Stay On Target with the Flexibilityof the Octal C40 Board
When it comes to DSP boards, none can match the optionsand configurability of PenteksModel 4285 Octal C40 VME.You specify the number ofprocessors, the memory cap-acityeven the I/O facilities. There are so many options, its
like getting a custom boardright off-the-shelf.Your budgets will stay right
on target because you onlypay for the memory and pro-cessing power your applica-
tion requires. Load up yourboard with 64 MB of DRAM,27 MB of SRAM. Put up to2.2 GOPS and 400 MFLOPSof processing power at yourfingertips...and let it fly with avariety of I/O optionsinclud-ing RACEway, VME64,
VSBbus, VME Master, MIX andPMC mezzanine busses andeight front panel comm ports.Youll be ready for futuregrowth, too, because the 4285allows you to retool your
board configuration for differ-ent applications.
Plus, youll hit the groundrunning with an unrivaledarray of software tools, includ-ing FTL, SwiftTools, andSwiftNet communications soft-ware, high-level languages,
compilers, debuggers, DSPlibraries and dozens more.We also offer expert appli-
cations support and one yearof free software upgrades.

No other vendor in the industryapproaches the assembly ofmemory like Pentek has withits 4285 board. The uniquedesign of what Pentek coinedas memory wafers is a newstandard for memory attributionthat is well on its way forpatenting.
The memory wafers areactually miniature encapsulatedcircuit assemblies fabricatedutilizing the latest in chip-on-board packaging technology. These stackable wafers containvarious sizes of local andglobal memory resources for
each processor. Each processoron the board can be equippedwith the customer-specifiedmemory size that is appropriatefor their application.
This is a tremendous costsavings because you only orderthe appropriate amount ofmemory that is needed at thattime, eliminating any waste. And, this new wafer design canbe easily replaced or upgradedfor future applications, so thisboard can grow with you asapplications and systemdemands change.

Moving data in and out of yourDSPboard is one of the mostimportant systems tasks. Youneed the most efficient and effec-tive I/O interfaces to achieve theappropriate sampling rates andfrequencies. Finding the right I/Oboard will help reduce yourdevelopment time as well as opti-mize your systems performance.
Pentek gives you the widestselection of premier data acquisi-tion products. Chances are weprobably have the I/O board you
thought youd have to build your-self. Pentek offers over 50board-level solutions. This is, byfar, the largest offering of dataacquisition products specificallydeveloped for DSPsystem solu-tions.
Our wide range of data acquisi-tion offerings can meet the demandsof virtually every type of applica-tion. Our boards run the charts, from single channel to 32-channelboards with 18-bit accuracy andsampling rates up to 70 MHz!
The 4285 board makes use ofthe most popular interfaces withthe highest data transfer rates. The board is equipped with C40Communication Ports, VME inter-faces like VME64, VSB andRACEway along with mezzaninearchitectures like MIX and PMC(PCI Mezzanine Card).

The 4285 MIX Adapter providestwo access methods to the MIXmodule from the C40s.
In the first method, the MIX busis memory mapped into the 4285Main Bus address space. Since the4285 Main Bus is mastered by alleight C40s, these devices are allcapable of reading or writing toany of the three MIX modules.
The second even faster accessmethod is through the global I/Obusses of C40 processors A, B, E
and F. Each of these C40s canmaster the MIX bus for data trans-fers to and from any module withdata rates up to 25 MB/sec. Thebenefit of using these global busI/O paths is that the connection is

WINLAB, supported by a grant fromthe NSF, has pioneered an approachwhose effectiveness grows as DSPpower increases. The Soft Radiothey are developing envisions thedesign of a universal transmitter/receiver built around a programma-ble DSPwhich would enable thispiece of hardware to function in
different ways: AM-FM radioreceiver, cordless phone to functionanywhere in the worldjust toname a fewsimply by changingthe software.
SystemRequirements: Study and optimize reception in
cellular telephones Maximize the number of userssharing the same bandwidthswithout compromising speechquality
Useasmuch DSPpower as
SystemSolution:WINLAB came to Pentek for most ofthe equipment needed to implementthe system, shown below. TheFPGA board handles sample-levelprocessing tasks which have samplerates up to 1.25 MHz, while theDSPprocessor handles information-
rate tasks, such as speechprocessingall in real-time. Besidesaction as the system controller, theSUN also generates the input signal.
The signal is sent to one of theC40s which acts as the signal con-troller. The signal is then sent to theFPGA board for sample processingand finally sent back to the otherC40s for processing. All signalexchanges are routed through the6472 high-speed A/D converter,4272 digital receiver and the 4241parallel I/O board.
Before the hardware was puttogether, it was simulated with theSignal Processing WorkSystemfrom the Alta Group of CadenceDesign Systems. Pentek suppliedthe drivers.
WINLAB Takes Steps Towards the Soft Radio
We elected to go with
Pentek, because only
they could provide every-
thing we needed for the
present system, including
the SPWdrivers. We
were also happy to seethat they could supply
what we had envisioned
for future expansion.
