mLearning BYO iPad Program BackgroundSomeparentsaskabouttheevidenceonwhichwearebasingour‘bringyourown’deviceprograms.Researchintotechnologyinclassroomshasbeenconductedoverthelast30yearswiththemostinfluentialanddefinitiveresearchbeingdonebyDrReubenPuentedura.Hisresearchhasshownthatusingtechnologytosupportinstructioninaplannedway(acrossK-12)ratherthanjusthavingchildrenplaylearninggameshasasignificantlyhighereffectonstudentoutcomesthanintroducingtechnologyinlaterschoolingyears.IPadshavebeentrialledinclassroomsaroundAustraliasince2011.ThereisaplethoraofinformationontheInternetaboutthesetrialsandtheirsuccessinincreasingstudentengagement,responsibilityandarangeoflearningoutcomes.Thesetrialsweresosuccessfulthatin2012theDepartmentofEducationinQueenslandprovidedeveryschoolwith10iPadstobeusedwithstudentswithdisabilitiesandlearningdifficulties.OfparticularusetoourschoolistheresearchundertakenbyourownDepartmentandalsothatofVictoriawhereone-to-oneprogramshavebeenimplementedwidelyformanyyears.Thefollowingwebsitesprovidesomereadingonthis,shouldyoubeinterested.• http://education.qld.gov.au/smartclassrooms/documents/enterprise-platform/pdf/ipad-trial.pdf• http://www.ipadsforeducation.vic.edu.au/pubs/ipads-for-learning/2017-ipad-trial• http://cheltenhamps.vic.edu.au/wp-

content/uploads/sites/13/2014/11/iPads_for_learning_In_your_hands_trial_evaluation_report.pdfOurRegionalTechnologyManager(whoisemployedbytheDepartmenttoworkwithschoolstodeveloptheseprograms)alsohasprovidedanumberofresourcestoourSchoolCouncil.TheseareavailableonrequestManyofourteachershavepursuedtheirownfurtherlearningandprofessionaldevelopmentintheuseofdigitaltechnologiesforlearning.OurapproachtotheuseofiPadsandlaptopsinclassroomsistomovestudentsbeyondbeingcontentconsumerstoconstructingtheirownunderstandingsandmovingtoalevelofcontentcreation.Mostresearchpointstothegreatlyincreasedlevelinstudentengagementwhichincludedmorecommunicationbetweenteacherandstudent,developmentofresponsibility,compactedlearningasstudentsmovemorequicklythroughstepsinthecurriculumattheirownpace,andanincreasedqualityintheworkstudentsproduce.Theresearchalsotellsuswhenmobileinitiativesfail,itisduetorelyingontheuseofpre-loadedsoftwarethatmerelyreplacesanexistingactivityintheclassroomandwhengamesforrotelearningofdiscretefactsareused.Theuseofmobiledevicesinclassroomsrequirespedagogicalchangewhereteachersactuallyaltertheirinstructionalpractices.Ourteachershaveandcontinuetobesupportedwithprofessionaldevelopmentandcoachingintheuseofmobiledevicesforlearning.Theirworkisoftenonshowforvisitingeducatorsandmanyofthemregularlyareaskedtoprovideprofessionaldevelopmenttocolleaguesinotherschools.HistoryofBringYourOwn(BYO)DevicesatPeregianSpringsStateSchoolThemLearningBYOProgramhasbeenanon-goingprioritysinceourschool’sinception.Ouraimhasbeentoidentifybestpracticemodelsandtoevaluateifaccesstoapersonally-owneddeviceatschoolandhomehasanimpactonacademicimprovement,engagement,attitudetolearningandonthedevelopmentof21stcenturylearningskills.BYOMacBook(2010–now)DuringTerm32010,weparticipatedinaprojectevaluatingtheadvantagesofastudentpersonalisedlaptopprogram,supportedbyApplewhoprovidedMacBooklaptopsandiPodNanodevicesforstudentsinYears6and7foraperiodoffourweeks.ThistrialinformedtheimplementationofthestudentlaptopprogramatPeregianSpringsStateSchoolwhichcommencedforstudentsinYears5,6and7in2011.ParentswereinvolvedininformationandQ&AsessionswithstaffandlocalApplerepresentatives,tohelpmakeaninformeddecision.

