ArcGIS for Desktop Installation
1. ArcGIS Desktop must be installed on computers running one of the following Windows
Operating Systems

3. Hardware requirements
Supported and Recommended
CPU Speed 2.2 GHz minimum ; Hyper-threading (HHT) or Multi-core recommended
Platform x86 or x64 with SSE2 extensions
Memory/RAM 2 GB minimum
Display properties 24-bit color depth
Screen resolution 1024 x 768 recommended minimum at normal size (96 dpi)
Swap space Determined by the operating system; 500 MB minimum.
Disk space
2.4 GB . In addition, up to 50 MB of disk space may be needed in the Windows System directory (typically,
C:\Windows\System32). You can view the disk space requirement for each of the 10.3 components in the Setup
program. If using ArcGlobe, additional disk space may be required. ArcGlobe will create cache files when used.
Video/Graphics adaptor
64 MB RAM minimum, 256 MB RAM or higher recommended. NVIDIA, ATI, and Intel chipsets supported. 24-bit
capable graphics accelerator. OpenGL version 2.0 runtime minimum is required, and Shader Model 3.0 or higher
is recommended. Be sure to use the latest available driver.
Networking Hardware Simple TCP/IP, Network Card, or Microsoft Loopback Adapter is required for the license manager.
4. Software requirements
• .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS for Desktop.
• Internet Explorer must be installed prior to installing ArcGIS for Desktop
• Python requirement for Geoprocessing. ArcGIS for Desktop geoprocessing tools require
that Python 2.7.x and Numerical Python 1.7.x are installed. The Python installation
location should not include spaces.

5. Step by Step guide for ArcGIS Desktop Installation on Windows 10
1) Download ArcGIS for Desktop (assuming you are using Internet explorer)
You should have a link to the software file in your email. You need to click on
that link.
2) After clicking on that link, you will see a new popup window asking you to run or
save the software file. You must click on “Save” button.
3) You’ll see it starts downloading as shown below:
It may take a while for the download to finish depending on the speed of your
internet connection.
4) When it finishes, you’ll see something like this:

5) You can click on “Open folder” button, to go to the folder containing the file as
shown below
This is a zipped file, so you will need to double click on the file to extract it.
6) After double clicking on it, you should see something similar to the following
screenshot. Make sure to write down this file path so you can find it later. You
can now click on the “Next” button.

7) The install wizard will extract the software and put it in the directory selected in
the previous step.

8) You should see a screen similar to the follow screenshot when it’s done. Please
make sure you enable the “Launch” checkbox to begin the setup process, and
then click on the “Close” button to begin installing the software.
**If you clicked on “Close” without checking the “Launch” box, you can run the
setup program by clicking on setup.exe file in the directory that you wrote down
in the previous step.
9) You may see a pop-up window asking for your permission to install the software.
Please click on “Yes” to proceed.

10) If you haven’t already installed the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 sp1, the
following window will appear:
This message indicates .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 is missing on your computer. You should click
on the link (NET Framework 3.5 SP1) in the email to download install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1,
or you can copy and paste the following address in to your internet browser:
http://esrik-12gis.emich.edu/k12/downloads/ArcGIS_Desktop/dotnetfx35setup.exe
After downloading the .NET Framework software, you should double-click the
Framework 3.5 file to install it.

11) If Framework 3.5 sp1 already exists on your machine, you should see the
following ArcGIS 10.3.1 for desktop setup window. Click “Next>”.
12) Accept the license agreements to proceed. Then click the “Next>” button.

13) Choose the “Complete” option and click on the “Next>” button.
14) Click the “Change” button to choose a folder for installation. If it suits you, use
the default destination folder and click on “Next>” button

15) The setup program will inform you that it needs to install Python on your
machine and show the destination folder for installation. You can accept the
default folder and click on “Next>” button.
16) The “Ready to install the program” page will be shown to you. Click the “Install>”
button to start the installation process. You can also click on the “<Back” button
if you want to change any of the settings you have already configured.

17) The setup program will start to update your system and install ArcGIS for
Desktop. Note that it takes some time for the program to finish installation.
Please wait for the setup program to complete.

18) After completion, you will see a screen similar to the one below.
Click on “Finish>” button to proceed.
19) The ArcGIS administrator wizard window will automatically open shortly after
the installation is complete.
• In the section labeled with “1. Select a product”, you should choose the
“Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use” and keep it selected.
• In the section labeled with “Launch the Authorization Wizard for Single
Use products”, you should click on “Authorize Now>” button.

20) After clicking the “Authorization Now” button, the Authorization Options
window will appear. *You should have received a provisioning file in your email
as an attachment. You need to save that attached provisioning file on the
machine that you are installing ArcGIS Desktop on before going to the next step.
Remember where you choose to save this file as you will need to locate it in the
upcoming step.
Among the Authorization Options, you need to choose the last option
labeled with “I have received an authorization file from Esri and am now ready
to finish the authorization process”

Click on “Browse>” button to browse to the provisioning file you downloaded
from your email (click this file and make it highlight), and then click on “Open>”
on that window
On the “Authorization Wizard” windows, you can click on the “Next>” button.
21) Select “Authorize with ESRI now over the Internet”.
Then click on “Next>” button to start authorizing ArcGIS Desktop.

22) You must input your personal information. If the program automatically
populated some information in the boxes, you need to check each of them to
make sure it is the correct information.
Click on the “Next>” button once you have populated the fields.
23) On the next panel, you need to fill your organization, industry and status of
yourself. Use the example seen below as a guideline, then click on “Next>”.

24) You should see the authorization numbers have populated automatically.
If you don’t see these numbers, you should contact Rolland <[email protected]>.
You don’t need to change anything on this form, so go ahead and can click on
“Next>”.

25) Select “I have authorization number(s) to authorize one or more extensions”.
Click “Next>”.

26) You don’t need to do anything on “Evaluate Software Extensions”,
so you can click on “Next>”.

You need to have internet connection in order to complete authorization! Please make sure
you connected to the internet before clicking on the “Next>” button.
27) At this point, you will see the authorization of the software. It may take a few
minutes depending on the speed of your internet connection.

After completing authorization, you should see a screen similar to the one below.
You can click on “Finish>”.

28) Now, the installation is complete
Notes:
If you missed the authorization step, you can also authorize ArcGIS using the
ArcGIS Administrator program. Assuming you are using Windows 10, you can find the
program by following the steps below:
a. From main menu >-all app >-ArcGIS.
b. Double-click “ArcGIS Administrator”

c. The ArcGIS Administrator app will be open
d. You should see the following window.

e. Click “Desktop” folder from the left panel
f. Make the checkbox checked on “Advanced (ArcInfo) Single Use.
g. From the bottom of the window, click on “Authorize Now” button
h. You can follow the wizard to complete authorization.
