Drivers could experience shoulder and partial ramp closures.
The project was expect-
ed to be finished in July but might be pushed back a bit due to inclement weather in March, Gischlar wrote.
The work is part of a larger effort for the State Highway Administration to meet 2020 goals for im-pervious runoff reduction to reduce pollutants and improve water quality for the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed, according to the state agency’s website. The nearby Potomac River is a major tributary of the bay.