TheBYOMacBookprogramisofferedinallYear5and6classesandisnot-compulsory.Studentswithoutapersonally-ownedMacBookhaveaccesstoabankofsharedschool-ownedMacBooks.Theannualparticipationrateacrossclassesinvolvedinthisprogramsitsataround90%ofstudentshavingaBYOMacBookdailyatschool.BYOiPad(2016–now)ThefirstiPadwasintroducedbyAppleinthemiddleof2010.From2011onwardstheschoolbeganpurchasingiPadsandsettingtheseupinsmallpodsof4whichwereinitiallysharedacrosseachyearlevel.EachsubsequentyearhasseenthepurchaseofmoreiPads,towherewenowhaveatleast4iPadsavailableineachclassroomfromPreptoYear4.Unlikemanyotherschools,wehavetakenourtimetoevaluatethesedevicesandtheiruseaslearning,collaborativeandcreativetools,anditwasnotuntilTerm32015thatwebeganworkingtowardsoffering1:1BYOiPadclasses.In2016weinstitutedourfirstBYOiPadclasses–oneinPrep,twoinYear3andtwoinYear4.In2017,wehavetwoBYOiPadclassesineachofPrep,Year1andYear4.In2018,wewillofferBYOiPadclassesinPrep(2–3classes);Year1(3classes);Year2(3classes);andYear3(inanyclass).BYOiPadwillcommencein2019inallYear4classes.StaffReadinessTeachersandschoolleadershaveattended,participatedinandprovidedmanyprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiessince2010,topreparethemtoworkinthewaysofthe21stCenturyLearner;toembracebothdigitalandnon-digitalwaysofteachingandlearning;andtochoosethebestfitpedagogyandtoolforthetaskandeachindividuallearnerintheirclass.Thishasincludedsignificantprofessionallearningonestablishingone-to-oneenvironmentbestpractice,includingintensivepracticums,on-sitevisitstolocalandinterstateschoolsofferingaone-to-oneprogram,accessinglatestresearcharoundpersonalisedlearningwithmobiledevices(iPads,laptopsetc),attendanceatstate,nationalandinternationalconferencesandmasterclasses.Severalofourteachershavewonawardsand/orspokenatconferencesdemonstratingtheirhighlevelofknowledgeandunderstandingofthepedagogiesrequiredintheareaofICTintegrationintheclassroom.ManyothernewandestablishedschoolsfromacrossQueenslandhavecomeandvisitedourschooltoseeourteachersandstudentsinactionwithiPadsandMacBooks.Asaschoolwerunourownin-houseconferences;buildcross-yearlevelnetworks;providetimeforteacherstovisiteachothers’classrooms;andprovidein-classcoachingandmentoringopportunitiesthroughoureLearningcoachesandotherkeystaff,tosharethevaluableknowledgeamongstourstaff.Wearealsooftenvisitedbyteachersandschoolleadersfromotherschoolswhoarelookingtoimplementorexpandtheirprograms.Ourteachersandstudentsalwaysrelishtheseopportunitiestosharetheirenthusiasmandknowledge,andusetheinformationgainedandsharetoreflectonandimprovetheirownclassroompracticeutilizingarangeofICTdevices.AllofourteachersareatadifferentstageintheirjourneyofeffectiveintegrationofICT,andeachwillcontinuetobesupportedtoidentifytheirownlearninggoalsinthisareaandtorefinetheirpractice.WhyAppledevices?Manyparentsaskuswhywedon’tusecheapertabletsorthosewithopen-sourcecode,insteadof‘expensive’Appledevices.ThefocusinourmLearningprogram,asinallprogramsinourschool,isonlearningandteaching.Usingonlyonebrandofdevice(i.e.Apple)allowsustostreamlineourtechnicalsupportandgivesstaffmoreconfidencetotroubleshoottheoccasionalglitch.ItalsoallowsTeacherstoplanandteachallstudentsatonceusingonesetofapps,ratherthanspendingtimeplanningdifferentlessonsforstudentsusingdifferentdevicesanddifferentapps.Theresearchwehavedonesince2010andtheadvicewecontinuetoreceiveisthatforprimaryschoolchildrenitisbesttobespecificandhaveonlyonetypeofcomputerortabletintheclassroom.Thislimitstheamountoftechnicalandsoftwaresupportteacherswouldhavetogivestudentswhoarejuststartingoutwithpersonaldevices.It’sonlywhenstudentsgettothelateryearsofsecondaryschool(e.g.Years10,11and12)andhave

advancedskillswhichenablethemtomanagetheirdeviceswithoutteacherintervention,thataprogramofbringinganydevicetoschoolcanbeimplementedwithoutdisruptinglearning.AllstudentsaccessanduseAppleMaccomputersandiPadsatthisschool.WedonotuseanyWindows-basedcomputersinclassroomsorforstudentuse.Assuch,theschooldoesnotprovideanysupportforWindows-basedcomputersortheirprograms.TeachersuseandprovideinstructioninthesuiteofsoftwarethatcomeswithanAppleMacorAppleiPad.Thekeysoftware(Keynote,Pages,Numbers,iMovie,Garageband)thatcomeswithAppledevicesisusuallyfreeandisuserfriendlyandeasyforanyonetonegotiate.WindowscomputersandothertabletscanbeusedathomebuttheyarenotusedforlearningatPeregianSpringsStateSchool.ThelongevityofAppledevicesisalsoakeyfactorinourcontinueduseofthem.Whilstonthesurfacetheymayappearmoreexpensiveinitially,thefactthattheyusuallyoutlastallothernon-Appledevicesbyanumberofyearsmakesthemmorecost-effectiveinthelongrun.WereceivestrongsupportforourprogramsfromAppleandtheirrelatededucationalandtechnicalservices.AppleandtheirdevelopersarecontinuallyupdatingtheiriOS(operatingsystem)andapps,toensurethatappledevicesarevirtuallyvirusfree.Theseupdatesalsocontinuetointroducenewfeatures.TheupcomingiOS11updatewillforthefirsttimeincludea‘Files’app,whichwillallowuserstobrowse,searchandorganisetheirfilesinoneplace.https://www.apple.com/au/ios/ios-11-preview/ExpansionTimelineFrom2018weplantooffermorestudentsacrossPrep–Year3theopportunitytobringtheirown(BYO)iPadtoschoolforlearningeachday.From2019,wehopetobeabletoofferallstudentsinPrep-Year4classestheopportunitytoBYOiPad.Seetimelinesbelow.
